Almost played Elite Dangerous - nearly inspired by a gunship

I'm kind of the reverse to the OP as I have all the mats I need, all the blue prints pinned and the money such that if I bought a new ship I could probably pimp all the way to the max before I even lift it of the pad.

My problem is I can't really think of a good reason to buy any ships beyond the ones I have.

I 'only' have seven ships the sidey, Cobra MKII, Python, FDL, AspX, a conda and T9 . For me those adequately cover all the games roles.
In fact I now mainly fly the AspX and for trade and BH CG's and missions the FDL and T9.

I still collect mats whenever I feel like it so they are there if I need them.
Most of my mat collection sites are bookmarked, I know HGE's can change over time but in all honestly I don't really have problems getting them.

I also agree with some other posters that engineering is not mandatory, especially if you are playing anything other than open.

Thanks OP! Great insight! I was going to play Elite too...but realised I'd got some work reports to catch up on...bet everyone here REALLY cared about that!

Can't help but think...if Engineering REALLY is your problem...you know just Engineer it up to top G3 status with Common Mats...if you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT handle NPCs without Engineering...

I'd have to reinstall and then grind to be able to play decently again on top? No thanks.
 
I will state this after re-engineering my fgs it is even more fun than the old funship gunship. Its worth doing - do it. Multi-cannons, dakka, fixed, rail. Bang. Unleash your inner Arnie.

Edit: It also didnt take long to re-engineer it.

No need to grind for anything to get G3 mats as you can get them when doing missions. Do ground based missions and get some mats doing that, scan ships when in supercruise to get mats. Get manufactured mats with missions.

No grind is needed. You keep saying that you need to grind to do any engineering and you really do not. Even most of the unlocks you don't need to grind. It's all about the method you go about doing it.

Could not agree more - i also find farming money and mats in a haz res can net you some good stuff. Especially on the golden anaconda drops when they give me precious g5 mats.
 
Admittedly this (materials search/engineering) has prevented me from purchasing any new ships. I am a long way from upgrading the 12 ships I have from the first iteration of engineers.
It’s such a massive chore that only four of my core ships are receiving the full treatment. The rest can whistle.

I'll look at it again when there is some explore update. At least I'd not have to put up with AI pimpships out there.
 
There's no real "point" to Elite is there? Other than what you make of it. Obvious first contender is the money grind. Then the rank grinds. After two years, how do you keep people going? Oh yeah, here comes a material grind ;) I'm hoping to be drawn in to the storyline at some point. A war where all players are on the same side vs NPCs? Sounds great to me. Not happened yet though. I tried the explorathon of the first guardian mission but tbh, jumpjumpjumpjump is boring. 3303 - you can have a docking computer, faster-than-light drives, alien technology, but not a basic system-jumping autopilot (/ co-pilot) !

I don't think any of my ships currently have the full treatment. It's not important. I upgrade them as I go along.
 
I have now adopted this approach also, regarding my eight lesser used ships. ...That will now take some time.
The only ship I would purchase and engineer fully now would be a new and dedicated exploration ship...

Have you done any exploring? Seen a black hole or planetary nebula in game?

I recommend this OP. Don't quit just yet.

If you engineer an FSD to max, and put on efficiency to an ASP explorer, it's only about 85 jumps to the Cats Paw nebula. But if you don't engineer it'll probably be about 150 jumps. That's only 150 times you have to line up, warp, line up, warp, line up, warp, scoop, line up, warp, line up, warp....

Put on a good film, listen to your fav music OP. The company is much welcome after 20 jumps!

Some of the engineering grind is a bit daft. 5000 ly travels, 4 hours of mining.... that isn't for everyone and can be fairly boring for people not intrigued by it. Maybe that should be toned down a little. )That said, finding the perfect system for painite mining with obscene local prices was actually fun.

The instance hopping on bases / anaconda wrecks is akward, just give a high number of mats and do regular respawn mechanics instead. I also think we should be allowed to pin experimental effects. Lugging your 20ly combat ship around is a waste of time and doing base-hopping and switching ships feels clunky.

Still, most of it can be carried out next to normal activities. You don't need immediate jump to G5 unless you're heavily into PvP. The new mat traders mean you can do mission running for lvl 4-5 mats and trade for most of what you need.

The gunship is fun if you like to feel like pulling that trigger unleashes hell. It's a bit clunky to manouver for my tastes, but blowing stuff up quickly doesn't really get old.

I probably will get the Krait when it comes out. I like SLF but I am not a big fan of the look of the Gun ship. I have one, but I just don't fly it. The keelback is a bit limited. So I am hoping the Krait will fit the bill as we need a bigger SLF capable medium sized ship which isn't rank locked.

I also don't fly the big ships. I may do when there is a full on NPC system implemented though, as I can imagine flying one of the big 3-5 with a proper crew would feel a bit different then having the smaller ships.

Or you could explore systems on the way to break up the gameplay. There are always options available.
