Planetary landings

It has been said that landings are expansion exactly because FD want to "do it properly" (or words to that effect). I take that to mean two things; 1. interesting visually, and 2. gameplay attached.

It's difficult to predict how it will be, but I feel it was really wise to start with the ship and go down on one scale (to first person) and up, into planet generation, in a modular way, from a programming point of view. (This to me is where SC might possibly have miscalculated, but that's another thread).

"Dinosaurs", yes please (Commander eaters please) . Outlandish alien forms (no Brachiosaurus pls); Air-breathing Quadra-pi, sentient corals? :D:D

see ED could pull that off way better for the procedural games. and on top of that create a more hand crafted huge detailed city that one can spend hundreds off hours in if the player choices

There wont be "handcrafted" places, just handcrafted elements in the procedural "algorythm"(well this is stupid, but you know what I mean:cool:)
And that's the whole point, I dont want from them to make cities by hand, I want from them to improve this technology to the edges, and they will. I can't wait for it.

don't get me wrong i love that idea and to see how far they can push that. but i really want a futuristic city, something i have not seen before...i don't want to be in a experiment. know what i mean?
i will pay for that amazing beautiful city one that they worked hard on. not the computer and so far they don't really have that....so i don't want it until they do.
so again i'm not afraid to shell out money for a quality cities

Have they said anything about some specific locations being hand-crafted? It would make sense for e.g. the capital city of the factions to be at least partially manually designed.

right!?? that's what i'm saying. i'm sure they could do settlements with procedural generation. but i really want a properly designed city
and yes he did mention or hinted about it.

I think you still don't get it, or it's me who completly missunderstand this technology. The procedural kinda means that the algorythm decide where the "things" go and how. So they can make handcrafted "city parts" what the algorythm randomly, but still driven by a lots of rules, position on the planet. It means you will see huge futuristic cities what completly different from each other. Imagine that the developers create lots of different architectural styles in algorythm, they create a lot of rules like the buildings must be build up by available resources on the planet. This shortly means you are not going to see 1 or 2 huge city, but a thousands of them. All of the planet has different culture and different architectural styles. And these are just cities, you can think about wild life, canyones, montains, waterfall everything what the athmosphere and other conditions allow. And I MEAN EVERYTHING

Pls watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZO40WBNA60

This game is completly procedural, EVERYTHING what you can see there even the animals!
And I know that Frontier can do a much better work. And they will do it completly procedural, and if you dont like this dont worry. You just simply dont understand this technology, yet. But few years from now, possibly when Frontier implements this feature, you are going to love this technology and praise the developers.

Moreover if they do it proceduraly, it doesnt mean they cannot upgrade it from time to time.In my opinion it will be easier. As the technology improve as Elite will follow. That's why I love it:)

To the End: You guys still thinking in small, but dont worry E: D wont:cool:

don't get me wrong i understand exactly what you mean, but if the city cannot be properly made where one thinks to himself "this was made by a computer" then it's not really something i want to play. i know they are going to mix up procedural and hand crafting into the cities. but still i don't want them to make it just procedural unless it can do it properly.
but yes over the years the game will become beyond anything we can imagine. and DB is the master of this. so there will be two huge very "cared for cities" and then there will be settlements and nature that will be made procedural. that we can expect soon, very soon.

thanks for the vid. btw

You are very much wellcome.
As far as I can see how the developers work, they wont praise up 1 or 2 cities from the others. I think all the cities will be similarly important, couse our gameplay will (possible) effect the actual planets and their cities, like It's effect now(well not exactly now) the stations and star systems.
I still think that procedural generated cities will be beautiful. It's up to the developers to write the algorythm properly. The fact that they plan this feature as an expansion, shows that they very know what work it means to get it properly, I dont think they let it through their hands while It's not perfect. But there is sg what we can agree on, no matter how they do it, when it's finished it will be mindblowing;)

i agree one thing i trust these guys 100% and they will make a game that is mind blowing and we will be happy to throw money at them.
But i still want a city that i can't tell is made by a computer, i know they can do it with trees, mountains, hills, rivers, and natural occurrences to a point where we would be amazed and be questioning if the staff did it or the computer.
but i still want a city that is amazing and i honestly doubt atm they can do that. i want a quality city and i will pay good money for it. i mean i spend hours and hours on games. i don't want to go into a city and think "this is made by a computer" where we see patterns, and what not. i want them to be involved in the city process.

but you do agree with me that you want the choice to spend hours and hours in a city correct??

