Seems as the last thread is now locked, I thought I'd start a new one, on this absolutely rubbish movie... So far. I'm still watching it. :D

I just fancied pointing out some massive errors I've noticed already.

The first error I spotted, was in the big market scene when the main dude has his hand in that inter dimensional box thingie.
Towards the end of that scene when Valerian is swinging from those basket thingie, he's clearly holding on with his invisible hand. Lol

Then a few moments later, his hand isn't even invisible and is flipping it around while he runs. CGI failure!

Then they mentioned the massive space station has travelled 700 million miles.

In 400 years.

What are they doing? Walking?

Voyager 1&2 are 1.2 billion miles away now.

Basically, they're about as far out as Saturn. Lol

So far, so crap. But I'll keep watching until I can't take it anymore. :D

It is a shame, really. So much good material for Luc Besson to make a movie out of, and he botches it completely. He seems to have lost the ability to make good movies lately.

Easy to find little continuity errors and such, but the real problem is not the sloppy editing or minor inconsistencies, the main issue is how the Valerian & Laureline universe is depicted. The space-time travelling agent pair is a well-established couple in the graphic novels, and part of what makes the series special is their relationship and how they stay together in a very fluctuating and chaotic universe. Also, the imaginations and artistry of Christin and Mezieres are phenomenal, and have inspired pretty much everything from Star Wars and onwards. Besson then goes on to scale the relationship of the heroes back to a rather dumb 'romance', botch up the story of the Shadow Ambassador to the point where delving further into the V&L universe becomes difficult, and makes a poorly edited movie out of it...

Mezieres worked with Besson before, on the fantastic 5th Element. Originally they were trying to make a Valerian movie, but didn't manage to get that working. 5th Element is decent Valerian-type fare, and if you want to see more of Mezieres concept art for it, read the Valerian and Laureline graphic novel Circles of Power.

I can forgive the sloppy cinematography, that's basic fare of sci fi movies. But altering the story of Valerian and Laureline like that, the original power couple. Shame on you, Besson. Bad!

Superficial and underdeveloped characters, one of which had overly large eyebrows and clearly loved themselves.
Mish mashy storytelling.

Yes; I think that about sums it up....... a visually intricate film, but ultimately a confused plot.

I finally managed to finish it.

And I wish I hadn't bothered. Lol

How did they survive their planet exploding, when they were just inside a half destroyed cruiser..?

And why did the planet explode, anyway?

Very confusing!

I found the overly large eyebrows distracting.

And Rihanna showing up in it loses points.

Lucas used this comic as the foundation for Star Wars

Have you ever wondered why Blade Runner is called Blade Runner? That doesn't really have much connect to the actual film ? Well If you read the original story then it does!


I would suggest you try to make a movie yourself and then come back to comment.

Jupiter Ascending was good, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was/is a huge blob of stupidity.

Oh and I agree the intro was great and that was about it for this movie.

It's still far better than that trash they claimed was the sequel to Bladerunner which I now hear is considered part of the Alien franchise... Proof Hollywood has lost the plot?

Depends, Luc Beson stuck to the science from the comics to ensure it was 'Valarian' and not some story based on the comics hence you get distances that are far to small to of even left the solar system...

In other words it's a SciFi film in which you have to forget the science as it is irrelevant - Just like Star Wars...

Cosmic has made a mistake in describing a CGI effect which if you watch the scene you can clearly see others interacting between the dimensions just as he does in the rope swinging sequence. As for the rest of the 'issues', first you need to understand the space hulk has just crashed to the planets surface from orbit, without being destroyed - Why then would it fair worse when the planet explodes? Expectation of a known reality is the reason... In a SciFi film...

Why does the planet explode... For that you need to watch the movie but it is very obvious.

It's certainly not Luc's best film but it is far from terrible while remaining a long way from greatness plus it won't put you to sleep with endless, pointless drivel conversations used to pad out so many of today's movies.
