Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Triangle Triathlon 29th Sept to 8th October 3304

How could I miss this one?! SRV, SLF and regular ship flying??? I've not played in a while but it's like riding a bike surely? Surely not, oh boy am I rusty. Can't even read as it turned out. And Roco Loco (SRV) and I have fallen out. Actually I fell out of it literally, several times.

Great course!

Returned to Koolhaas' Folly this morning, the place is quiet now - just a few beer cans and a bit of torn bunting to mark that we were ever here. I re-fitted the Krait I arrived in but didn't have the heart to scrap the 30.6588/24.8607 so I think I'll leave it here as a lasting monument to an excellent race. On a whim I decided to fly to the opposite side of THAT crater and then drive the SRV all the way back. Going downhill is as brutal as ever but actually driving up the side we've all been coming down was strangely enjoyable, and far far easier.

Farewell Koolhaas, it's been a blast!

Well, I enjoyed myself, so thank-you to Edelgard von Rhein for hosting, and also to everybody else who took part, and helped make it a fun event.

As Alec said, it was a learning experience, and a good one.
Great to see people out there, and to chat, if only to say 'you go ahead' (I finally worked out how to use targeted chat, and why I'd want it).

Will I be back? Highly likely.

All I had to do was not impale the SLF and I should be able to jump up 2 places on the leaderboard!

Bah, "all I had to do was this", "if only I didn't do that"...pffft stop whining and git gud! Complain less and play more, and maybe, just maybe, if you practice long enough and possibly have any inch of talent, you too will be able to pull awesome stuff like this. Well maybe not as good as this, not everyone is me after all.

[where is it]

(mind you, not a blooper, that's actually from my latest official Regulation entry! I've been very, very, very lucky with that one :D)

Hahaha. What do they make these SLFs out of??? They are ridiculously strong for their size. I can't think of any ship that could take the kind of punishment we've put these through without blowing up, let alone not even losing their shields most of the time!

Sounds like a good plan - especially relevant since this weeks newsletter is encouraging everyone to be in with a chance of winning a paintpack by coming here! Just imagine if thousands of ED players suddenly decided to get involved? Your inbox would explode! [haha]
It would have taken me a long to time go through all the evidence if that has happened. There was plenty of activity on the final evening, though, and I logged in today to find this:
iUtstKf.jpg

There were 11 new entries in those messages, split between both categories.
I'm waiting on some video to upload (or be replaced with screenshots). Hopefully that will happen by this evening. I need to start working on summing up the final evening now, as there's a lot to cover!

On the final day after the last update, I suggested that 'Anything can happen as the final evening of racing approaches!'. It turned out that pretty much everything happened: there was a new fastest time in Regulation Keelback, podium changes in both categories with mere seconds separating competitors, improved times from some, new entries from others and familiar faces brought back to racing after an absence. The submissions included a novel technique for getting back to the mothership quickly after flying through the ring of a Majestic Interdictor, returning to a mothership under fire at Gridge, narrow escapes in the SRV with timely repairs, some fast driving both forwards and backwards, crashed fighters and classic lithobraking at Koolhaas' Folly. Where to begin?!
.
Single Unlimited saw two new entries from Commanders returning to Buckyball Racing after an absence, with CMDR Cheetah in the Krait MkII Pontiac Dream and CMDR Markzx59 in his Krait MkII This Side Down, both of them flying Taipans. CMDR Cheetah had the fastest SRV leg of the two, over 17 minutes, and completed the course in a decent time of 41:02 but CMDR Markzx59 was the faster overall, completing the SRV section in just over 18 minutes but getting around the course in 38:46. There was then a new entry from CMDR Bruski in his Krait MkII GenericKrait accompanied by a F63 Condor that was very close to an improved time from CMDR Aken B. in his Keelback Albion Skunk accompanied by a Taipan. CMDR Bruski had the faster SRV section, reaching the co-ordinates in 8:41, despite a bumpy start, and achieved the fastest times I have seen in the race in the SRV - exceeding 75 m/s both forwards and backwards! He experienced a close shave at Gridge where he incurred a bounty for trespass and had to dock under fire, his Krait MkII taking minor damage before escaping to safety, ultimately achieving a time of 26:34. CMDR Aken B. had a smoother but slightly slower SRV section - still a very impressive 8:55 to reach the target co-ordinates - and avoided trouble at Gridge but exited Glide on the opposite side of Koolhaas' Folly to the tunnel. Undeterred, he flew through the tunnel from the inside, which is more difficult due to the gradient of the slope, and this enabled him to touch down on the pad with a time of 26:31, just three seconds ahead of CMDR Bruski! Both CMDRs fully deserve their podium places but the winner of Single Unlimited remains CMDR Darplata94 in his Anaconda Space Between Stars accompanied by a Taipan fighter, with a time of 25:11 - many congratulations on your win, Commander! o7
.
Regulation Keelback continued to see the majority of the action and the first of two new entries was from CMDR -NEXUS- in the BLACK BOX (apologies for not being able to reproduce the two '-' in your name on the leaderboard) who demonstrated good in-flight handling of the SRV that enabled him to achieve a SRV leg time of 12:38 with minimal repairs, contributing to an overall time of 38:57. The second new entry was from CMDR Bruski in the La Cucaracha who achieved a time of 32:47, with a SRV leg this time of 10:48. His close competitor from Single Unlimited, CMDR Aken B., also submitted an improved time in this category with the Mammagamma that included his fastest SRV leg in either category, of 8:36, that contributed to his new time of 30:23. This time CMDR Aken B. was the one missing out on a place by mere seconds, as CMDR Darplata94 improved his time in the Cobbled Together to 30:19, including a SRV leg of 10:03, leaving him in 3rd place by four seconds! Another improved time was that of CMDR Painter602 in the Slow Terpischorean who managed a time of 45:13, including a SRV leg of 16:48 to reach the target co-ordinates and despite a fighter loss approaching the tunnel at Koolhaas' Folly, which represents an improvement of over 12 minutes from his first entry - a considerable achievement; well done Commander! CMDR MrMike also made another attempt to gain time in the Names are for Friends and assisted by a fast SRV leg time of under 13 minutes completed the course in a very respectable 35:39 - as a first-time Buckyballer, this is highly respectable! Ultimately, the honours in Regulation Keelback must go to CMDR Nezerroth in the YISS, who joins the very small cadre of players who have won a Buckyball Racing Club event at the first time of asking, with a time of 28:20, run just before the deadline, which included a SRV leg of 8:13. Not only was this a remarkable time, it included a SLF leg at Larg where he flew through the ring of one of the Majestic class Interdictors backwards with FA Off, enabling him to immediately boost back towards his mothership! Outstanding flying and driving Commander! This leaves CMDR Brabston, Timmy in second place with his time of 28:45. Congratulations!
.
I will send the results of both categories to Frontier. They have said that the top three racers will receive a paint job and although I suspect that this will be Regulation Keelback only, we'll have to wait and see what they decide.

