General / Off-Topic Today, I have what I hope is a genuinely respectable question.

Why do so many guys hate on other guys for listening to female singers?

This has come to mind lately, as I have really gotten into symphonic/operatic/gothic metal, and these sub-genres are dominated by female vocalists.

Thing is I actually really like it. Some of the best tunes I've had the pleasure of listening to.

And not all female metal vocalists sing clean. You should hear the death growls of Alissa White Gluz of the band Arch Enemy.

Some of the highest quality death I've heard there.

The more I read from you, the more I am convinced that you are simply living around wrong people.

I love many female singers and nobody never "hated on me" because of it.

Possibly, and I was actually expecting a reply along these lines.

It is because I agree with you. Whilst I am, as you know, rather jealous of the portion of classmates who have achieved success, the rest, and these are the guys who truly identify where I'm from, are off their heads on drugs or having two babies before even leaving their teens.

Very, very, rough area with old fashioned views on what men can and can't enjoy.

Not sure if I have ever been ragged on about my enjoyment of female vocalists. I have a proclivity for '70's pop rock...which I have kept in the closet...because well...who wouldn't give me crap about enjoying singers like the Carpenter's, Dr. Hook, Helen Reddy, or Sean Cassidy? But genuine great female vocalists like Pat Benatar, Blondie, Joan Jett, Tracy Chapman, P!nk, or dare I say Lady Gaga? They are a step above the rest...and everyone should listen to them!

That is a very surprising question.
I did not even know that was a thing.
Where do you live? And what kind of immature guys are you hanging out with?
Perhaps you could educate them on the topic.

I most certainly would never hang with these guys, that's for sure. But if I were caught out listening to Xandria whilst on the bus, I would never see the end of the abuse.

One word: chavs.

If it isn't rap then it's grounds to be abused.

I am truly sorry for your current situation. I left a very conservative, racist, bigoted part of NY (which, as most NY people will attest to is any medium to small town outside the major metropolitan areas)..and now hide deep in the woods of central North Carolina.

It's why I only go out once a month. And that's being generous.

The kind of people I live around aren't nice.

I just find it interesting what views on music can tell you.

I was always interested in this whole idea of suddenly "knowing people" just by finding out what they read/watch/listen to/...
Because it's completely false assumption. One can't really know what other person is like unless they simply get to know them. Which takes time.

Yes, for a trained psychologist, for example, your habits and preferences in music can be indicative of something, but a person who tells me that I am X because I read/listen to/watch/like Y, won't exactly win my heart.

I can't relate, sorry.
We have giant fat men with tiny stringed instruments who can sing in falsetto.

It's also always sunny, the water is warm, and.. And... AND...

Guess what, there are still <insert pejorative>s here too.
There is also crime, oppression, drug abuse, poverty, rampant untreated mental illness, human trafficking etc.
1 in 6 people in Hawai'i lives in poverty.
Now recall we don't have the social network you do.
Things get bad in "paradise" too.

It seems you spend a lot of energy focusing on those around you, and your external environment.
I'm not convinced that's the healthiest way forward.

Think of the term "behavioural health" and ask what kinds of healthy behaviours can you add to your life?
What is directly within your control and what are you going to do about it?
Can you recognize those things you have no control over?
(Don't answer here, that's for you.)

Best wishes Cmdr.
My you never overheat while scooping fuel.

(PS I added the "u" behaviour just for you. See, people care. ;) )

Ye really need to find new m8s before they do any more damage to what ye think passes fer normal. Ive been a fan of Dido since the beginning of her career and most especially when she worked with Faithless back in the 90s and more recently. If one my m8s laughed at me cos I liked a female artist, Id tell them to quit being a richard or Id hit them a slap and laughed at them...

And I live in one the most backward countries in the northern hemisphere so like I say...ye need new m8s ^

If I like the music I will listen to it no matter who is the artist. Sex, color, sexual preference, politics, hairstyle or whatever doesn't bother me, nor does it bother me what anyone else thinks about my musical choices.

I don't pay a lick of attention to new music but many of the classic rock groups and even into the new wave and grunge and metal genres peak my interest. As far as female vocalists go there are many who totally rock and I enjoy hearing.

Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart)
Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac)
Pat Benetar
Joan Jett
Gwen Stefani (No Doubt)
Aretha Franklin
Toni Tennille (Capt & Tennille)
Janis Joplin

....and there are so many more that are not coming off the top of my head at the moment but are also noteworthy.

But OP, like who you like, not what others think you should like or what they think is cool. Their ears aren't yours. Tell them to go p*ss on a sparkplug while you crank up your stereo.

One of my mom's favorites!

Toni Tennille (Capt & Tennille)

Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, PJ Harvey, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett...

For me it's very strange to think in gender terms of them. They are my mates same as John & Paul, Hendrix, Strummer & Jones, Marley... (all straight male here).
