Not a bad idea, but it would have to be limited to cosmetics, or
maybe new wheel / track / hover layouts that permit easier movement over some terrain types. Anything that gave a cargo capacity increase, and especially new weapons, would immediately be accused of pay-to-win. Even the new propulsion methods would probably fall foul of this to some degree unless carefully balanced, hence the qualifying "
maybe".
Someone in another thread suggested rudimentary space legs might make for a good initial DLC and I'm inclined to agree. The ability to EVA on planetary surfaces would:
- Add aesthetically pleasing activities to the game without adding to or impacting current gameplay.
- Appease those LEP owners who don't see extra gameplay as a requirement for early space legs, two groups from which there is definitely a crossover.
- Sell to wanderlustful players who don't already have a LEP, especially if bundled with a discounted Horizons option for those who don't already have it.
- Open a new line of purchasable cosmetics in the store. Maybe even movie-themed spacesuits if the licenses are obtainable, or "inspired by" designs if they're not.
- Provide a foundation on which to build EVA-related gameplay down the line.
- Not annoy those players who've said that they don't yet want space legs without gameplay. They can ignore it and aren't forced to buy it.
About the only group who might gripe are those who have an LEP but who don't want cosmetic-only space legs. They might grouse that they still don't have anything worthwhile to show for their LEP investment, and there'd be some truth in that. But FD would have fulfilled in part their obligation to provide something to the LEP owners, while establishing a foundation for something that those players will want to embrace once the gameplay is added down the line.
But we all know it'll probably be another ship, with the exact same specifications as an existing ship for balance reasons, but a different model. Because, you know, Frontier.
