Any tricks for finding high grade USS?

Having previously spent all of 1/2 a day gathering loads of rare materials and getting everything I needed, I'm planning on engineering and exploraconda and have been searching for HG USS on and off for the last 2 days and found literally 3 sites.

Is there a trick to finding systems where there are lots of them? I've been to various systems with the state appropriate to the type of materials I'm after but am not having any luck.

Have HG USS perhaps been conspiratorially nerfed to make us use the materials traders or anything like that?

Generally speaking the higher the population count of a system the better (speaking about billions here). They spawn in deep space areas (most likely) and now around planets since the first Beyond patch. I'd recommend you'd stick to deep space areas, because there you won't have that much noise (like spawning distress signals, ceremonial comms, etc.).

You'll also have to consider what kind of material or data you want to collect. Certain materials only spawn during specific system states or faction allegiances.

Not really helpful when you're farming something specific like you are now, but I've made a habit of targeting every single USS I come across during normal gameplay just to see what type it is. Most of the time it's something I don't care about and I continue with my journey, but HGE's occur often enough to make scanning them worthwhile.

Go for high population systems. Cruise around about 1000LS from the main body in 'Deep Space', circling it at a supercruise speed low enough to stop in time for things.

Yep, it's population based. It's actually better now because we have individual storage, so instead of picking the 30th highest population (with very specific system conditions) to avoid other mats, you can happily gather them now.

Go to EDDB.IO and filter by population. Systems over 20 billion population tend to spawn quite a bit. Fly out into deep space.

Encoded good now too, you can grab datamined wake exceptions from them.

From my post on another thread:

The spawn rates have increased, but not in deep space so much. Have been looking at this for a few days:

1. Pick system type you want - boom/hi-pop/indie etc.
2. Look for a system with a large station over 750ls from main star.
3. Circle station at about 500ls (zone of influence?)
4. USS will pop much more frequently than in deep space.

Just traded max cargo of Proto Heat Radiators for something more useful

Worked for me!

Also worth checking the system security - high security is better for HGEs. Last time I went looking for them I just set the galaxy map filter to show high sec and flew around nearby systems, worked out quite well.

The material descriptions in the blueprints usually offer good clues as to where you can find stuff. Also remember the material traders - just collect everything and then trade for the stuff you need!

OK, thanks all, high pop, deep space it is. Fairly sure I haven't been to any very high pop systems to search. I'll try and factor in high security too and will investigate blueprints.

DWEs I've picked up by wake scanning today. Only 9 but it's better than nothing.

They spawn more frequently in the vicinity of Hutton Orbital in Alpha Centauri.

And I bet if I travel there at 30km/s there will be so many USS around Hutton that when I have collected everything I will have nowhere to store the mug ;) :)

At the risk of upsetting all the people who swear by their own little systems, I don't think there is much of a "trick" to it - beyond being in the right part of space.

At the risk of contradicting the previous sentence, the only "trick" I use is to stick to a "sweet-spot" if I find one.

Arrive in a suitable system, head away from the orbital-plane at a speed of <50c and wait for the HGEs to start rolling in.
If the spawn rate starts to drop off, turn around and head back toward the star.

Main thing is to make sure you're in a suitable system and, if you're looking for a specific thing, make sure you're not in a system that can spawn other things as well.

It's working :)

pop 2.3b, war status, high security "crawling" along at c2.5 = 2 x HG USS so far gave me MGA and MSC which means the exploraconda can have g5 lightweight armor as planned.

Thanks again :)

I have a method that never fails. Engage FSD. Right has the countdown hits 0 and you can no longer disengage, you will notice an unidentified signal source. I promise you, 100% of the time, if you could have disengaged your FSD and targeted the USS, it would have been a high grade.

Pretty much this. I do find that a weaving pattern between 3.5 kls and 1kls deep space works best. You definitely want a population in the billions as well.

I already got the free one from Hutton, can you get 2? I wouldn't mind an exploraconda and a destroyaconda as well.
