Disappointed

It'll be well worth it :)

I'm actually hoping they will be adding a higher resolution for those with top end machines.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
There are some helpful posts and offers for assistance here. Thank you for keeping it civil and on topic in addressing OP's concerns.

Well, I never buy PCs or upgrades just to play games. It's just that the PC that I'm using at the moment is capable of playing Elite.

Frontier are optimising the game all the time. I'm guessing that the final version will be optimised to perfection to play on even the most modest quad-core PC. That will benefit the game in the longrun, as the average PC user, with their "off the shelf" PC shouldn't have much problem playing the game.

Whereas Star Citizen....:p

I certainly would not say the game is worth spending a lot of money on a new computer for it alone, no game is worth that. But there is no denying the game is very good.

Unfortunately with computer gaming you have to upgrade something every few months or it will cost you big time in the long run. I generally buy something for my computer every 5-6 months or so to try to keep it current but that still doesnt prevent the need for a major upgrade (motherboard/chip/RAM) every 3-4 years. But if you can do it yourself you can save a fortune. I upgraded my computer recently to a 6 core AMD 64bit computer with 12Gb RAM that can do 3d rendering (so is pretty fast) for less than £400.

If you know someone who loves messing about with computers it can be well worth asking them to make one up for you rather than buying a complete new one. Especially when you can easily add things like better keyboard/mouse, bigger screen, better graphics card, more RAM etc gradually afterwards. The main thing is to get a decent motherboard, chip, power unit, case and cooling to allow for reasonable futureproofing. And that can be done pretty cheaply if you get someone to do it for you along with very basic stuff/reusing stuff for all the rest temporarily.

I created this forum account just for this thread.

I played the original Elite back when it first came out for the Spectrum 48 back in the 80's. It was the greatest game of my youth and I miss it.

I was excited when I heard that it was being released and although I couldn't take part in the kickstarter (finished before I had heard) I was looking forward to player.

Sadly, my machine misses, but not by much, the minimum recs.

This is the cause of my disappointment. Back in the day, the devs managed to squeeze everything they wanted to do into less than 48k of memory. A truly staggering achievement that led to incredible inclusivity and was a technical masterpiece.

Alas, I only wish the modern devs had the same ability to stretch the boundaries of what is possible and have gone for the 'MOAH POWAH!" route.

Now, I'm not expecting sympathy, but instead of paying 50 pounds (FIFTY!) for the game, I'm going to have to spend a couple of hundred on updating/replacing my system and then buy the game.

Such is life.

Like you I did enjoy ELITE but on an C64 + 5.25 Floppy DISK, this machine cost me and my brother 1200 Deutsch Mark, this was a small fortune at that time, because the C64 was a top notch PC then.....
With this in mind I think we have a better situation now! You need "only" a midrange new PC to run ED on FHD.....

And yes I did also buy a new PC only for this game because my old one was really old, thats life!

I have a mid priced PC that's 2 or 3 years old and runs the game beautifully. It cost proportionally far less than the Amiga that struggled to run FE2 20 years ago.

I update every 4-5yrs and get the best I can at the time. This rig has another 4yrs in it, maybe more. Such is PC gaming, but worth every penny compared to consoles.

If you don't have a PC that can even meet the modest min hardware requirements of ED, you don't have a PC that can play any AAA graphically appealing game released in the last 4 years.

Hence, you don't own a gaming PC in today's standard. Don't blame FD if you are simply too cheap to buy one.

I do major upgrades every 3 or 4 years and minor ones like better graphics cards every 18-24 months.

My current rig easily copes with the most demanding games on ultra settings so barring cpu meltdown (no I don't over clock though I do have a turbo that changes the 3.4 ghz to 3.9 ghz though never used it) I shouldnt need to upgrade for several years except maybe a better graphics card. I only paid 500 odd quid for this computer and I bet you could make your own for around 250-300 that would be easily capable of running E: D :)

My computer is below the official minimum spec, and the game plays just fine (with all the graphics settings down to Low). Yours might be ok too!

I feel your pain, I had to upgrade to play. My existing pc was starting to show signs of its age so I took the plunge. Best investment I ever made and my lad is well impressed with the build too. My bank account wasn't impressed but hey this is second time in a lifetime opportunity to play Elite. (I wasn't able to play two of them due to circumstances)

Post your specs. The game will be optimised more on release and that may allow you enter the game, with lowest settings of course. Don't give up.

If you post your specs, an experienced user may be able to guide you. Never know.

CPU

You Have: AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 245 Processor

CPU Speed

You Have: 2.9 GHz

RAM

You Have: 3.1 GB

OS

You Have: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 32-bit

Video Card

You Have: GeForce 9600 GT

Features: Minimum attributes of your Video Card
You Have
Pixel Shader version 4.0
Vertex Shader version 4.0
Dedicated Video RAM 512 MB
Sound Card SOUND CARD
Minimum: Yes
You Have: High Definition Audio Device

You will need to replace CPU which means new motherboard and new RAM. You need to replace graphics too. Your PC is indeed very old.

Actually, I have a laptop which has much better specs, (doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, but does have 8gig of memory), which I actually forgot about (for I am old). It may well work on that, although I find playing on laptops problematic, but I could live with that.

I haven't bought the game yet, but I will....

Also, thanks for your kindness. I am grumpy and I expected it back. Nice community.

If you can post your laptop specs. Ppl will tell You if it can run Elite and save money if it cant. You may end up buying game for 50 quid and be unable to run it on both, desktop and laptop.

It's somewhere else in the house so I'll post tomorrow, but I remember it is quad core and does have 8 gig, so it's mostly there, I think.

If it exceeds these recommended settings... your good to go.

Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System RAM (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram
Nvidia GTX 260
ATI 4870HD
Internet connection

Fingers crossed for you Anopheles :)
