News Chapter Four - Exploration Reveal

You don't realize the value of the current ADS and why the quick "honk, check, jump" mechanic is valuable when you're not traveling extremely vast distances across the galaxy.

FWIW, I have traveled vast distances across the galaxy. Not Beagle Point, mind you, but I have a ship parked in Colonia and a sizeable plot of first discoveries around a nebula deep in the galactic core. However, I tend to be in one of two modes - "highway travel" where I jump, scoop-n-honk but do not open the system map (takes too much time), and repeat in order to get to my destination as fast as possible. Once there ('there' being an interesting sector of space), then I switch to "get out of the car and walk around town" mode, taking my time, manually selecting my next jump from the galaxy map, using the system map, and really exploring.

Your suggested method of "exploring" is like Lewis and Clark insisting that road signs be in place before they set out to cover their "extremely vast distances". That's not exploring, that's a road trip.

My biggest issue so far is that surface scan won't reveal temporary POIs. I hope that change in future. For example when you look for poor souls crashed in their escape pods.

I second this motion, both from a gameplay perspective and a "that's how it should work in 3304" perspective.

I agree. Systems with beacons should allow full data from that primary honk rather than dropping from sc to scan the beacon, as that scanning process also uses the similar method(lock on and wait) as the old planetary scanning technique, so it might seem out of place post patch anyway.

I'm against the automatic beacon honk because as it stands now there are still rewards given out for discovering planets in beaconed systems. That would go away with the automatic beacon honk, leading to loss of credits and exploration rank. Maybe as a compromise it should be possible to select the beacon from supercruise and then specifically honk the beacon to get the full system information that way (or drop out at the beacon and then specifically honk the beacon instead of the "waiting for scan to complete" mechanic we now have.

The new exploration mechanics sound pretty good and are much needed. Am looking forward to the beta. My only, slight, concern at this point (and I appreciate more will be revealed in the coming weeks) is how well the new exploration interface will work in VR. As most VR players can attest the current flat system map doesn't really work at all well; largely because it's sooo slow to navigate. Will the new exploration interface be VR friendly?

Unidentified Signal Sources

Along with the Exploration update, we are improving the way that USSs work. USSs will now spawn throughout the entire system when you first enter it. This enables you to use the new exploration tools to find USSs throughout the system, not just in the area around you. You can still interrogate nav beacons to find the locations.

Whilst USSs do still have a decay time, the timers have been increased to allow you time to find and fly to the ones you are interested in. The decay time is also now displayed when targeted. Signal sources still obey rules determining where they can appear within a system, and mission critical signal sources will still be highlighted to differentiate themselves once located.

If I hear one more "Frontier doesn't listen" Im gonna spin-kick somebody.

They listen...but the changes you are coveting are never going to be made!

I am happy to hear that the USS RNG is dead...

I always check the system map during the FSD charge, I'm waiting anyway, so it doesn't cost me extra time.

The system map does cost extra time on my PS4, probably because it is rendering 3D assets for each planet in the system (something a powerful PC will do better at).

Regardless, I'm sticking with my punchline :p

Multi-Crew

As part of the exploration update, we are making sure that multi-crew members can use the discovery scanner and detailed surface scanner at the same time and all discoveries are shared among crew or wing.

This allows wings or commanders in multi-crew to engage in exploration together, each earning credits and exploration rank and making the process more efficient.

Any chance that crewmates will gain SRV access in multicrew with this update? Talking about multicrew exploration that does not include SRV access, isn't really talking exploration is it?

They've already answered, no, SRV is locked when multicrew is active.

Looks really good!

I hope the DSS probes don't take any cargo space, rather they are stored within the DSS itself. If not that would destroy small exploration ships with limited module space. I assume that is not the case since you said you don't need to come back after the changes (like for example to equip a cargo rack).

Or even a crappy one like mine.

But yeah, that is a shame. Lets hope Frontier will put the electromagnetic signatures in a sort of system map which is way faster in loading times because it doesn't have to render.

When during my road trip, I spot something 200 yards of the side of road and decide to park my car, get out, want to put on my hiking shoes, realise I should do that in the car, get into the car again, put on my hiking shoes, get out my car, and start towards that thing I spotted to investigate.

Is that exploring? :)

Aren't you supposed to be the white knight and I the cynic? What is this, Freaky Friday? [haha]

The probes work by impacting on the surface of the planet, you are not attempting to get them into an orbit.

OOOO, Does this mean it's possible to put something into orbit?

Would LOVE for a CMDR to come along and be all "Damnit, Guy. You did it again" 20yrs into the future.