The internal space station designs and the external differences in the 'ringed stations' are strong hints at what the planets cities will look like, especially the subtle differences within the internal docking areas of the stations and different building types and even sculpted gardens.

We've already got our first look in the stations of cars driving on roads and what buildings will look like.

We're not going to have San Andreas GTA5 level cities in the game. Its just not going to happen......would it be great if they could ....sure .... not holding my breath though.

If they can create realistic landscapes (or exotic alien ones) that seem natural and cities that are grandiose large versions of what we see inside the docking cylinders .....then I will be a very very happy player.

I don't even expect Earth to look anything like it does now. According to Elite 2 and 3, it was bombed, razed and rebuilt multiple times to the point it looks very different ....even if they easily have the tech to do it, I'd be a little disappointed if they ignored their own lore from previous games and made Earth to look like it is now.

you're sooo sure aren't you? but i honestly say it will happen. it's possible. there is a demand and someone will supply it. i just hope Elite steps up to the plate. cause star citizen has to much of a crappy business model to do so.

Well the available activities what you can enjoy in a city may be not as vary as those are in gta5. But I dont think it's a must, they should work on that after release. I need more explorable locations, ancient ruins what actually can tell you some historic hint. I want to explore alien technology, uninhabited alien ruins, where I can study their culture and history. I want to explore new species in the living wildlife, I want to harvest interesting flowers, trees whatsoever. There a lot of things what can be more exiting then playing poker in a casino, however yes, I would love that.It can be refreshing when you just arrive from an expedition what took more then a half year...
But I dont expect they will be implemented at the release. It's just simply not the priority, but with time... yes it will be glorious in every angle:)

Your aggressive sarcasm is strange and unnecessary.
You are obviously very passionate about GTA and wanting it here. I, nor anyone else would complain if they manage to get that level of detail. I hope you'll be happy with what they end up releasing.

your sensitivity to that is very unbecoming of you.
look i don't know a single person that doesn't want to go into a ship then go through a atmosphere and then land on a city.
i'm already happy with what they got BUT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLtmEjqzg7M and that was PS4.....so again i say there is a demand, and it is possible.
what is strange is how you keep fighting it and it's very unnecessary.

Edit: well that vid is right above this post now:)
I would be disappointed, too. However it would be nonsense and they know it... so I dont worry

Well we are not against it, we just simply want sg else from this game FIRST(or atleast me). I would love if they implement some cool activites in the game, but what gta5 did, and now I am not talking about buildings just the meaning of the ALIVE city, It wont happen. And It's not because of how much money the rockstar spent on this, because most of the money went to the actors, just it would require an other expansion pack. I can wait for it, and all the sci-fi funs.

I'm not sensitive to it at all. Its just not part of this particular forum. Look around, is anyone else doing it ?
....I've received direct warnings by mods to my mailbox for not keeping it more civil in the past...

I'm not fighting anything. I'm discussing the possibilities of it.
If David Braben comes to me and asks, I'm sure as hell not going to say no. Don't worry, I'll take you side of the argument if the deciding vote comes down to me.

If you want to discuss the possibilities of it, lets look at the new outposts they've just released pics of in the newsletter. They look pretty cool to me. I can't wait to see them in game!
But they're a fair way from GTA5's detail, right?
So how do they get from these small outposts detail level to a GTA5 scale city?

i have to do what everyone else is doing? but eh whatever anyways

i don't think the outposts should be done like that. they should do outposts to a "few rooms" level. i'm only talking about two huge base cities that you can land and actually go inside of with detail and scale of gta 5, that is possible. and then procedural generation for settlements and towns. that is also possible. and move from there. now my question is if they sold two cities the size of two gta 5 maps for this game....would you not pay 120$ for it maybe even more?
