Sure. How about this vid, it shows the mining in 3.2. It works and is somewhat skill-based (with difficulty dependent on the material being mined). Maybe not revolutionary, but it is the inclusion of an actual gameplay mechanic that generally speaking works. To compare, it seems to be a small step up from the basic mining mechanic in NMS/ED, though with less modules involved compared with the more comprehensive ED system. The SC implementation does seem a few steps below the proposed new mining system of ED coming Q4. All in all not super exciting, not super terrible: a nice step forward.

Unfortunately, this vid also shows that the flight model is still very weird. When he starts moving around the rock the acceleration/deceleration is still very much reminiscent of 'no clip mode', without any indication there is any kind of mass/gravity influencing the flight model. It doesnt really compare with flying a massive T9 in a ring, which to me is somewhat essential to get that 'space mining' vibe. As someone else posted elsewhere, a design choice seems to be that all attention is on the rock itself; there isnt really much chance of anything happening. SC needs the equivalent of mining in a RES, where there are external threat to take account of. It would also make the crew aspect of mining more relevant because the current SC system is perfectly doable solo.

Why do you have to mine rocks on the surface of a planet by hovering a ship over them? They've made all those ships, but not a mining vehicle? Having the ui text the same colour as the planet doesn't help. The process itself looks fine.

From the comments of the video you posted:

  • Imagine in a few decades they will still be making these videos and be really old with grey hair and wearing dressing gowns and walking with a stick
  • as Chris has added a few hundred more mechanics (like real time simulated toenail wear and tear and growth) to the game.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

This reminds me of Stardust...

It would be fun if you backed in 2012 and your avatar was forced to age until the game came out...

Has this thing not crashed and burned yet?

Been a long time since I've even thought about SC, never mind read anything about it. I got my money back out of the project many moons ago and thought it would have collapsed in on itself by now.

So, what's new?

Refunds have stopped since January, there are quarterly releases with a roadmap, though things are constantly moved out of it, the last release was there on time (barely), broken and very light on features, but still. The next release is on the test server, so it should be there on time. Main features it was supposed to contain were first iterations of salvage, repair and mining mechanics as well as FPS AI, but only mining remained.

Mining ("0 tier iteration") is limited to ED-like deposits on planetary surfaces, mined by 155$ mining ship. Mining looks like that: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6ldvcq and requires you to hold the button to use a mining laser and make sure neither of four values exceed the limit (think ED's mining but if your mining laser overheats you lose the deposit and/or ship).

The other smaller features are the 8-person group system, the ability to link the quantum drives (go-really-really-fast doodads) to fly in formation and allocate power to subsystems.

Edit: Compared to 2.0 you get moon landings, few ground vehicles and more than few new ships, a little bit of persistence, Star Marine on two maps, no more than 30-40 FPS unless you play on a fresh server and few smaller things.

Multiplayer instances maximum of 8! <lulzbucket explodes>

What are you talking about? The party/grouping system is limited to 8, not how many players that are around you.

Kinda like Elite's party system is limited to 4, but you can have more than 4 people in an instance.

It's great that they didn't release a rushed game in 2014 as planned and held back to take all the time they need and raised all the extra money to put out this 2018 iteration of "0 tier" (aim at rock - hold down fire) mining and I for one can't wait for the 2022 update. It really shows how taking as much time as possible ensures fully feature rich game-play which will save PC gaming.

It doesn't matter one iota what I am talking about.

The only thing that matters is what CIG devs are talking about, and still failing to deliver :D

I would hope they at least stay away from Elite level of stupidity with contraband. I mean, at most scanners copy a ship manifest and for some reason smuggled goods are listed there or the sensors are pure magic that can see through a metal crate and identify the content in some bizarre manner.

Not really that bizarre, sub millimeter radar in theory could do this, various prototypes are around at the moment.

Yup, although that does have interesting implications for ships that have a crew of more than 8....
