Is JWE good or bad for ED?

Jurassic Park Evolution is nothing but good for Elite: Dangerous. For one thing, JWE will be released pretty much as a completed game, apart from bug fixes, which is very different from Elite: Dangerous which we knew would be expanded on a fleshed out over a prolonged life span. Aside from bug fixes and potential DLCs the future maintenance of JWE won't be quite a extended as the future expansion of Elite. This means that Elite should benefit from much of the revenue generated by this new game.

Most likely because such games are incredibly hard to make. I think real life data supports such conclusion :)

This. X is trade empire game, and EvE is strategic meta game. They are both strategies. ED is none of those things, at least not at fundamental level.

There's lots of indirect competition for ED - other entertainment - and that's enough to keep devs on their toes.

Yep horses for courses.

I'd like a remake of x-wing/tie-fighter or something new for some campaign based space dogfighting, which is a totally different sub-branch of ED's wider genre. Unfortunately the best options for that right now are freespace2 mods.

I've seen this argument made many times, and it doesn't make a lot of sense.
"Is the Ford Focus bad news for the Ford Fiesta?"
No.

I always felt that Ford should have stuck with the model T.
It is madness to create other models and learn from the process and develop new knowledge.
Companies should only do one thing and not change, and certainly not develop themselves.
Who has heard of such a thing? It is absurd.

Yours doesn't?
I always felt stepping into a For Fiesta automatically transported you back at least 10 years.

That's the lack of headroom effecting bloodflow in your skull, I miss my fiesta it had an issue with the throttle jamming open that could be quite exhilarating. Cured by pulling off the air intake and cleaning away the gunk so the valve could actually close.

The dashboard looked a bit like an a-wings cockpit as well.

Don't get me started.
I have great difficulty understanding the demise of the Star Wars gaming franchise. So many missed opportunities.

Just imagine what a current day X-Wing / TIE-fighter game would look like.
I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful military campaigns in those games and I spent countless hours designing my own campaigns with the 3d party editors.
I loved the diversity of magnificent capital ships (ED really needs that too) and the stories I could tell with the campaign editors. That was so awesome.

But I also feel that the Star Wars universe, like no other, would be awesome for an Elite-like open Galaxy spacesim.
All the stories and fluff are already there to use. And everybody knows the ships, the space stations, the technology, the characters etc.

The problem is that many publishers/developers think they need to create multiplayer games/MMO's out of everything. Sadly EA is such a publisher/developer. Just imagine CDProjekt creating a Star Wars game instead of EA!
To me the MMO/multiplayer route is such a waste of energy and resources, and it severely limits the possibilities of personal story campaigns.

I would pay big money for a new X-Wing/TIE-fighter game or an open world Star Wars Spacesim without horrible MMO shenanigans.

Even ED's loudest detractors admit the flight model is great, Lucasarts need to license the Cobra engine and do a direct remake of the x-wing games just ditch maneuvering thrusters and you are already most of the way there as far as flying goes. Keep the old missions as exact remakes even, don't even need new voice actors/music.

Unfortunately anything x-wingy is looking to be a simplified console port with auto levelling, auto-aim and probably lootboxes. And that irritating robot from x-wing alliance [mad].

Unless FDEV do it once JWE's all polished raising their Hollywood profile <hint for DBOBE>.

So what do you think, is JWE the beginning or the end of ED?
Who cares about JWE, it is clever but so what? It is just another Planet Coaster type project.

ED is far from done, the people working on JWE are probably an entirely different team.

We're probably going to need dinosaurs to help drive the Thargoids away, so...

Jurassic World Evolution is good for Elite: Dangerous.

I don't see how a successful new title could be detrimental to any existing ones.
In the end it benefits the company as a whole and therefor it's entire portfolio of games, including ED.

If Frontier uses the atmospheric tech of JWE for ED then hopefully we'll get atmospheric planets right after the Beyond season (december 2018 or Q1 2019).

I'd like to hunt alien creatures in first person and the SRV.

Watching the helicopter hunting the dinosaur for the tranquility gun shot, with the trees and grass waving, I was imagining a T-10 hovering to fire tranquility beams at the creature, then scoop it up in a big net.

I only recently (about a year ago) became interested in Frontier because ED was announced for the PS4, so I don't really know the company like some of you do. That's why I'm looking for your insight.

Optimistic view - Jurassic World Evolution is a good thing for Elite Dangerous, because it will infuse more money into the company and perhaps provide the software routines needed to give ED landable earth-like worlds with living creatures running around NMS style, but better! [yesnod]

Pessimist view - JWE is a shift in the company's focus, and resources are being diverted away from ED to focus on this new project. It seems like Frontier "spared no expense" in creating JWE, whereas ED feels like a back-burner project these days.. :(

So what do you think, is JWE the beginning or the end of ED?

watched the sales video only today, and to be honest, it's impressive gameplay etc, but not exactly my cup of tea

If JWE does well, it's good for ED, and FD. More money, good reputation! Woot!

If JWE flops, it'll probably be bad for FD. Bad publicity and profits.
ED will remain unaffected, most likely.
