General / Off-Topic Elon Musk Vile Tweet

Meanwhile: Several people were rescued but the 'news' media decided this was getting a bit boring so decided to jump on some connected issue and blow it up out of all proportion.
Meh.

Well, nothing on the story is particularly phenomenal. Dozens of people live and die all day, all days.

Social media seems to breed a road rage like effect. Some people just revert to angry 12 year olds.

It also gives all the egomaniacs the perfect platform to go nuts.

Still, it’s entertaining to watch.

Yes - I used to think it was just the annonymity but it seems some people just can't help themselves even when they're identifiable - it's never a good look.

I think people take offense too easily, it's just bants, that's basically what social media entails.

well yes and no, I can take almost everything, however you call me a pedo and you will eat glock!!

I think Musk is full of himself, he need to tone it down a bit.

Oh yes, we must execute people for wrong think. I agree that what Musk said, in an unprovoked manner was bad (which is arguable in this situation), but that doesn't justify being sued nor does it justify people like you threatening to shoot someone lol, fists I can understand.

We all have said stupid things during our life.

Perhaps Elon Musk simply is a bit burned out and stressed. It won't be easy to run a company that is constantly in the limelight and they have had some trouble with deadly accidents. Stuff like that could have pushed him over the edge. Perhaps he simply should take a vacation and sort things out for himself.

It is such a waste of time and energy to get all worked up over what some guy, who runs a company somewhere on some planet, has said to some guy in some other country on some planet, via the holy twitter channels.

I have difficulty coming up with something that is more trivial.

Talking of which, shooting people for saying mean things may be a slight overreaction.

Well he didn't actually write "I'll shoot you with a Glock handgun", just "you will eat glock". Have you ever tried to chew or swallow small firearms? That's some rather unpleasant stuff.

:p

an armed society is a polite society, but now we are moving into the realm of politics :D

I never perceived for example the armed US society to be more polite than the unarmed British, Dutch, Belgian, or German societies.
It is however 25 times morel likely to get shot in the polite armed US society than in a polite unarmed europe society according to the WHO.

Having said that... I am fascinated by the technology of guns (although I do not own one) and enjoy 'killing' thousands of digital opponents in shooters.

You should compare cities within the US for a better perspective.

The US in general hasn't been an armed society in a very long time, if ever. Most people do not own firearms and most of those that do don't carry them on a daily basis.

Sure there are enough out there, that, depending on location, no one would be surprised to see someone carrying, but it's not remotely ubiquitous.

25 times more than infinitesimally small is still a couple orders of magnitude below my threshold for concern. The hysteria over gun violence is almost as overblown as the hysteria over terrorism.

Meanwhile, in the real world, I'm worried about things that might actually harm me, like people texting while driving, erosion of my right to privacy and freedom of expression, being victimized by monopolistic corporations, antibiotic resistance, or pollution.

Yes, even in the US, fists and feet kill more people than the much maligned "assault rifles" do, it's around twice as many as "all" rifles in any given year.

Also, gun violence is very localized and certain populations are highly over-represented.
Most of it is gang/drug related.

54% of counties (with 11% of the population) have no murders. 69% of counties have no more than one murder, and about 20% of the population. These counties account for only 4% of all murders in the country.

The worst 1% of counties have 19% of the population and 37% of the murders. The worst 5% of counties contain 47% of the population and account for 68% of murders. As shown in figure 2, over half of murders occurred in only 2% of counties.
