Collecting samples

Hey, I am roaming around in my DBX looking for thargoids to sample with my research limpet.
No reason: I just think they'd look good mounted on my wall.

Where's the best place to find Cyclops, Basilisk, Medusas? Preferably ones that are busy doing something else.

I understand there are some megaships that are good spots?

Often megaships in any system under attack. Not sure which those are this week. The hamster will know.

... The hamster will know.

The Hamster knows all ;)

Yes, the attacked mega-ships spawn random interceptors, just keep waking in and out to get what you need.

a second recommendation is any of the more recent attacked surface sites (and bug squasher crash) as they also spawn Interceptors!

Would you been keen on doing the current Ram Tah Mission? the acquisition of samples was perhaps the most irritating part for me with this. it would provide a purpose for the otherwise useless commodities! :)

This weeks targets Kamadhenu (scouts) and CW Ursae Majoris (interecptors + scouts) 40Ly from Sol. Wrecked Megaships in both, and Aegis ship.

So far I've tried sampling four times and died every time. Two were stupidity. The others the tharg just turned on me even when in silent.

Yes! Got a cyclops sample finally. Electra 6 works well. The Hogan class megaship.. sometimes rescue vessels will spawn, sometimes thargs. Just relog until you get what you want.

Yes, I'm doing that mission. I wanted a challenge. I got one :)
I was joking when I said I just wanted to mount them on the wall.

If you have these items please, I'll grab them. Anything other than repeated dying.

If you have these items I would love to grab them. In-game name is the same.

There is a trick to it my friend :)

Enter silent running after scan, then deploy limpet and keep poping heatsinks to maintain heat, do not get any closer than 1km (2 is safe) until sample is collected, if it decides to chase and scan the collected sample, bail and try again. that way the thing won't pummel you shields down.

I used a dinky old Hauler for cannon fodder, then rush back to main base where I swap out for my main ship... I highly recommended you do one sample at a time for the mission.. taking longer safer is better than the opposite ;)

I'm finally getting around to the ram tah mission myself, and I am having a lot of trouble getting all 3 samples. I'm running a low heat DBX (but not below 20%) when I drop into a SS I'm usually scanned, even when popping silent running as soon as the controls are responsive. I have avoided being scanned a few times with lateral thrusters and pitching tightly around the thargoid while in silent running, but only a very few times. Getting the first sample isn't the problem, it's getting the 2nd since once I am carrying a tissue sample if i get scanned of course I'm attacked, and running hasn't worked too well in the dbx with efficient d thrusters and no shields up. Is there a trick to this or do you need to find a SS with all 3 types in it at once? Gone through about 10 rebuys and would really appreciate any tips including just engineering the dbx below 20% heat if that prevents initial scans.

My advice, from someone who colected many samples from interceptors, dont use a DBX. You need to survive if things go sour. You already have 2 samples and you're trying to get last sample, lets say a Medusa sample, and if something doesnt go as planned you can lose the 2 other samples.
I used a Cobra MkIII with a DD5 mod. She was cool enough and i had enough heat sinks when i needed to use one.
Everytime i saw the Interceptor getting mad because of something or a small mistake, two boosts and i'm safe, not losing any previously collected samples.
Then, it's all a matter of patience, trying to find the right interceptor model and hoping the idiot limpets work!

The 'advantage' of a DBX is it's so slow that if you mess you probably die, so you get to learn the technique  Though as you say, other ships are available (haven't lost a DBX recently, except through my own stupidity) ;)

Yeah. I use that one for Thargoid biopsies. You get all the different kinds of interceptor turning up. I am not very lucky with the return of the limpet though. So often empty

I picked up a Medusa sample from one of the wrecked megaships in Deciat last night. Used a silent running DBS with clean drives. It never even saw me!

ExoForce, the second Ram Tah mission that sends you to the Guardian Structures requires Thargoid Samples (cyclops, basilisk, and medusa) and technology (Sensor, Probe, & Link) to complete. If you collect all of the lore messages it pays out 58 million. If you haven't tried it yet I highly recommend it. you can finish it in just a few hours of play if you rush it.

Thanks CMDR. That will fit nicely with my "hunt for Thargoids wakes".
