What would happen if Frontier pulled support for ED tomorrow?

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
The game would be over.

The sun would still come up the next morning.

:)

I own several accounts, through steam, oculus and Frontier. What would happen if DB told Frontier to “pull the plug?”

Could they just switch off the servers and say “that’s all folks?”

Just curious

Technically speaking, yes.

Legally speaking, probably.

Community wise, it would be a big blow to their reputation.

Perhaps a less damaging option would be to put the game into maintainance mode, no new content, only bug fixes for critical issues. People can continue playing. Possibly release an offline or standalone server patch.

Its a bit of a silly question though as FD recently reaffirmed their commitment to conitinued support and development. Although companies in the past have done such and then within weeks turned off servers... so perhaps not so silly.

Still, i don't see any reason at this point to think FD will do this. They are in a strong position financially and the CEO has a strong connection with the game.

Oh, and of course, if they did switch off the servers, there would be a lot of impotent forum rage, threats of legal action, demands, threats, etc, all of which would be, as the saying goes, urinating into the wind.

Personally i'd be very dissapointed, but then shrug my shoulders and get on with gaming. There are many games out there. For years i've been leery of games that requires online connections, it would probably just reinforce that opinion and make me less likely to buy online games.

I saw Braben docking on the Gnosis this morning, just saying.

Braben doesn't dock with the Gnosis. The Gnosis docks with him!

Paid content even for people like myself that has full lifetime 'freedom'... That or monthly subscription.

We do have to have a grown-up chat about keeping the game forever available, now forever is a long time, but you get what I mean.. Think 'Eve'.

Many of us would put money in, just for the game to start to grow, lets say.. a little better again.
Get some real content in there.

There will come a time, because FDEV are a share holder company, when it starts to look like it may be falling off a little 'money wise'. They will have to pull the plug, simple as that.
It's o.k. to leave it to the community, but the community won't agree on a direction for the game, even if they had access to do so. Far better to keep the devs as the builders, with a say 'set team' that works on ED, financed by the playerbase.

I think there's a little bit of a lot of us who sacrifice far too much of our lives for this game that would be like ...

Well

They did promise to release it into public domain after they finish development

I for one, will have enough server power very shortly to host pretty sizable numbers of users. I'd probably ask $1/month to pay for power consumption.

Not sure where people are getting this from. I don't recall anything like that. The only thing i recall was them saying they would make an offline patch.

If they switched the servers off tomorrow, I'd not notice until my next random foray into the game. Lol

I doubt they'll do that any time soon. But when they do, I'm hoping the community somehow keeps it going.

Of course.

No one is going to maintain and support the game if they aren't paid to.

Even if their was, the obligation is to the corporation. If it goes under the former members are significantly protected by it being a limited liability corporation.

I cant find the quote but at the very beginning David said that if they ever "pull the plug" they will open the game for community to maintain. So... I guess that would happen.

Maybe it would, but that's far from a sure thing.
