ED is a "different" kind of game and today I finally realized this

The fact that ED is entirely different to almost ANY other game became clear to me today hauling 2.5M worth of Consumer Tech from LHS 3262 to some god-forsaken place elsewhere...

NERVES ON EDGE...

Say, if I were to "play" a flight simulator like FSX I wouldn't really care should I crash. Here it would be BAD, very bad. Even with plenty of money left in the bank to buy back your ship.... the POTENTIAL of losing millions and the time invested....as nerve-wrecking as it is...also has some odd appeal.

Here you only have one choice: You become a master in hauling/controlling your ship, including fighting, fleeing, docking etc......and of course you equip your ship looking that bad eventualities can not even happen in the first place.

Your ship/cargo/money is not some expendable thing you get back infinitely, like some game character in another game who might "die", but then you get rezzed and game goes on like nothing happened.

HERE...your ship is an asset. You work for it and on it...for days, for weeks. You trade ad nauseaum to make millions, always with a certain risk, to get your ship the best armour, weapons etc..etc.

I know that AT SOME point, I *will* lose millions in cargo. I am not even talking PvP here. (I am too apple to go on open play WITHOUT a pear of money...and knowing I got the best armour/weapons etc. so I can at least somewhat tolerate the occasional loss.

It is this challenge, the ultimate motivation that I REALLY HAVE TO get the ship to its destination in one piece....that I cannot afford to do "stupid things" in game because of the consequences...which make this game really unique, challenging and addicting. When you made your first trade runs with millions of cargo...you will understand. When you got your Anaconda, fully decked out (which I still don't have, but sooooon...) and your sweat runs down your forehead because you don't know whether you make it through the bay....you will understand... (Edit: What on earth is the clearance of a type 9? DO they even have a clearance???? I always scrape stuff with it... :) )

When you fly a 6.5M ship with 3M full of cargo....and you spot a pirate.....you will understand. And of course you will understand when you fly a 6.5M ship, decked out with the best of the best and you know that at least no NPC doesn't have a remote chance..you will understand also why this game is so unique :) When you hauled 2.5M of cargo through several systems and escaped some pirates...and finally managed to land with 40% hull intact...and you make 500.000 credit after the successful docking....you understand why this game is unlike any other :)

In that, it reminds me of Ultima Online.
You could insure your equipment (pro-active insurance, that you pay at the time you insure the item, not when you use it (you have to renew it though)), and death could set you back several thousand gold coins. You could lose the rest of you stuff: bandages, potions, gold, etc unless you quickly went back to loot your own corpse within a certain time.
Death was a bit more exciting than the ghost walk in WOW.

Its that same feeling you get after a successful trade run in the very first Elite, with an end successful docking. Now you know why there are so many old-timers in ED, way to go commander;)

Do the open play online mode it will sure make sweat pour down you forehead ... but I got used to it ... nothing much to worry about as the security is up in the air right now and the police are not letting crime hit the ceiling ... not that there is any ceiling in space... :D

Well to illustrate that I tried to shoot a online player near a station and in 5 secs the police were on me and my ship blew up in 2 secs when the station opened fire ... just to test how good these security were near station , I was impressed!:D

I know the feeling only too well. It may be an age thing but after a very tense run, once I've finally touched down and sold that cargo I've had to leave the game and go for a cup of tea to calm down.

Have some rep. This is the quintessential Elite experience.

It's the reason why a lot of people including myself are jumpy about adding to or changing the magic Elite formula too much.

Imagine what it'll be like when the galaxy is opened up and you might have to spend several nights getting a massive haul 200 light years to make a huge profit, and have people along to help.

The short list

Welcome aboard Commander.:)

I agree. Elite: Dangerous is already something quite special. And it's not even finished yet.

A few games have made a distinct impact in my life.
  • The original Elite
  • Elite 2: Frontier
  • The first DOOM
  • The first Resident Evil
  • The first Tomb Raider
  • The Demons and Dark Souls series
  • Borderlands 1 and 2
  • The Fallout saga
  • Skyrim

And now Elite: Dangerous. It is well on the way to becoming an instant classic. I love it!:):rolleyes:

Fly safe.:)

This rings so true from earlier versions of the game,
VERY happy that feeling is being refound .. and with "somewhat" updated graphics

unfortunatly with all those loan and insurance things planed, this will get away ;/

.. then again, there will also be an Ironman Elite Mode (Where Death = Death and where Iron players can never be grouped with normal commanders)

Now imagine all this adrenalin pumping, bottom twitching excitement in Ironman mode. I think we may need medical teams on stand-by.

I can't wait to start in Ironman mode. I half expect that I'll end up being a bit lame hough and choosing to continue my commander in normal mode once I'm destroyed. One of my long term aims with the game though is to have an Ironman mode explorer who successfully makes a run into deep space, finds something unique, or at least ridiculously valuable and then survives the return trip to the core systems to sell the info on.

I was thinking the same. Actually, as long as you have insurance covered, at least in Beta, there is no risk of loss really. I know this will be more balanced in release but generally being immortal means any loss is no more than a hiccup.
Looking forward to Iron-man, that is where the fun will be for me, I also will enjoy being a god-like immortal in normal mode too of course... :D

Hi Flexy,

I'd suggest you try the open world to see how you feel about it. Single mode is always there to fall back on, and any progress you make in beta will be wiped eventually. So this is an ideal time to try all the different flavours Elite has to offer.

beads of sweat

Yes it can get the heart going somewhat...particularly when you are dropping off in an anarchy system, I find silent running and many heatsinks help calm the nerves :)

Keep true to this spirit and please don't post a "I have lost everything" or "pirates are griefers" thread when it does go wrong for you during a trade run (which will happen eventually)

I share your sentiment about ED, but we shouldn't let exitement become frustration when things don't work out. :)
