Unidentified signal sources are almost always empty for me.

Is it normal.

Once I found some grain canisters.

I got bored of doing the fish run from Aulin, to Ibootis, so I decided to try to find some of those big ship combat scenes that I see on youtube.

I started supercruising around the Aulin station and trying to rendezvous with the unidentified signal sources. I managed to get what I expect to be close. I've been able to come out of super cruise at stations within 10km. Once I came out of supercruise and immediately bumped into the station.

How do I find these action scenes? Or should I just start attacking players?

Its random generated with about I dont know 8 or so different outcomes.

They can also bring up nothing if you are unlucky.

What you can do is just sit at the same one, supercruise for a second then disengage, and repeat.

The big battles are at distress signals or warzones. I'm not sure, I havent tried that post update.

The big youtube fights are not signal sources. Head to Eranin 2 for example and get close - closer than 1 ls. You will see a high intensity site and a federation distress call; thats' what you've seen. If a new site is created when you jump in, you need to give it a minute before the other ships jump in. These sites can be found here and there, but you need to get real close to a planet before you can see if there's anything there of interest.

Unknown Signal Sites can contain a bunch of things. Very rarely they will indeed be empty. Sometimes you find cargo. Usually though (if you wait a minute) you get jumped by pirates, security forces or stumble across a cargo ship or even a fight between NPCs.

Also, you mentioned you disengaged SC often around 10km out from the station. If you practice this on USS you probably won't trip the instance. You need to disengage when both the Speed and Distance markers in your left HUD are in the blue and the message above the radar "SAFE TO DISENGAGE" comes up. Then you should only have to wait a minute at most (though lag in Open may delay this) before either ships appear or cargo.

i never saw there nothing, never. and i have visited those many hundred times.

so i don't know what to suggest, there always is something, just most of the times not what i want to see there :)

Agreed - as long as when you exit SC it states "destination locked" you appear in the USS and within 30s the "event" starts. Never had issues myself and I am on a poor internet connection in open play :)

Always empty for me too. Well found for 4 cannisters of something worthless once, but thats got to be out of 40/50 sites. Putting it down to being BETA.
To be honest I´ve stopped playing. Keep coming out of supercruise inside the station, and dieing. 4 times on the bounce was the final straw. This is also due to it being BETA, but it shows I´m unlikely to be missing the unknown signal sources.
Sure it´ll get fixed soon

That's very odd. I'm very tempted to say that you are doing something wrong but that fact that you say you exited supercruise inside the station may suggest otherwise (at least in part).

Have you submitted a ticket? What Beta version was this in?

That you have visited 40 or 50 USS and only encountered 1 event seems to be extraordinary. Have you locked on the target destination, disengaging supercruise at the correct moment and stayed in the vicinity for about 30 seconds?

I would tentatively suggest that while there might be a bug (exiting supercruise inside the station) you might be doing something wrong. Perhaps you aren't exiting SC in the USS.

You also have to remember you have to TARGET those signals. I was doing the same thing, trying to drop out of super cruise in the vicinity and finding nothing. Face the signal and hit your target forward button then you can drop out below 1000km when you get the safe HUD warning.

I've never found empty space doing it this way.

I´ll give it another go, but I´m sure I´m doing it right. Target lock, and disengage when says safe.
My problem is I try and get as close as poss, before disengaging. This is the problem with the sations. The thing it´s really hard habit to stop :)

I used to be like that and then a few crashes into stations when dropping out of frame shift cured me;)

I've been tracking down these USSs and they come in a variety of forms. There are the ones that just contain basic cannisters of mineral oil or grain. I usually use them as target practice, but there are others.

One was a group of federal eagles attacking a transport. If you get close enough to it, the transport will attack you (along with it's sidewinder escort). If you get the final shot on it you should get about 850 credits for destroying it.

Others tend to be more frustrating. I've been in one a few times where there was a federal eagle in battle with a cobra. You can't do anything there as neither ship shoots at you, so you can't retaliate unless you want a wanted tag on yourself (I hope FD sorts that problem out soon enough, it has been mentioned before) Usually that fight ends with the cobra destroying the eagle, or the eagle running away before the cobra jumps out itself.

Another one is where you encounter a transport (like a hauler) and you get the choice of attacking it in pirate fashion, but I never bothered with it (certainly not in sidewinder!)

The trick is not one of timing - as long as safe exit within 1KM of the USS you'll end up right in the middle of it. So there's no benefit to waiting until the last minute.

I'll tell you what your real problem is, though. (I know because I posted literally the exact same question/thread a week ago). You have to WAIT patiently for the NPCs to spawn. Sometimes they spawn close-to-instantly, but often the spawn AFTER your frameshift has cooled down. And if you're impatient like me, once the frameshift is online you SC out of there. Don't do that - WAIT instead. Suddenly empty USSs will come to life in 80-90% of cases - I guarantee it!

You havent been targeting the USS. Thats why they come up empty ALL the time. You have to target em in order for there to be something there.

Do this:
  • TARGET the USS that has caught your fancy.
  • Approach to within 1000 KM (you see the blue 'safe to disengage message'). DON'T OVERSHOOT.
  • Make sure you have slowed down to a safe velocity (in the 'blue zone' in the left UI panel).
  • Press whatever button takes you out of supercruise/frame shift drive.
  • WAIT for up to 30 seconds.
Follow the above and you will experience < 1 in 20 empty USS scenarios.

Yep, it sounds like you're waiting till your distance reads less than 20 km which is way too late to disengage safely. Both your Speed and Distance indicators in your left panel need to be blue for you to 'lock' on to your destination properly. Not so bad if you miss at the station (other than appearing in the superstructure), but any other event will not occur if you haven't 'locked' on. Good luck.

I always wait till 20 until I hit safe engage. One or twice I have come out in the station. Of those two times, I lost my ship once. The second time I was in between the layers thats form the bulkheads of the station, so I just logges out quick and then back in again and I was at a safe distance outside. Dont worry too much about being "too near". Just always make sure your throttle is at zero as you drop out. Im in the habit of it now I been doing it so long.
