Modes Why do you want me in Open?

Why open? Elite is a wasteland devoid of sentience. I play open but rarely fight. I love a good tangle and fly with crimes off but I would rather help a weaker player than kill them. Killing NPCs is dumb. They just respawn and laugh at my efforts. Trading trinkets is dull. Missions rarely make sense and frequently get bugged. Players are the only thing that bring dynamic interaction. Otherwise the game is just fancy Solitaire.

Let's hear it folks - there's a full court press, all guns blazing forum meta-war going on with the very foundations of the game at stake ;)

So combat's not especially my thing - I'll do it when it comes but I don't get my kicks at CZs or Res Sites.
I'll maybe have a brief dedicated combat session once in a while but I'll soon move on again.
Currently at 22% Master.

My builds are definitely not combat optimized, so I'll offer little counter-threat to anyone who interdicts me.
However, I'm also not an OCD min-maxer trying to eke out every Cr/hr, so I rarely fly unshielded (my Mining FDS is the exception).
I've also been around long enough so I know how to get away.
Your chances of actually blowing me up are slim.

What exactly are you missing out on by not having me in your instance?

target practise for the knuckle draggers, nothing more

Because the griefers are running out of targets, so they complain a lot. The squeaky wheel gets greased.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no... This is all about 'fixing' PP (wink, wink), not creating targets for people. You've got it entirely backwards. The only reason PP isn't currently a mecca for amazing PvP with a purpose is because people who aren't interested in it aren't doing it.

I'm not a griefer.
I just like to have people around and all the risks that that entails.
You really can't understand that?

If you don't want to play in open that's fine. Just don't try to paint it as an arena where everybody gets killed the minute they log in. It's kinda childish.

If everyone played the in open, it would finally feel like a living, breathing galaxy... right now, with the community dispatched between the modes, it feels dead and empty unless you go to a CG or go visit an engineer...

I'd invite you to wing up, we'd load up with whatever the hauling CG wanted, then I'd tell you jokes as we annoyed the hell out of PvPers flying in supposed God builds whilst easily getting to the CG station.

We could do it in Haulers and whoever didn't make it would have to down a shot, (for example)

We'd dream up expletive free but highly sarcastic, witty and biting insults we would send to any attempted interdictions.

Finally I'd probably crack open a couple of beers (and if you are especially entertaining the whiskey) and then you could have a good laugh as I fail to remember to request docking and boost into a station to be insta-killed.

I like your style, I'd wing* up with you. Next CG in a Hauler either as traders or pirates seems like a good way to get through a couple of bottles of red.

*Disclaimer: I don't actually know how to 'wing up' or how to pirate or how to fight but I can headbutt the back wall of a station with ease. Memory of a Goldfish, 'what's this button do?' Oh right, boost. 'What's this button do?' Oh right...

I don't really care what you do but I think the experience of open is superior whether you want to do combat or not.
I think *you're* missing out.

We're pages from the same book, my grubby-bearded compatriot. Open imo could actually stand to be a bit more full of unexpected dangers. But you can't convince someone out of their fears and prejudices. Which are silly to even have because we're pretending to be spacemen in the future. ._____.

There is a unreasoning and actual hatred around here sometimes for people who shoot at other people with their pretend spaceships, in a game that flatly allows shooting at other people. I'm not making it up when I recall more than a single thread calling for IRL fatal violence against pretend criminals. Bludgeoning people to death should ONLY happen in video games afaic; that's not a suitable or rational reaction for having to pull some extra missions to top up your rebuy monies.

To OP: Do what you want. Open has risks. They are not as bad as people say, except sometimes when they are. But if you don't want to be there, IDW you to be there either because Pretend Spaceman is supposed to be fun and it doesn't seem like my ideas would always gel with yours. That fun is very broadly defined, and varies even with the same player depending on the game. I would never gank someone here in a million years, just wouldn't; but as I posted in another thread, I used to play a game where I had a saint, a noble monster and a serial killer alt. They were all great fun in their own way and none of them exploited any rules.

Often times, it doesn't matter. Space is quite large. Around interesting PoIs, more CMDRs generally adds to the feeling of life of the universe. More people to chat with, work together with, protect, etc. I really enjoy teaming up with less-combat-capable CMDRs and trying to keep them alive and protected in bounty farming CGs. Healing lasers, repair drones, drawing aggro, etc.

If you're doing something I don't want to happen (support an opposing power, undermine a specific faction, support a CG I don't want to succeed / support the "wrong" side in a competive CG), you being in open allows me to directly observe and oppose your actions. Without direct oposition, everything turns into a grind race (which I personally find less entertaining). Imagine a soccer game: both teams are trying to score goals, but they're also actively trying to stop the other side from scoring. Now imagine if you moved both teams to their own field, and had them play against each other: the game turns into simply seeing who can kick the ball into the goal the fastest, and the most times in a give time period.

What makes you believe that all those who currently avoid Open are suddenly coming in droves if they have no other choice? Imagine the other way around and Open would be closed, no more PvP at all and everyone would have to play in Solo. How many PvPer do you think would stay?
That's not quite the same thing. PvP is an activity made possible by open and private group. If people are playing for that activity, removing that activity is fairly likely to remove their interest. As far as I can think of, there's no activity that's exclusively made possible by solo mode (with the exception of high-res screenshots, from what I understand).

I enjoy the tension of seeing a hollow square. I enjoy that they occasionally attack me. I enjoy that they occasionally attack me in a group so that my tactics have to adapt. I prefer when they're friendly but without the risk of the contrary it's almost meaningless.
Sometimes I like to see how my RP handicapped (cabin to sleep in, cargo that represents lifestyle etc.) ships do against someone chasing me down.
I wish there were more like-minded players. Who doesn't?
