Game's future

After reading this thread again, I have come to a rather startling revelation - this game will never die!

Why you ask, because there is a dedicated band of people who will continuously complain about it, players who haven't touched the game in 2 years, players who tell us the game is totally unplayable, players who nit-pick every nuance in the game - they are keeping it alive because they continue to talk about it. Any sane, rational person would stop having any involvement in something they despise so much, but these gallant troopers will continue to spread the word about ED, they will do their best to ensure the game is mentioned which will draw others in to see what all the fuss is about.

So from someone who still enjoys the game, is still finding new things to do, I thank you :D

You're not wrong, but to hell with those players. They need to know that nobody needs them. Nobody!

I don't know if you're including me but just for the record, I don't despise ED.
I would recommend this game to anyone who is into spacegames and hasn't got it yet.
They're in for 2000+ hours of fun when they like playing it the way I do.

I'm just bummed that I can't find any more fun in this game after those 2000+ hours.
Of course I hope Fdev will change that with the Q4 update, but I am very carefull with my expectations.
If I don't vent the things that bother me or what I would like to see being added then they'll never know.
I care for this game, a lot, but if Fdev doesn't care about me having fun any longer then our ways part.
Sounds entitled maybe but I can only speak for myself and what I think of this game.

If I despised ED then I would never have managed to put so many hours in and spend as much on store items as I did.

Agreed. I still love ED. I still play it but not as much as I used to. I want to and I see whats in front of us. But the playing field is uneven. Ships dont have an identity at the moment.

People are calling me crazy or saying I want to rip a part of the game away from them. I dont.

However, there are parts of this game that need to be restricted. So those ships have an identity and continuous gameplay vs each other. Once we have about 2000 hours. Its the same thing over and over again. Only to be undone by someone "playing their way" in private and solo undoing any progression you have made.

Then you dig deeper with the BGS and one click transactions. Cobra's having the same impact as a cutter for christs sake. Thats the dumbest thing ever.

There are a lot of underlying issues people want fixed before the new content.

Thats why I am EXCITED for this Beyond update at the end of the year. They are working on the multiplayer part of the game. With the proposals and stuff they have mentioned with squadrons.

I feel we are in a good place.

Hopefully with this new building they are in. We will start seeing content at a much faster rate.

They did say they were working on the Xpac all at the same time in one of Brabens Interviews.

So even though A lot of us are taking a break. We haven't lost interest. We're just waiting for the good stuff.

Actually, the thing that keeps the game alive is updates.

No, definitely did not mean you, I like your posts, constructive criticism is always good.

As for your feeling that you have exhaustion in the game, that is understandable to a degree after 2000+ hours. I know I tend to take a break, which can last from a week to a few months until I get the itch again. I actually created a thread a short time ago where I listed some of the things in the game I have never done, and it turned out far better than expected. Due to the excellent replies to that thread, I decided to try some of the game elements I haven't done, found a new lease of life so to speak.

Anyway, if I offended you I do apologise.

I wasn't offended so apologies aren't necessary:D

I just wanted it to be clear that although I have my "difficulties" with ED right now I would never claim it to be a bad game.
Yes I enjoy NMS a lot at the moment and imho I think Fdev could learn a thing or two about fair effort vs reward mechanics from that game.
Still ED is a marvel as a spacegame but to keep the long time players in, Fdev will need to add more things to do instead of introducing new toys and I don't mean exhausting grinds or rng based elements.

I said it before, I'm no white knight but I'm definitely not a doomsayer either.

I certainly hope the game's not going anywhere. After my computer went zippity zappity, I switched to a very old, low powered Mac, and won't be able to afford another system capable of running Elite for at least another year. It has been months since I've played, and I look forward to coming back.

I've been taking an vacation from the game, while I remain an unperson on the boards.

The game is not dead. I'm just waiting for December, and improvements to exploration. I do not think I am alone in waiting.

