New Trailer - and one important question...

Having the Faction representatives, the tech broker and the engineers slightly move and say a word or two when you interact with them would make a huge difference.

Like this.... why isn't this popping up in our ships in game? Rather than dumped on Youtube??

Come on! Seriously!

Clarification, because as you pointed, what I wrote could be understood in several ways :

I can't be bothered to unlock the engineer part of the character of Ram Tah, because I'm not after the upgrades he offers. That's a gameplay thing, that I feel I don't need, so I'm not using it. That's indeed a choice I made.

However, making this gameplay choice of not bothering with the engineers also has an impact on my enjoyment of the overarching story in Elite Dangerous, which IMO should be completely separated from the gameplay elements locked being a grind wall.

If it was mentionned that unlocking Ram Tah is essential to "make the story progress" (as unlocking a quest-giver in other RPGs), I would have bothered, and unlocked him.

Then again, it wouldn't change very much, because the story is being delivered via Galnet text and community goals, which is why this thread exists, and why I felt like posting my opinion.

The Ram-Tah missions made available previously (scanning items at Guardian locations) were actually available to all players regardless of having Ram Tah unlocked

The CG's that Ram Tah raised to release new things, were also available to all players.

Hopefully the new Galnet audio will make you aware of news and events in the galaxy.

It may not though. I got the mission from Ram Tah for the guardian mission without unlocking him (I have him unlocked now though). I also suspect the stuff you get will be via a tech broker too.

I'm very new to the game (loving it) and didn't think much of the story side of things until I had my bearings. Had I seen that video in the game I would've done what I could immediately.

It was great! It provided story, a call to action and urgency.

Players would have loved that in game.

I guess the standard response from FDev will be UI problems etc etc - well make the UI work or give us multiple interfaces by getting us out of our seats and playing with new screens and computers. The automatic voice Galnet thing is a weak crutch.

BINGO!

Ram Tah was instrumental in far more than his engineering offerings. No other engineer character in the game has had as much player engagement to date.

Blowing all that off is a player's choice. Failing to deduce the fact that engaging with this character goes far beyond the modules he can upgrade for you is an oversight by that particular player.

Nothing FDEV can do about that. The hand holding can only go so far.

How can I know of this mission ? I am supposed to receive a message telling me to go somewhere ? It's a genuine question.

IRL I know you have to go to the Meene system because I read it on the forums, but how does my ingame character get this info ?

Yea it's such a shame that "Story mode" is essentially the training missions. I would like to see more of that in game, and I'm sure it'll come.

The thing is...

If we were playing ELITE : Dangerous on our Pentium II's or Athlons and the year was 1999 or 2000, I'd say everything was completely normal.
Get pre-rendered Videos to narrate (albeit in-game of course) via Cutscenes while keeping the technically limited Game Engine to deliver its part while playing.

But... we're in 2018. Stuff like that is supposed to be viewable in realtime and being rendered in-game using the existing 3D Engine. Industry Standard. Since a long, long time I might add.
Now not all Games or Genres need it that way obviously, but ELITE sure does IMHO.
Voice Audio and SFX to go along could still be delivered on-demand off the Servers, giving the flexibility they need on the SFX part of the content delivery.

T2S addition to the Text-Only GALnet is one thing (better than nothing), but even that tech is over 20 years old.
In essence it's still small Text snippets. All of these should have fully (3D cinematic) enacted Cutscenes using in-game Graphics. Every single one. Sound & Video sell news and gets attention.
(arguably... GALnetNET having often missed the most critical details in its reports, such as precise Locations and Coordinates of events inviting Players to investigate didn't help either)
Small Text blocks? Hardly. That's 1990's Game style from the 8/16bit era. "Full Retro" has some merits, it just doesn't seem to fit ELITE very well, since it doesn't try to deliver that in other aspects and has no reason to.

I actually hate ED's cinematic trailers. I put off buying it initially because of the release trailer, which was just terribad imo. This one is cringe worthy, too. If I wasn't already into ED, it would convince me to stay away.

so, everyone use cinematic video to promote their games, but if frontier do so, that's no good.
ok

Galnet is your friend. Read it to keep up to date with what is going on. Galnet will also be easier to get to in the new update. Hopefully in the future there will be galaxy map links in the galnet stories too.

New trailer...

My question is - all this animation and voice acting... WHY ISN'T IT IN GAME?

Put it on a Comms panel? Talking heads on screen? Faces and story in game? All so important and lacking atm.

EDIT:

I don't understand why this wasn't in game either? This would have been more effective popping up in our ships rather than being dumped on Youtube. (It would also reach 100% of everyone in the game... rather than the percentage that found it online)

Honestly - great video. Got a real buzz from it - but it should be a gameplay thing. Voice acting, animations and story - what we all want!

...Are you making a game here or not FDev?

Would be great to get some of this in-game. Especially the emergency broadcast one.

That was awesome! Can’t wait to find out what that thing was at the end.
Guardian Skimmers? Guardian ships? Non-Guardian things?
