My Cobra is rather well engineered now. Top tier engines, really good FSD, crazy wide scanners, decent range FSDI. The lasers are good. Shields are okay... Speed is my defence. Going to work on engineering the missiles soon.

I think it's time to improve my combat ranking. Guys, any tips? I only hit novice yesterday!

Compromised NAV Beacons used to have the highest concentration of high-ranked NPCs and I believe they still do.

I remember hitting those to quickly rank up my NPC Crews. Should be good hunting grounds for a Cobra, since Ship types always cover everything from small to big.

And if you're going to Comp Nav's, make sure you aren't carrying any cargo, or you'll be testing them thrusters a fair bit more than you'd like.....

Not really in a position to give any good advice : my combat rank is very old, back then the fastest way to rank up was in CZ. I would not recommend that nowadays. Still, have some rep OP, Cobra fighting is awesome :D

If you haven't already learn to retract weps and high wake/low wake in a hurry whilst evading once you can do that all fights are a win as death becomes entirely optional. Setting a key for next system in route and setting a route in the gal-map before you go looking for trouble means you very quickly start a high wake.

In a speedy build get into some CZ's, stay with the friendlies and don't get isolated if (when) things go wrong just throttle up and you are golden, grab massacre missions for money. In a cobra most NPC's wont regard you as a high threat so you'll go largely untouched (in theory). You could always do the res site thing, stay away from hazardous ones till you are confident of not needing the space police for help. If you want to start small and work up fit an interdictor and pick your fights from SC. Nav beacons are like res sites but without the big dangerous rocks for a proper noob start, compromised ones are more fun but no police.

Fixed weps really are worth mastering but take practice to be effective.

I always go for lightweight scanners as it gives a small speed boost and I always point at the things I'm scanning anyway.

PIP management is absolutely crucial, especially in a Cobra. Don't leave them in 2-2-2 all the time even when fighting NPCs. Throw them around when needed and don't face tank large ships, hit and run tactics FTW in the Cobra.

Stay away from high ranked FAS until you have a shield tank*.
Be careful with Elite Eagles and Sidewinders unless you can one or two shot kill them.
Double check if a FGS has a SLF hangar.
Aim for Elite Anacondas (if they don't have a hangar).

*) or a hull tank and good module protection and are willing to repair your ship after each encounter

increasing your combat rank and learning combat are different things, just saying. Which one is the one you are after?

Preferably learning how to run this Cobra. I should point out that my tactics for PvP vs PvE are completely different. PvP, I am 100% an evader. I don't even deploy weapons. PvE, however, and I'm trying to teach myself how to use my speed as a weapon.