Many thanks to everyone who took part! This has been an eventful race with many racers improving their times and changing positions on the leaderboards; there have been new faces and old making an appearance with surprising times and feats of flying and driving that are wholly remarkable! Thanks also go to Sagittarius Eye for their video bulletin and to Frontier's Ed Lewis and Will Flanagan for their livestream, having fun and helping to promote not just this event but racing in general.
.
This race might now be over but there are two ongoing challenges for which entries are welcome at any time: The Black Riband (a smuggling race) and The A* Challenge (from Sol or Wolf 359 to Sagittarius A*). The threads for these are below. The next Buckyball Racing Club event is not yet scheduled and we are looking for new organisers: you do not have to be a regular to run an event, anyone is welcome to visit our thread in the Groups subforum and discuss race ideas and to arrange a race of their own! We look forward to seeing you all in future races! Fly fast!

Brilliant race! Wished I'd done more with it. Well done to you winners and well done to all!

Thanks for organising Commander Edelgard. Nice to be back racing.

Seconding what Timmy just said ... wow, what an absolutely incredible finish to a really fantastic race! Thanks to Edelgard for running it and massive congratulations to Nezerroth, Darplata94, Timmy, Bruski and everyone else who competed and made this such an exciting event.

So yeah, as Edelgard mentioned, for the first time in quite a long while our race calendar is currently empty I believe (can't be 100% sure as our official club organiser Cmdr Drakhyr has gone missing and our website is therefore a bit out date at the moment). There are some ideas in the pipeline (there's a race tentatively entitled "Hot Off The Press" which I want to run in conjunction with Sagittarius Eye but in some ways it has too many similarities with "Triangle Triathlon" to run immediately afterwards and there's also something I might be doing with the Truckers in November). Anyway, you're all members of the Buckyball Racing Club now so if you have an idea for a race of your own that you'd like to run then do please come into either our main club forum thread here or else pop into our Discord channel to discuss it and I'll see if I can start putting together a calendar for future events. At the very least I'd like to have one in November and one in December.

To keep updated on future Buckyball Races stay subscribed to this thread ('cos I always add a follow-on link to the next race thread at the end of the last once we know what it is) and also keep an eye out on my "Best of Forum" thread and/or my forum signature banner (which always gets changed when there's a race coming up).

Fly fast commanders!

Thanks so much for an amazing race Edelgard, it really was great fun and as I said before it's the first time I've flown a Keelback or a SLF since their original Betas. Canyon racing in a SLF is definitely something I'm going to be giving a go now after trying them out.

A huge congratulations to Nezerroth for a maiden win, a fantastic job indeed! Also to Darplata94, a second win in a row and a podium before that has already seen you climbing the steps to Buckyball greatness. I'm once again amazed by how close the times are and there's 2 groups of people who are both only separated by 4 seconds!

Fantastic job everyone, so good to see so many people racing around, old and new [up]

included a SLF leg at Larg where he flew through the ring of one of the Majestic class Interdictors backwards with FA Off, enabling him to immediately boost back towards his mothership!

Now that I cannot wait to see! I mean the gap's not all that big anyway, that's a whole lotta craziness right there! You're going to fit in really well :D

Thanks for the fantastic race, Edelgard. You finally gave me an excuse to actually buy a fighter hanger. ;)

And congratulations to the winners, as well as to everyone, new and old, who ran the race.

I join everyone above in thanking Edelgard and congratulating with everyone: with her for the fantastic race she set up and hosted, with Nezerroth for his/her/its fantastic "out of the blue" performance, with Darplata94 for just having made a fantastic new enemy out of me :D (joking of course, but watch out for anything that could or could not be attached under your hull next time you depart from somewhere. Friendly advice.), and with just about anyone else old and new participating.

Sorry Bruski and Alec, still friends right? :p

Personally, that counts as victory for me anyway: I kept high the Keelback's reputation in Unlimited. Long live the Skunk! All your fancy, sleek new ships don't look that krayt now, don't they. [squeeeee]

Thanks to Edelgard for a truly great race and for making me use the SLF for once.

Congratulations to the winners, welcome and well done to the newcomers and lastly thanks to Racer1 and Cheetah for not letting me be last ;)

Wish I had more time for further attempts, but such is life.

Fly fast, everyone.

Thanks Cmdr Edelgard!! The race was very nice and educative. Thanks for your time!
Congrats to the winners, especially to Nezerroth, for his winning debut and Darplata94.
