So just before I say all this, I know Americans do have a significant bunch of highly intelligent people. However, what never fails to make me laugh is how so many people seem to think that US law, rights and legalities extend across the world. Sure there's agreements with many countries and many share similar laws like the UK in this instance, but it still makes me smile :)
I mean individual US states have different laws which surely would be the clue that gives the game away, right?

make moderators great again!

well, eee .... sorry to spoil it to you brits and muricans (there's other people in the universe in case you didn't know), but your circus elections are nothing really special. the whole world is going nuts and falling apart, haven't you heard?

now you know!

oh we know there’s a big wide world out there......we ran most of it for quite some time :D

Uh, no. Sorry.

And, boy, did we have to pay/clean up. The division of Iraq was one thing....

It's OK when Americans are banging on about their right to freedom of speech. Get worried when they start going on about their right to buy an enormous collection of military hardware.

the USofA seems to love free speech unless its unpatriotic (please correct me if im wrong). the backlash from whole kneeling during the anthem protests just seemed mental to me, it seemed there was more concern for "disrespecting the flag" rather than the issue of people dying after incidents with the police.

On behalf of otherwise intelligent and educated Americans, I want to apologize for that posters absolute ignorance of what free speech is and how it actually applies. They are not ALL that dumb, though some did vote for Trump so I guess...yeah...I'll see myself out now.

Actually, the Americans did the Brits a great service... For a moment there we were in serious danger of picking up the global idiot award after voting for Brexit... But then salvation came in the form of president Trump... Thank the Americans for grabbing back the global idiot award! I can sleep at night knowing that there are dumber voters out there than Brexiteers [yesnod]

There isn't a consensus on it really. There are plenty of people in support of the kneeling, and plenty opposed, and perhaps even more who don't really care (even with a media working overtime to convince everyone it's super important).

Ultimately, somewhat like claiming freedom of speech on a company's forum, the kneelers are employees of businesses who in no way owe them freedom of speech or a platform to execute it. These businesses have advertisers, and they also use media networks (with their own interests) to deliver their product, as well as a long history of pandering to the working class patriotic types with elaborate ceremonies often including the military. It isn't a freedom of speech issue, it's a business decision.

The multimillionaire athletes with hero worship followings can express themselves just fine by their own means, and with no government restriction as guaranteed. The lack of desire by some to see players disrespect the flag (doesn't bother me personally) when tuning in for a football game in no way means they don't care about the issues at the root of the protests either.

Thanks for the reply and explanation. The way i saw it potrayed in the media over here was very much that the kneeling and the financial losses for the NFL were the main concern and the root issue was glossed over (probably just good pr work by the teams).

i fail to see how anybody who is concerned by the former could have much grasp, let alone show meaningful caring, about the latter, but whatever.

you are spot on in that it's all just business, a really big circus.

It always makes me smile when I see people moaning that their "freedom of speech is being infringed" as a result of internet forum (or social media) activities.

That's kind of like you coming into my living room and ranting about how my wallpaper sucks, my furniture is junk, my carpet is dirty and my dog stinks.
You certainly have the right to say all that stuff but you don't have a right to say it in my living room.

Freedom of speech acknowledges your right to say things without fear of persecution.
It doesn't compel anybody to provide you a platform to say those things.

Also, my dog doesn't stink.
