If you want players to play in Open Play you need to consider this.

Open play is full of toxic players. Griefers, trolls and the current system encourages this. If you want a more healthy PvP and community you need to address these players.
1) Rebuy is absurdly expensive. Most players avoiding open play don't want to blow a ton of their wallet on rebuying their ship over a griefer looking for lulz. Drop the price of this to at most 1% of the total cost of the ship. This is an MMO, after all, and death has never been this punishing in any game. Or keep it the same but drop the PvP cost to 0 like in other MMOs.

2) Cargo/bounties/exploration loss is absurd. I know this game is supposed to be part-sim, but this compounds the reason why people won't play in Open. The fear of trolls wanting to pop them and not only wipe out the millions of credits they put into the cargo, but also the hours of work they put in earning those credits to buy the cargo AND the rebuy of the ship. If you want to have some of the cargo drop as a "reward" to pirates, then so be it. But 100% loss AND ship cost means no one wants to deal with that risk. If you want to do a % of cargo dropped that would also be fine. Just not 100%.

*3A) Do something about the griefers and trolls. I mentioned this before, with some support, but have the Pilots Federation go after people with a notoriety above a certain number. And not just 1-2 ships, I'm talking a squad of 4 properly kitted out and even (if it gets high enough) a capital ship. A death by this means would only drop 1 rank of notoriety each time until they're back under a certain level.
or
*3B) Increase the notoriety gain against players and have all damage increase against them based on their notoriety. Then let it decay normally. (An indicator of how high their penalty is would also be nice)

*Obviously notoriety would not increase in combat zones, unless you attack an allied ship.

No, it's not 'full of toxic players'.

1) Given the 'lore' around it, rebuy is stupidly cheap.

2) Data loss doesn't make much sense given materials/data I'll grant. Bounty claims the same or PP salary. Cargo loss - yea, if your ship blows up it makes perfect sense your cargo does too.

3) C&P handles this. Everyone against pvp claimed it would be perfect despite folks trying to point out it wouldn't. FDev can adjust as they see fit. 3B is just a silly idea. Locking out of stations/services is much more fitting than changing game mechanics actions that might have perfectly valid RP or in-game reasons (or not) and FDev says is a perfectly legit way to play the game.

How about a GTAV Online style 'passive mode'. This would enable players to see each other and work together in wings and on missions without being able to kill or be killed by other players?

4 Billion stars....avoiding players could not be any easier. Tip CG system and the area around it, is the only place in the game thats remotely dangerous. I'm amazed all this time and people still can't find better things to moan about.

Yeah, because not being able to damage ships at all is a great solution to a problem with a game that's supposed to be as close to reality as possible.

Incorrect, death has been this punishing, and in fact, has been MORE punishing, in many games.

Some games drop ALL your gear when you die- in EVE, over half your stuff evaporates, the hull is gone, and people probably take the rest.

But you're on the right track- low death penalty encourages conflict. Though, NO death penalty or reward makes fighting meaningless.

Agreed on all counts on this, this is why I play in private only, its a a pity I really like to play in open but way to many nobs out there.

Crime and Punishment? Sure, unless you're in a place like Socho where it's an anarchy. They can kill you right outside the station and so long as they don't hit the station, they're good to go. And if they are using smart rounds, then it's assured they won't hit the station. They kill you, get to see a lovely light and you're stuck with a several thousand to several million credit re-buy and it costs them nothing except a bit of ammo which is stupidly cheap. Make perfect sense:rolleyes:

Lore is moot. This is essentially an MMO and for an MMO the rebuy is insane for when you are able to afford the weapons. And yes open is INFESTED with toxic players. INFESTED.

2) Data loss doesn't make much sense given materials/data I'll grant. Bounty claims the same or PP salary. Cargo loss - yea, if your ship blows up it makes perfect sense your cargo does too.
Never have I seen this in a good MMO that you drop your entire inventory. The insanely high cost of the ship PLUS the inventory is way too high.

Last event we had trolls who racked up over 2 million credits in bounties killing people who wanted to contribute to the community goal. I saw this in the crime report. C&P doesn't go far enough.

Name me the MMO this exists in.
Some games drop ALL your gear when you die- in EVE, over half your stuff evaporates, the hull is gone, and people probably take the rest.
Just because a game has that mechanic doesn't mean it's a good mechanic. Like the ridiculous fast item degradation in older Bethesda games or hell D&D Online.
But you're on the right track- low death penalty encourages conflict. Though, NO death penalty or reward makes fighting meaningless.
Reward would be a clone of some of the cargo dropping, plus mats. If the person is wanted then you'd get their bounties.

Well, that's the point of anarchy systems. But I see the point that it discourages people from going open in those places.

Yep. It makes perfect sense for driving people into solo or away from the game altogether.

Which is what needs to be fixed. They can increase the size of the carrot all they want, but if the path to said carrot is over shards of glass and hot coals only the masochists will go near it.

I’m not sure.

Most people who don’t already play in open aren’t suddenly going to start playing there because of a few changes.

Open is what it is. There’s plenty of videos and advice to be able to survive should the worst happen.

If you find rebuys too expensive then you’d probs find switching down to a cheaper ship more beneficial - and developing more evasive/escape skills.

If you can survive through improving your own skills then it becomes a matter of practice rather than the mechanics needing to change.

The smart rounds at a station in an Anarchy is a new one to me, i’ll be honest.

For that, i’m not sure of the DPS but considering a fast indirect approach (and maybe surface hugging the station from an unusual direction) might give a small enough window for the attacker to not get your shields down?

What was your build, was it a T9 as mentioned in the other thread?

T-9 with a class 6A shield engineered a bit. Like 450 or so MJ. I learned not to deploy landing gear until inside the station so I can boost if needed to get in quicker. But I won't do CG's in open anymore. They run me off of that. Not just this one, but other CG's as well.

No worries. The supplies are going to get through save a closed market in which case I'll drop the CG like a hot rock.

I wish i would play the same open as all those people moaning.
I've build a PvP hunter to take down resistant targets like the Cutter with 100mil bounty i've spotted in Founders.
Since i've built this ship i'm flying around and around and around.......and don't find ANY combat willing cmdr at all :( even in Socho yesterday around 18:00 ingame there was nobody around who kills others for lulz. I wish i could finally try that amazing ship i've made :(

"Infested"...."full of griefers"..."toxic".....i'm really in a different open i believe

Open is not as bad as you think.
I doubt that. Getting griefed outside of Dahan on my first day of playing before a friend set up a server was my initial experience. Every other time I've been on open I've been attacked by toxic garbage people.

Or, they can actually address the toxic trash that infests the game so people will be more inclined to play in open and join jn cgs.

Thats ridiculous. Every ship rebuy is too expensive for the point in game when you can afford the ship. If they dropped the penalty then they could feel better about making npcs better at combat.

Could you share what happened and whether you think any actions you could have taken would have prevented it? As I say, it's new to me but I'd like to develop a counter. I don't suppose you videod it?

Well, we could be a long time waiting as they don't seem in any rush to prevent terrorist CMDRs doing what they do. I'm sorry you had such a negative experience so early, and I'm glad you kept playing. There are ways to counter most things that are thrown at you - it's up to you of course if you choose to engage with that in Open as it is at the moment.

I've got to disagree with the statement about rebuys - the general advice is to have at least 3 times the rebuy cost when you buy a ship to be safe - though that might be a bit extreme (some might say 5 or six, lol) if you choose to fly without reserves, then that's on you as you think that risk is worth it.
