Guardian SLF - magic ships?

All of these posts talking about magnets seem to be forgetting that in the zero-G vacuum of space, your magnets would repel those fighter's bits into infinity.

Rep for mentioning the word, infinity. There just aren't enough infinite things in the world imo.

I'm thinking the key - possibly to shield technologies too - may be the ability to warp and shape electromagnetic fields at will. If you imagine an electromagnetic field, arcing in a loop outside the fighter and the wing sits 'on' the centre of it? That way the wing can't be attracted too close or repelled too far away but it's held fast on the centreline of the (flux) loop. By increasing/decreasing the loop size you can change the position of the wing to suit, like a sweeping wing for flight configuration. (ps. it looks like that might be happening on the release vid and I love 'what if' Physics in any case)

I like them but there is a problem:

If humans have recreated this guardian technology and applied it to SLF, why not apply it to all sorts of things, old or new. like tractor beams, gravity generators, all other human ships etc.? The entire galaxy should look a lot different now so that's why this new addition doesn't make sense to me.

It would make more sense if we found some ancient guardian hangar full of their ships and decided to take them for a spin :D

Tractor beam technology will come once we start getting hybrid thargoid tech on our ships, since they use it. :D

There is no known property of 'magnetism', that can simultaneously repel AND attract an object at a specific distance with enough force to stay rigid under the effects of thrust or even centrifugal forces from turning a spaceship. Whatever the force holding these ships together is, it has nothing to do with magnets.

Agree with OP, this is not the direction I was expecting the game to take. I don't have a major issue with it, and yes, they look cool, but it seems strange to have the rest of the universe (the human universe) so grounded in realism, to the point of not having conveniences (autopilot), and then suddenly having 'quantum attracting' space ship parts made by carnivorous space elves.

Meh...

We already have shields that can act solidly enough to stop bullets, explosions and rail shots, is it really such a leap to consider such energies being used as connective tissue in a light fighter? If anything, based on displayed human shield tech I'd imagine the only in-universe drawback would be power consumption, which compact Guardian tech could solve for.

It's obviously witchcraft.

Throttle, stick, seat and hud will be the same as for any other ship.

Yep, they're still designed by the same people and those things are pretty much the same across all ships. We can't be having new shinies in the pilot seat just because it's alien tech, that'd be silly.

Isn’t “The Expanse” THE science fiction epos loved for its down to earth (does this make sense?) technology approach?
I don’t want to do spoilers ... but it doesn’t stay like that.

And I still love it!

Uhmmm
The new technology is not even introduced yet. I don't see how it could have changed the entire galaxy already.

and... I have to say it... its a game.

You're right I've figured it out!!!!!!!!!!!

Guardian fighters = artificial holdy together things
artificial holdy together things = artificial gravity
artificial gravity = space-legs!!

just to finish this properly:

spacelegs = things with legs.
things with legs = sore feet
sore feet = podiatric orthotics

orthotics confirmed in season 4.

And we will be able to customize them in the shop.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over this decision but there is a nagging part of me that wishes they hadn't gone down this route, for all the reasons outlined. As soon as I saw the YouTube video I wondered how long before people complained about the force-wings, so I scrolled into the comments. It wasn't long at all. And it was frequent.

Tractor beams confirmed! :D

That was my train of thought too. Which is great for potential easier implementation of space legs (although personally I'd prefer zero-g, if it's gravity plating or nothing I'll take the plating).

But the elephants in orbit are the space stations. With universally available artificial gravity (and it would have to be universal if the easy space legs theory is right) there'd be no need to rotate the stations any more. Indeed there'd be no need for new build stations to be cylindrical or to have habitat rings. All that lovely High Frontier-esque design, rendered obsolete.

I can accept a great many things in the Elite universe, but I don't think I'll ever be ready for non-rotating Coriolis stations or stations without rings. They're too iconic. If we do get universal gravitics, someone will have come up with some very solid lore as to why it's more practical to expend energy keeping legacy stations rotating than to retrofit them with gravity plates.

Too much, magic bus!

Probably a forgotten song by now....

Maybe the wings are holographic, or telepresence wings.

Or possibly the wings are actually solid and the middle bit a telepresensced holograph.

Also Guardians can do the floaty electric ball at the Guardian sites so there's (kinda) prior art.
