General / Off-Topic Financial Advice?

Same here, I haven't had to borrow money in decades thankfully. Not everyone is that lucky though, and the UK's economy seems to be going exactly the way we were warned it would so it'll probably get worse.

Yes, take debts to eat and have a roof is a drama.

But debts to have a nice car or the latest electronic technology, is completely inexcusable if the person falls into misfortune

Basically, I need a better job. Lol

I know I don't need a holiday, but we really want one. And we like to go interesting places, not just the usual yawn fest beach bumming holidays (we like to go where the usual English tourists don't...!). Lol
And it's our 10 year anniversary, so pretty big. :)

I've decided not to buy a new(er) car. There's no guarantee it won't be another lemon, so I'll probably just do overtime and fix mine. I do need a car though. It's a bummer I was planning to buy a bike to use for work in the summer, but now I gotta fix my car. Damn money sinks!
I also need my car to teach my girlfriend to drive. :D What could possibly go wrong...? :p

My phone will hopefully last, and I'll ask for a new one for Christmas or something, but it is slowly dying.
Locks up quite often, and reboots, and overheats, and it's battery is so bad, it's basically mains powered. :D
Still, its 5 years old, and that's good by mobile standards. :D

I don't really have relationship troubles anymore. Cleared all that up with good old honest conversation. All we argue about now is my lack of interest in DIY. Lol

A nice calm measured response; especially considering some of the replies above.

Money; it is the root of all evil. Unfortunately; we all needs roots.

There's an easy solution to the problem, but unfortunately you as well as many many many other won't like it.

Step One: Distinguish between wanting and needing.
Step Two: Using only cash, purchase what you need.
Step Three: IF you can't pay cash; Go back to step one.

With the phone, I've had decent experiences with the previous model to this one: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Smartpho...8&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=oukitel+u16+max&psc=1

It did everything that my old nexus 6p did (except die inexplicably when the battery hit 40ish %) & just as well. It was maybe a little bit weaker for gaming but that was it. It's also dual sim (or Sim + MicroSD) & definitely works in the USA on T-mobile, I've tested it.

It's not going to compete with current flagship models but it's certainly better than the budget poop that seems to be chucked through our normal stores, even with their branding.

don't you know someone who got a phone they don't need? in my friends "portfolio" there is always one who need the newest phone and practically gives away the "old" phone for peanuts.

Anyway good decision....

Everyone I know seems to be a member of that weird iCult, (including my girlfriend!), and insist on trying to sell me their old iSpoon. Usually complete with a cracked screen.
Why are all iPhone screens cracked btw? I've had my cheap plastic Nexus 5 for 5 years, and it's been to work (manual labor job) the entire time in a cheap £3 flip case.
And it's been dropped, sat on, kicked, attacked by my cat, overheated by charging it, playing music and using it as satnav in 30°c temp, behind glass, while in said case. And it's fine. Except the battery is a bit naff now. Lol
Even my girlfriends first iPhone 6S died in less than 1 year, and it cost twice as much as mine. :p
Luckily it was still hair under the manufacturers warranty.

Anyway. With the car stuff, I need that, for work. I could use public transport, but it's crap, and doesn't run after 10pm, which is when some of my shifts end.
Holiday I've already explained, it's important and something we've planned for, for about a year already. :)
Phone, I do want a new phone, but I know I don't need one, but it has to be powerful enough to work as a satnav for work, and other things without locking up. And I play games on it. Lol
I don't want a flagship model. I don't even like Samsung or Sony phones. But for now, I don't need one, but mine will stop working eventually.
I just like to spend a bit more on a phone that ideally will last much longer before feeling slow. Or run out of space.

Basically, I just need more monies!

And whoever said money doesn't buy happiness is lying. :p
Having no money is stressful and annoying, and often boring.
If I had money, I can buy the things that make me happy. :p

iphones are incredibly fragile. We lose about 30% of the office iphones every 24 months to floors, tables, things in people's bags.

Keeping phones for more than 2 years is a good thing. I was using an S3 with a custom ROM for about 4 years until it went in the washing machine (it still worked for 3 weeks until the screen went weird) It did exactly what my replacement new Samsung does do but without trying to hoover up so much personal data and send it back to Samsung. Phones these days improve by very small amounts really, switching to a SIM only plan after your term ends and hanging onto your phone is better for your pocket, the planet and you still get to do everything you would on a new phone too even if it doesn't look quite so shiny.

Start with some small business, sell and buy stuff is one thing, just like in ED buy cheap and sell with a profit.
A friend of mine, was good at repairing old junk cars, he got them on the cheap, got them "fixed" and sold them with a profit.

However you're probably a city boy :D and that really limit the options I know of, because you can't sell meat, egg, milk from the barn door.
Another friend of mine was making knifes at his fathers work shop, he also made a very good profit, and I hear that knifes are selling like hotcakes in London right now :D

of course my examples are more or less 30 years ago, so there you have it :)

but yeah money is a bless and a curse at the same time.

Money doesn't buy happiness.

Money buys Jetskis. Jetskis are happiness.

You need a pair of Jetskis.

Dude, when you don't have money you STOP BUYING CRAP.

You GO WITHOUT. You stop eating out. You put up with an old phone even if it is inconvenient. You stop playing video games and get a second or third job. You cancel every subscription hitting your card and stop buying entertainment. You cancel netflix. You cancel "guys night out to drink beer". You put up with an old mattress. You cancel vacation plans even if you have money down because... going is going to cost you EVEN MORE MONEY,

"We need a vacation, we need a break because #lifeishard." So you spend MORE money on yourself? Unbelievable.

Time to face the music. You can't keep deferring the problem like this.

Drunken sailor spending is over. Time to man-up.

You probably said this facetiously but that is just it. This points DIRECTLY to your problem.

The problem isn't your income. It is your spending.

Time to exercise discepline and self control. You need your spouse on-board with it too. Same goes there.

You are underwater and you are buying a new car? Unreal. You aren't getting it.

There's a solution to every problem if you just think outside the box. +1 virtual rep because I have to spread it around.

He won't be underwater if he gets a Jetski.