Actually the developer does. They will want more players, not less? Frontier needs players because the game is built for them. Players are the reason the game exists at all, no? Telling everyone to leave, for long enough, generally means most everyone leaves.

Here's a thought. What would happen if the developer, and folks playing, actually encouraged people to play again. Supported. Added new challenges and experiences to enhance the existing? Crack open the window and let a bit of fresh air in?

What am I saying. No. Of course not. Don't be stupid. Get out. All of you. lol.

The players referred to in the original post are toxic to the game, and the forums. They are actively engaged in doing down ED, FD and any forum poster who doesn't share their unrelenting cynicism.

As for 'telling everyone to leave', absolutely no-one has done that ever. As you well know.

If you care to look through the exploration and newcomer forums, the various screenshot threads, you'll find plenty of folks playing who are actively encouraging and supporting the game. In around 9 months, FD will have added two significant, and two minor, updates that have and will add new challenges and experiences. You're allowed to not like them, but to suggest - or say outright - that FD is doing nothing is just a lie.

So, did we finally get an answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything, yet?

Because if not...

Excuse my English.
I don't understand some of the reactions here. I don't think it's an attack, or FD Bashing. It's a probably fact: Elite has probably reached its lowest level of players on Steam (and only on steam).

Is that a problem? yes, it is for me
Is Elite dead: absolutely not for me.
Should we not deal with it and say "everything is under control", "everything is perfect": I think that would be a very serious mistake.

I play Elite since Beta 1 and leadplayers groups and communities in France. Very modestly, I notice that things are not going so well for the game. Groups are lot of difficulties to retain their players, it's a fact.
Elite has reached its lowest level of players on steam. I don't need numbers, I live it every day in my communities.

This mirrors my experience with French/Belgian/Swiss player groups. About 75% attrition loss from 2.0.
Some will say it's anecdotal. Maybe. Maybe not. But since 2.0 the losses in our group have been severe.
New players don't stick very long either in my experience.

In the end it's FDev problem, not ours. We can only report what we see. They got the stats and everything.
I do think there is a large disconect between how the devs think the game plays and the actual experience.
Probably to much console cheats used in testing ;)

Nope. Lowest level of players on Steam was April 2016. It's true that player numbers are currently low though, but that will probably change with the update coming next week and the big one at the end of the year.

I could really get behind this whole no future thing .. again.

Suspicious how no one ever posts forum activity charts.

I'll give it a go....

Frankly is disgusting that more forum carebears are scared to log into open forum mode and languish in Solo guest mode.
Oddly enough, this is off-peak for the forums right now. In about six to ten hours from this post, this generally reaches upwards of around 10,000 total.

I no longer believe they are fanbois, instead---paid forum monitors.

CMDR Eagleboy is a fan but is indeed genuine and responds with balance and from a true player's pt of view---which is rare here

Not even the moderators are paid, do let me know where this pot-o-money is at however. [money]

You're missing a screenshot of the forums though! Must be one of those ethereal-like forums. ;)

me and my friends are giggling at amount of fanboys, whiteknights and apologists (one even seem to have made whole thread to somewhat excuse steamcharts) that attacked this thread

oh and yes i know im right from amount of REP im recieving for first post
So i loaded up my handy-dandy SQL editor, and decided to see how many reputations you've received for your initial post. Current count is 13 users (as of this post) have repped your post. Of those users, they've varying levels of rep power, from 0 to 5. This has resulted in 45 total reputation points gained from your post that you've made. :p

I see it whenever I log into the game and look at my friends list, which consists of hundreds of explorers. I used to see dozens of people online no matter when I logged in, lots of green icons all over the galaxy, but for the past year or so thats been dwindling. The last time I logged in on a Saturday night a few weekends ago I had five friends online. That would have been a couple dozen a year ago. Nowadays I hardly see anyone online anymore except for a handful of explorers who still play regularly.

Maybe they are all as frustrated and disappointed as I am.
