3.0 offers absolutely no protection against big player ships griefing small player ships

It wouldn't require any extra work since what UmbraRex described is how the game modes already work. The difference between clicking Open and clicking PG is whom the matchmaking servers instance you with.

Well in that case, that could work. but does this idea mean that "Flag offs" can't talk and communicate with "Flag ons"?

We have constant complaints about combat logging, PVP Balance, the massive popularity of Private groups like Mobius. Theses are problems other "Cut throat" PVP games don't have. Obviously something is wrong

Its US...the Player base, playing Elite makes idiots of us all...and brings out the VERY worst in many...
Read this forum...then go look at say the DCS Forum/IL2/Falcon 4.0 or maybe say the Stellaris Forum etc (I'm using examples I'm familiar with)
Do you see these constant biff-sock-pow i'm right you're wrong arguments? Nope...its all about playing the game/enjoying the game/supporting new players etc etc...
There's something in the Water in Elite-land that makes us all numpties...

Well, I can communicate with anyone on my friends list who is online, regardless of mode. However I can only communicate with other CMDRs not on my friends list if a) I saw them in an instance and b) they are currently online.

SO, if they are on my friends list I would, logically, be able to communicate across the flag off/flag on barrier. If not on my friends list they would never have instanced with me so I wouldn't know they existed thus would not be able to communicate with them.

Assuming the flag I don't think will ever get implemented gets implemented in this manner.

The galaxy is largely lawless, always dangerous and often cruel.

Yet, strangely enough the Galaxy seems to have free trade, open shipping lanes and minimum law-enforcement...
Its almost as if the Galaxy (outside RES Zones and CZs etc) is relatively safe...and pirates have a symbiotic relationship with their victims (realising that you can't rob someone you've already blown up...and can't make money in a system with no trade)
Except for players of course...the normal rules don't apply to them...

Very few other games have such an entitled subset of people that take it as the greatest injustice in the history of the earth when they get attacked against their will.

Why do people have such a fixation with making the galaxy a safe, happy, kumbaya singing group of hippies that do nothing but 07, take screenshots with each other, and offer help out of the goodness of their heart? The galaxy is largely lawless, always dangerous and often cruel.

Who's asking for a peaceful space? I'm not, if that's what you're saying. I love my galaxy dangerous (I'm not going for the obvious pun)
I'm just seeing Frontier scramble around and waste time, effort and money they could be putting towards Space Legs and Atmophsphere Landings, trying to make gankers have consequences for their actions when they never will.

the playing field is one-sided once you get a ship significantly bigger than someone else or when you use the "Ramming" thing that the OP's friend just experienced. All I'm saying is that PVP should be consensual. That's what MMO's have if I'm not mistaken.

Or you could infer that few other gaming communities would put up with and defend people whose primary Game interaction is randomly attacking other Players for no "in-game" reason...Anywhere else you'd just be banned from the Servers...

Why do people have such a problem with understanding the difference between a video game and reality?

Have you ever PLAYED any other open world PvP enabled games?

These exact same arguments have been coming up in every game that was not centered around PvP but allowed it since online multiplayer games have existed.

All the way back to text based MUDS.

The galaxy doesn't seem 'relatively safe' to me, at all.

When I see massacre missions on a board, I think that I'm in about the worst place I've been in my fantasy life. Worse than any scenario in any film or book I've ever read, personally. Have you seen those mission boards?

That's the galaxy we're flying in.

But, it's consistent. The core concept of Elite is that you're as safe as what you travel with. Because it's you, or you, your SLF pilot and your wingmates ... versus whatever comes for you.

You keep claiming an in-game reason is ever necessary. It isn't. It's a game, I play it for fun. Fun for me is PvP. Sometimes I do duels, sometimes, I pick a random Python and I want to see who's better between me and him. That is a legitimate choice. Same as in GTA where you see another player on the street, and you can choose to kill him. Or DayZ, where getting killed out of nowhere is extremely common and basically just accepted as part of the game. Same with Rust. It's an open world free for all game. Getting got happens, some people live to hand out Ls.

The system I'm talking about would have everyone be able to speak and wing-up with everyone so they experience Elite: Dangerous their way and engage in PVP when they're ready. that's the whole point of the "FLAG". other than that, Private and Solo is what you're kinda getting at.

BUT all of the PVP flag offs are all going to be in the same instance together so that would (IN THEORY) group up all the ones that don't want to fight, solving the problem BUT you have to realize that space might be a lot more dangerous for the "FLAG" ons because everyone with they're consenting to combat at all times.

Such innovation you have invented Open and Mobius. This would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Yes, there will always be some of the Player base who come from games full of "Gangsta's" and "Zombies"...and there ALSO always be Players who come to Elite from Flight or Space games...
Strangely enough their views of Gameplay are generally VERY different...they'll usually want an "In-Game" or "Mission-based" reason for things...an internal logic if you will rather than "just for Lolz"

That's why I proposed "FLAGS" as a solution. Gankers can't kill smaller players for the sake of (its funny) and you can still fight players, Python VS (Insert ship here).

So, your entire argument boils down to "My views are superior because of my taste in video games."

I remember why I don't usually spend much time on the forums now, the rampant superiority complexes and insistence that there is a single right way to play Elite, and it definitely doesn't involve fun for fun's own sake.

Same as in GTA where you see another player on the street, and you can choose to kill him.

You have to note that GTA also put in a "Going Dark" mode that prevents other players from killing them. it wasnt there at first, it was added later because players would harass others for no good reason, making running through the game unfun.

I don't see a problem here.

There was a game, closed in the last couple years, Asheron's Call.

There were multiple servers, and all had a PvP flag you could turn on or off. Except one. That one, Darktide, was All PvP all the time. It had the lowest population of the servers by a LARGE factor. People who liked that playstyle played there. People who didn't played on the other servers and, if they wanted some PvP turned their PvP flags on. And the people on Darktide ridiculed those on the other servers, saying they were in easy mode and called them carebears, even the PvPers...

Nothing changes people. Nothing at all.

Not necessarily Superior...just different...I just bemoan the fact that Frontier went out and chased that MMO crowd rather than aiming the game squarely at Space Combat/Flight Combat enthusiasts...in the same way you must be disappointed that so many people here don't want Elite to end up as an MMO/EvE/WoW clone...
Different strokes for different folks...
