PvP Why PvP is not popular in Elite Dangerous?

Explain how you play ED to engage in PvP? Do you sign up to do Powerplay task in OPEN protecting a location/ship/convoy, which other players on another Power sign up to attack said location/ship/convoy?

Do you maybe undertake a OPEN only mission to protect a location/ship/convoy in a fighter (thing CQC), holo-me'ing into the location and fighting other players who signed up to attack said location/ship/convoy?

Do you maybe undertake an OPEN only CG specifically offering PvP orientated combat scenarios?

Or do you just fly around interdicting folks at random in OPEN?

ie: I'm sure there would be far more PvP in ED if it actually offered/orchestrated it. But what we have at the moment is a bit of a minimal viable product version of PvP. But then again, after 3-4yrs, that seems to be the case with so very much of ED.

Better question: what do you think we do? There’s lots of groups that orchestrate it prett excellently on their own with how the game is right now.

Many of these people would rather complain about the way the game was designed, than take the time to actually play it enough to become competent at PvP.

The game was designed to allow a player to decide when, and if, they wanted to be involved with PvP. It's no different that some players don't choose to spent their game time Bulk Trading, than it is when players don't chose to PvP. Some people spend a considerable amount of time complaining about that fact.

I think given the lack of the game actively orchestrate PvP gameplay:-
- CMDRs fly around and randomly interdict
- Make the best the can of CGs which are not geared towards interesting PvP gameplay
- CMDRs arrange where to meet, how to meet etc... Generall for no reason/outcome?

Surely the game should be offering a reason/mechanism? eg: Anything from Powerplay offering PvP tasks, to the BGS dedicating itself to creating a couple of logical hot spots pushing CMDRs togethor via CR rewards and missions etc. Add to this more involved/interesting combat scenarios, to piracy actually having some depth/career mechanics, to CQC being integrated into the core game so holo-me fighter based PvP missions/tasks/CGs are available, surely PvP in the game can be made easier to access and more enjoyable?

Agree? Disagree?

I generally consider myself an enemy of the pilots federation, and normally oppose community goal events by murdering participants with wild abandon.

With the advent of Punishment & Punishment 3.0, I've been forced to get creative, and now do most of my murdering in small ships.

To get my murder fix in larger ships, I've turned to hunting imperial scum with Yuri Grom for now.

Targets pledged to Aisling Duval are quite plentiful in most active areas of space, and CMDRs pledged to the other imperial factions are not uncommon.

I have no idea why Mr. Grom is at war with the empire factions, but it suits my purpose.

And I get a special bonus to assist my ganking activities after four weeks, so it's well worth my time in the end.

Missions are for peasants. PvE is slavery.

War is freedom. PvP is love.

I pledged ALD for the hammers right after I started playing again, and I've noticed that the majority of players I see at CG's are also pledged the same. For my part, I was just module shopping; as soon as I get the hammers, I'm going to pledge to whoever puts the most enemies on my HUD. Destroying rival pledges with my stupidly over powered Gunship (5x PA's rocking 30% Premium ammo!) is my new favorite project:)

I'm a bit surprised that you can catch anyone with half an engine, in that brick?

It's best to catch them in the rocks, or outside a station. Though, a couple salvos right after the interdiction is usually enough to knock out shields and cripple them. The Vette & Cutter pilots are usually so convinced of their omnipotence that they stick around for those initial salvos instead of immediately running, and by the time they realize what's happening it's getting to be too late.

@Ziggy, yeah, I put the Chief up to work on the Gunship. It's ridiculously fun in a firefight. That slf is really entertaining, basically like a huge hardpoint chasing my opponent around and chatting with me at the same time.

What is this premium ammo nonsense????

Oh, you heard me! I feel like I've been the lone ranger in regards to ammo boosting at CG's, but that is coming to an end. The only space Bushido I'm going to be employing going forward is when having arranged duels with peers; power play enemies and assorted wanted scumbags are going to be the recipients of the "good stuff!"

I agree on the title, it's just a cheap jab at an easy target and I wrote in an earlier post that any activity is a minority in ED. You could just as easily ask 'why isn't exploration more popular?. Do you think that thread title would have gotten this many responses though?

No because the thread title is based on a false premise, as Zaphod just pointed out.
The answer to that question is self evident.

What experience do you have with player groups and the conflicts that arise? They provide a ton of PvP.

In fact, my group is having a dust up with another and it’s been pretty fantastic so far.

My issues with player groups are: peer pressure, hierarchy and group think. There are only a few groups of the many I've been partly involved with that did it right in my opinion. One of them being the Fuel Rats 2 years ago (no idea what state they're in now) (When I say many, I mean outside of Elite and in the past. By now I've learned to avoid :) )

And mind, this is beyond PvP. I've had a run in with an exploration group in this game when I wasn't even a part of it. And also mind, this is saying nothing about the quality of the groups, just a personal pet peeve I have.

Can you expand on this? I'm not following your logic. Maybe quote the specific bit from Zaphod too.

I was referring to the part I put in bold, but the entire post is spot on imo.

No. I'm just saying I've never needed spreadsheets to play Eve. I have some speadsheets for ED around here somewhere though.

I'd bet most ED PvPers do.

The title of the thread is wrong anyway.

PvP is popular in ED. There is never a shortage of (mostly) willing human enemies if you go looking for them.

For many, it's only a matter of time before they get into PvP.

The thread should have been titled "Why isn't PvP more popular in ED than it already is?".

The answer to that one is simple.

Engineers.

It's perceived as too steep of a bar to entry by some, and unbalanced or inherently unfair by others.

Many of these people would rather complain about the way the game was designed, than take the time to actually play it enough to become competent at PvP.

The false premise is "PVP is unpopular".

Do you remember the post where I 'admitted' to being away from the bubble for 18 months? Here's the last bit:

So PvP is a niche activity, but the OP's question could have been applied to any single activity. And because you can never be sure what weapons the next random opponent will have, even an optimal build can be beaten if you get lucky & happen to have just the right counter equipped. There is an element of risk there that makes the whole game a little more exciting, if you want it to be.

But most don't want it to be, and some just complain that it's all boring because they skipped ahead to the answers in the back of the book.

I recall that clearly.
I suggest you're all over the place in there.

It starts off ok, but then it all falls apart at the end.

You'll only "get lucky" against someone of similar noob-ness (edit: and that applies to loadouts too).
PVP is an objective testing ground.
