Was away for a year - did any non-RP reason to fly anything but Cutter get added?

Yeah, but the OP wants to take the "RP" out of a video game where we get to play space pilots. And you're categorically wrong about the Cobra Mk3 - everyone knows the AspX is better.

What are you on man. The AspX sucks. :)

As to the Cobra, it isn't about roleplay reasons. I just find it a nicer ship to fly, more fun. I don't like the bigger ships and see no reason to fly one at the moment. If a proper NPC crew system gets created, then I may think about it as the experience of being in charge of one of these big ships would be very different.

I find the Cutter to actually be one of the worst ships.

It has terrible handling, two huge blind spots smaller ships can virtually park in, can't equip a single Luxury cabin, and while not as noticeable as the Clipper. still manages some odd convergence. But if I'm in the mood to set my fighter to Aggressive, my turrets to "Fire at Will" and want to sit around in a RES site, watching Netflix with a bunch of rubber hoses in my cargo hold while pirates suicide trying to get them.. then the Cutter isn't bad at all. For that. For anything else, I'll take nearly any other ship out there.

I've even done comparative testing - side by side and ton for ton, my Type-9 moves more cargo per hour than my Cutter. Sure Cutter can haul more per trip, but I make the trip faster and easier in the 9, by a factor of 1.84:1.

But there's no getting away from Most Expensive = Best around here.

Just wait until the 1 Billion Credit Viper V hits the shipyards.. same thing as the Viper IV, but with one more small hardpoint, and 1 Class 5 module slot. But it's the most expensive, therefore it is the best.

As I have a Cutter very but rarely use it, I would argue no reason is needed at all.

The only time I look at the Cutter as "the best ship" is when hauling stuff at a CG. For everything else the Cutter is not even in my top-10 go-to list (neither is the Corvette or Anaconda).

The Cutter is one of my favorites. Just don't over shoot the station :D

Doesn't the Cutter still also have superior jump range?

There was a reason: You could pack raw passengers into the Anaconda and make 250m or so per trip to Smeaton. Probably do ok with the Cutter as well, but these sweaty blokes don't need luxury.

Not that I'm shallow or anything, but the interior décor is reminiscent of a sports deodorant can for men. Great potential cargo capacity but it’s the only one of the big 3 that feels painfully sluggish to me after engineering. I bought one recently and I’ve kept it for haulage, but I’m not a fan yet. I prefer to fly the Anaconda and the Corvette. It’s a capable and powerful ship though, no doubt about that.

Variety? You know, it's like eating bad for fun and variety once you get bored of good food. I'd rather stick to best i can have instead. Fun? What's fun about other ships? I mean, conda has nice bridge view, courier has top speed. Anything else and not one trick pony?
That's a matter of opinion. Don't ask for people's opinions if you don't want to actually listen to their answers!!! And maybe don't be so passive aggressive...

I like fighting in the corvette better just because the handling is much easier on me. As far as the type 9 buff, if I remember right it's going to actually be able to just barely haul more than a cutter and for considerably fewer credits to get it, but the cutter will still have more shields and jump range if I remember right.

Honestly, I think every ship has it's upsides and downsides. If the Cutter has hit the sweet spot for you and it's doing everything you want then that's fantastic, feel free to stick with it. You can always try other ships on the side for fun. I actually found the small passenger ship the Dolphin to be a surprisingly fun and classy little all arounder. You already mentioned the Courier for speed. And I hear the Chieftain coming in 3.0 is supposed to be quite nice. I'm sure you can find something interesting out there. :)

Oh, and Welcome Back to the Game! :D

The Cutter doesn't so much 'turn' as 'submit a request for change of course' and wait to see if it's approved.

Other large combat ships can out-smash it (it's the most lightly armed of the 'big three') and medium ships can run circles around it. It can be in this very unsatisfying spot where any other bigship you stand and slug it out with can out-punch but mediums can either cling to blindspots or simply zoom away and leave you behind.

It's possibly the safest ship in the game but it's not always the most effective.

Sell it and get a Cobra Mk III.

Much better vessel. Who needs 700t cargo? I have twenty. And I have more fun trading than anyone.

For many things you might want to do in the game, the Cutter is too big, or too unmaneuverable, or both.

Exploration: Cutter is adequate, but AspX and Anaconda are better; the Dolphin is also proving a popular option. The low maneuverability of a Cutter will likely irritate you on a long voyage. Also, if you go out to Colonia, you won't be able to visit many of the star systems because they only have Outposts.

Combat: Cutter has weak shields and low maneuverability. Lots of people prefer pretty much any other non-trader ship to a Cutter: the Corvette for an unkillable personal battleship, the FdL, FAS, Vulture for heavy fighters, or the iCourier and iEagle for SPEED.

BGS: the Cutter is useless for mission-running, because it can't land at Outposts. BGS min-maxers use a Python.

Huita! The Alliance Chieftain is about to come out. And, especially, after some adjustments in the Beta 3.0, it is fan-tas-tic.

So, fly the Cutter for the big stuff, then the Alliance Chieftain for something quick, moveable and still a hint of Cutter drift ;)

And, of course, both RP and non-RP reasons to fly it!
