Modes Play in open is not what some would have you believe!

So, I have not been on the forum in a few days. I log in today and right at the top is a week old thread "Open play trolls"! One person complaining they got attacked and 65 pages pf people debating this. I randomly scanned the posts and it is the same things over and over.

So I thought I shared my POSITIVE experience in open.

I was flying around Wyrd this week. Running missions and gathering Mats for some Dweller upgrades. Flying to all the close by systems running my missions. One night I encountered at least 15 other Commanders. I was not attacked once! I exchanged greetings with a few of them and we all went about our business. Ships from Cobras to Chieftains to Anacondas! Ranks of all kinds!

As the title says, don't be afraid to play in open. It is not the gank fest some on these forums would have you believe just so they can get their agenda implemented.

If you get attacked, now you know there is a jerk in that system, go somewhere else. If you need to do something in that system then yes, switch to solo or PG (i.e. A CG). Understand that yes, there are some dangerous places in this game and there are some jerks just like any other game. Understand where they might gather. i.e. Community Goals, birth systems, Engineers (though I have only been attacked once at an engineer. I won and we had a nice chat afterwords).

Now that we have more chances to play together (wing missions, etc.), Open gives you the chance to meet other players and interact, make friends. Playing in Solo/PG defeats the whole purpose of a multi-player game.

I just thought I would share something positive regarding playing in Open.

DISCLAIMER: I am neither a greifer/ganker nor a PVPer. Though I would not run from a PVP encounter I thought was evenly matched.

Who cares about Open? Why does it even matter whether people are in it or not?

This is basically a single-player game with poor MMO functionality.

The last part of the above is primarily why I avoid Open and prefer Solo or PGs. The game just runs smoother and more reliably in the other two modes. And 99% of the time, the actual MP aspects in Open are non-existent. But the performance deficiencies are in full view all of the time.

Why would anyone be afraid to play in Open? I guess if you are allergic to Rubber Banding and are terrified of being stuck in Blue Tunnels all the time, it could be a stressful experience. ;)

Which is why I play SP only in all my games. Or, in this particular case, Solo/PG.

I understand that. I also don't need to think about it because I, you've guessed it, play in Solo/PG

Now that we have more chances to play together (wing missions, etc.),

Nope. I do that with my brother in PG. It's loads of fun.

Open gives you the chance to meet other players and interact, make friends.

Interact? Have you ever read the chat in open? I'll stick to ignoring the world in Solo/PG.

Hiding in Solo/PG defeats the whole purpose of a multi-player game.

Hint. It's not hiding, it's playing the game the way it was designed. It's not a multi-player game, it's a solo game with a quarter-hearted MP add-on to appease the "I need more swearing teenagers in my life" brigade.

How many threads are there telling people they really ought to get out of Open and play in Solo? Exactly. Because Solo/PG is so obviously the better way to play it doesn't need a defensive thread every week.

Zero interest. With limited time, I don't have the resource or freedom to have some *insert noun of your choice here* get their kicks from randomly destroying whatever I've been able to build up in the little time I have.

Open is just another PG AFAIAC. What if there was no Open?

Hiding in Solo/PG defeats the whole purpose of a multi-player game.

And it's not hiding. That's just how you are trying to mildly shame people to go to Open.

Also, PGs do not 'defeat the purpose of a MMO'. On the contrary, they promote multi-player gaming, just not on the scale you want it to be.

OP is right! Open is a fantastic place, full of unicorns, free candy, and cheese-wiz! Just a few months ago I met one of my best friends in Elite in open. Sure, I killed him in his hauler! But then I seen his ship respawn and jump back to supercruise! We talked, introduced him to my private group for some intense noob training, and BAM! Great pilot, natural. Just picked up his corvette a couple weeks ago. Been past Sag A, and enjoying the game.

Death isn't the end. Its how you meet Satan.... who often enough, has valuable advice on surviving.... nah, THRIVING!

Always in open, sometimes in Solo because mission refresh. Then back to open. 3 years playing and never once shot at or interdicted by a player. Shame, because it would be nice to test my shields.

It is not about being afraid. Like you said ".... go somewhere else...." why should I alter my gameplay because of someone else? Open world offers many unexpected encounters, you have to adapt to those situations. But I am not looking that in ED, I enjoy cruising around in my spaceship, do some missions, shoot at npcs and make cash. I like it being predictable, where I am in control of my gameplay. :)

Wow, what an odd response to a perfectly reasonable post where a player is describing their experiences. Obviously you cared enough to comment no? It's amazing seeing the reaction this harmless post is getting from certain people...

I used to play open....then I came here and read a thread touting 'situational awareness' or some such regarding system factions blah blah snoozefest. Failure to do so could result in you being destroyed without warning cos you shouldn't have come to system y without knowing there was some turf war going on.
PG ever since o7
