Well, if you do, don't expect anybody to talk to you, since most of us us have no idea how to enter those chars as they are not on our keybords and require either charmap or some freaky ALT+0xxx keypresses.

I mean it gets difficult to distinguish between ÀÃÁÂÄÅ as you age and then your eyesight says NO :S Especially in the middle of a heated battle

I really believe (and hope) they will have some kind of tab completion for names when sending text messages. And when communicating with people in the heat of battle I personally would prefer VoIP.

This is 2013.... we have good solutions for this stuff. To have to write out the entire name of the commander for sending texts would be really horrible. ;)

Fair comment, yet - start the name with an off western letter, tab completion doesn't help, unless you tab through them all.
Voip would be nice (for some), but for example, I always play with ALL sound off and no headphones - so VOIP would be useless.

And the VOIP system doesn't have to be a part of the game either. The game will probably (and hopefully) be multitasking... so for those who want to use VOIP the can just do it through Skype or similar.

For tab completion they can at least have some intelligence for letters that look the same. I've done some implementations that when you search or tab through things that begins with letters such as A or O you also get all the results for Å, Ä and Ö when you reach the end of the ones that actually begins at A or O. In that way you would quickly reach a person with the name Pär when tabbing on "Pa" (e.g. Patric => Paul => Pär... Or if it begins on Ä then it would be something like: Andreas => Andy => Äbbe => Ärland)

Erm, wouldn't it be a nice idea to modify the form a bit so people can enter a first choice and second/backup choice for their commander names, that way FD can still implement first pledged first served selection even when people's name choices are duplicated, and only go to first come first served if both choices are duplicates.....

the most popular submissions so far:

Shepard (currently most popular!)
Fox
Malcolm Reynolds
Han Solo
Ace Rimmer
Picard
Starbuck
Adama
Skywalker
The Doctor
Kirk
Biggles
Maverick
Bond
Most one-syllable names and surnames (Smith, Jones, Bob & Dave particularly)
Most Colours (White & Black particularly)

If you have any of these names you may want to consider changing it before Monday. Someone has to get them though, so maybe you fancy your chances!

Bangs head of keyboard!

WHY! thud! Why! Thud! Why! Thud! . . .

Lets hope these people didn't actually spend any time thinking about these names because if they did I fear for the user input we will have!

I suppose if they were to apply a filter to lock names so there could only be one flavour of each say for example, Päul would lock out Paul etc etc, that would save major confusion I think, otherwise you could have 6 or 7 (or more) people with the same name, just using different a's (and so on).

I don't think it's fair if you choose the name (and get it) Bob that somebody else could have Bŏb, and somebody else Bõb and rinse repeat until all variants are exhausted. It defeats the purpose of paying for a unique name I think.

I have no problem with accented letters being used in names where they should be, it's the misuse in names where they shouldn't

Probably best to keep special characters out of it just to avoid any confusion.

Even recently an online game I play has changed its planet naming policy to exclude such characters...

Hey, the good thing about meeting Cmdr Han solo or one of his above listed friends is you can take your frustration about his choice of name out on them with a military laser and a missile or two.

Me too.
Also Fox, I didn't get that either.

The one thing that came to mid for me was

First pledged first served name approvals are taking place NOW.

:)
Well I guess that means my name ("Chuck Schwammerl") is locked in, because I cannot change it, and no one else will have been daft enought to get there before me. Buckets full of extra Kudos to anyone who gets the second name reference without having to google it.

It's locked in that you can't change it, but that's because everyone is now locked until FD have been through the entire list.... It's not "locked in" until those little cogs next to the name turn into a green tick (or something similar).

Ah, how tense... I don't envy whoever has to go through all these submissions - an immensely gruelling task! Truly a heroic deed by whatever wonderful soul is doing it!

(Does sucking up help? No? Ah well...)

Almost the same thing though for strange and unusual names as Annu has.

I'm keeching it as mine is unusual but I reckon a slim chance someone else picked it - Demeisen. If you read Iain Banks Culture novels you'll prob know who this is :)
