Modes Should FDEV remove SOLO mode and add a PvP/PvE toggle instead?

So apparently FDev want more people to play in open.
However the problem is not everyone wants to participate in pvp.
Not everyone is interested in being competitive all the time.

So how bout they add a function on the system panel to enable/disable player weapon damage and collision damage?
If you enable it you are in PvP mode(current open rules) for at least 1 hour.
When it is disabled, any damage done to a player from another player is ignored.
Kind of like the system they have in World of Warcraft on PvE servers.

I personally do not like being ganked, and do not like ganking other people. I would however enjoy playing in open to see and communicate with other players around. And do occasional pvp activity(powerplay?).

I also find it very unrealistic to have so called pirates in super high tech ships zooming around in civilized space killing random targets and not suffer any real consequences. In reality they would be hunted down and killed for good. Or they would have to hide in anarchic systems with access to minimal of hardware, and the most shoddy ships available.

Right now open is just a free for all pew pew fest that I stay out of.

Short answer: nope.

Long answer: the three game modes have been part of the game design from the outset (over five years ago) - and every player who either backed or bought the game did so with that design in place - plus the fact that console players without premium platform access *cannot* play in either of the multi-player game modes - in a game where multi-player is optional.

Speaking as a 99% Solo player...no.

And also speaking as that player...is open really 'just a free for all pew pew fest'? I highly doubt it.

My solution (coughofflinemodecough) is quite easy - two accounts each player, one for solo/group, one open and no mode switching allowed. Job done.

Ok keep solo mode for the console peasants then :D Adding a PvE switch would still get more people to play in open.

The kickstarter also had offline play promised, remember, so it's not that they couldn't change the current modes a bit ;)

As a 100% solo player I really can't see any issue of playing open PvE. (except the bandwidth mentioned)

Not at the beginning it didn't - Offline mode was added to the scope (that already contained the three online game modes) about halfway through.

You assume that the reason people play solo is dislike of being 'ganked' because that's what you don't like.

Plenty of players use solo mode because they don't want to play Elite with other people. At all.

The mode system provides a solution for all play styles, it doesn't need changing. And what makes you say FD want more people in open? Most people are already there...

No!

I play solo mode because I don't do multiplayer in any form or shape.
I hugely prefer games without other humans in them.
I do not wish to pointlessly 'communicate' with others in my games: "What are you doing? ", "Where are you from?" etc. etc.

Solo mode is what was left after the off line mode got canceled.
FDev will never remove solo mode after that disappointment.

However I am willing to pay 100 bucks extra for an offline version of the game that concentrates on solid pve mechanics and single player game systems, instead of wasting time on multiplayer shenanigans that add very little to the experience.

ED could be so much more, but to me it feels like multiplayer/pvp prohibits that. Instead of a good NPC crew system we got multiplayer crew. What a success that is. Instead of being able to wing up with npc, do escort missions, hire npc guards we get multiplayer wings etc. etc. etc. Hugely disappointing as far as I am concerned.

Because I want to, I'm rarely interested in interaction in the game, and the mode is no big deal?

There's this stupid idea that Open is the real game, and it's not.

Of course not.
If you remove all the pve mechanics there's no game left.
If you remove all the pvp/multiplayer stuff, there still is a game.

Ok i see your points. Valid at that.

I still think it needs a PvE switch though :p

Or at least separate open pve play mode. But that doesn't help on the low player population in game I see people complain about. Better to stick everyone on same mode IMO.

As others have mentioned: i usually don't go to solo. But sometimes, when the "awesome" (*cough*) P2P architecture decides that somebody with bad connection or inadequate CPU capacity should now be my host, I see no other option than to go solo. Chasing rubberbanding targets is no fun.
.
So simply for technical reasons (and for FD decided to save a few bucks), solo is a necessity.
.

I fear that your post is based upon faulty premises, OP.

There is no active effort to push people into open. The game already has a PvP toggle: solo/ a PG where PvP is unlikely to transpire.

A toggle would be nothing except a gamey immersion killer, and a waste of dev resources.

There's been no mention from FDev about removing any modes, nor of them wanting more people in Open.

I do wonder where a lot of this comes from.
