Had to stop engineering because I tested a weapon maybe 10m inside the no fire zone.

Check again:
- (reckless) weapons discharge should be a fine, not a bounty. Eithe of those will limit you to Anonymous Access, though.
- you should be able to pay off a fine at the contacts of the issuing faction. Not sure whether Engineer bases have (or should have) an Authority Contact. The orbiting station (or next ground base) should have one in any case.

Reading the bug reports, not everything is currently working as planned, so in your case I'd check against the 3.0 release notes and if in doubt submit a bug report.

Checking for the no fire zone is simple, though: speed up to 101 m/s. If you see the "speeding" tag, you're still inside.

(Note: this won't work at stations controlled by Anarchy factions, which do have a no fire zone but don't enforce the speed limit :) )

Can't you tell when you are 10 km out?

:D S

Nope, was very careful to deselect the station before firing long range PAs in any direction. Didn't want any misunderstandings....oh, wait... ;)

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the no fire zone extends further than the speeding zone. Apologies if I'm wrong. I also believe that the distances are different at surface bases.

Phone rang while I was landing at an Engineer yesterday, and I got a fine for pad loitering. Landed with Anonymous Access, went to the Authority Contact (only thing that was accessible), paid it, and back to business as usual in 10 seconds.

So, you most 100% certainly can pay off fines at Engineer's bases, even with Anonymous Access.

[Edit: The Engineer was Lei Cheung - I got the Pad Loitering fine because his station is on a 1.3G planet, and my ship lost altitude while I was deal with the phone call]

Must have been the bug everyone's talking about then. Good news.

Yeh, good point, cos there's an indicator that tells you when you're in the...oh, wait, no there isn't. ;)

Open up the centre crew panel display, there is a display that tells you if you are in the NFZ, should still work even if you don't have an NPC crew, I sometimes check when I can launch a fighter near a station. Also thought there was an audio message from the station controller telling you when you are out of the NFZ, but only happens when you are leaving the NFZ.

the NFZ is slightly further out than the speed limit zone (at most types of stations)

EDIT - The devs could put that centre panel to much better use, so many little QoL bits of detail they could add, front and centre while you are flying.

Definitely couldn't pay it off at the engineer base. Anonymous access.

You can still pay off fines locally I thought with Anonymous access?

If the Engineer does not have the contact so you need to go to another nearby station that's just needlessly frustrating...

Hello Commanders!

Just to weigh in on this:

It looks like there has been a bug sometimes preventing you pay off fines and bounties at Interstellar Factors. A server side fix has been deployed, so please submit a bug if you encounter this (remember, to use Interstellar Factors your Notoriety must be zero).

You should always be able to pay off fines at a security contact, so please check this avenue if you get fines near ports (I think every Engineer base should have a security contact, please submit a bug it you find one that doesn't).

In general though, don't fire guns near any port if you want to ensure legality. No Fire Zones have alwayes existed, and they cover large volumes.

Thanks very much for the clarification Sandy, much appreciated as always.

THanks Sandro, I appreciate the response, but should I not have been able to pay it at the base that issued it? It was just a fine, not a bounty.

Yes, you should have been able to pay it off (as said before, I was able to pay my fine). Are you 100% sure you couldn't pay it?

I can't honestly remember whether there were contacts and the specific fine didn't show up, or if the base had no contacts at all. One of the two though. I'll check again tonight and freely admit I am an idiot if that turns out to be the case. :)

Yeh, gonna have to add my voice to this new CnP stuff.

I was engineering my new PAs at Bill's place, all was goin well, I took off, set low throttle to move a few km out, went to get a glass of water, came back, assumed I was outside the no fire zone, fired my PAs at the ground. Bam, fine for weapons discharge, at almost the exact same moment as being told I had left the no-fire zone. No more engineering for you until you find, visit and pay at, an interstellar factors, then make your way back to the engineer.

It;s not the end of the world, but it's a HUGE step backwards in terms of making the game more fun to play.

I thought fines (as opposed to bounties) could be still be paid in the contacts panel?

P.S. Ninj'd, read back through the thread after posting :)

I vaguely remember getting vox from the ATC saying something like "Warning, Commander. You are within the security perimeter. Safe your weapons immediately" when I rolled out eh hardpoints in the NFZ one time, but I could easily be imagining it. It was a while ago and the memory is very vague.

If I was imagining it, adding it would probably be a good thing.
If I wasn't, bringing it back and making it always trigger would also be a good thing.

Fines shouldn't be making life difficult... I thought only bounties did that?

A fine is supposed to be a minor annoyance, which can escalate if unpaid.

I'd post a bug report.
