Orrery!

It would be awesome if someday they allowed waypoint navigation via orrery (like stellaris) with an autopilot function or even a hired npc or multi-crew pc copilot navigating. Then with sl, you could watch from a window in your quarters, or in an observation window area of your ship. Or in your quarters on your desk, your laptop terminal could show the ships' sc progress in orrery navigation display.

To Fdev (not read all the thread yet)...

Thank You! Thank you! Thank you! From whiner to fanboi in one easy announcement (just saw it on the OA TLDW video). I [redacted] love this and you guys!!!
As promised I won't whinge for a good few months now, and can't wait to get back in the game (plus the other stuff looks amazeballs).

You done did good!

[up][alien][big grin] <3

Well played, FDev, kept that one very quiet indeed!

Really great to see an Orrery in the game at last! :)

---

And _please_ don't see this as me being ungrateful, but I hope this is only the first step towards the full implementation for it. At the very least, please consider the following:

* logarithmic scale button - allow switching between realistic and log scales for a more compact system overview

* will we be able to use the Orrery -instead- of the System Map; ie, for setting destinations, bookmarks, etc?

* fast forward / rewind time to see the system in action and to plan re-visiting it when interesting planetary alignments occur

There's obviously going to be other wishlists a mile long (enhanced graphics, display of dynamic items, etc), but the above items would be nice QoL improvements for me.

Yup, well said. The orrery looks terrific (and very well played on keeping that secret when a bunch of us visited FD a few weeks back - LOL) but there's certainly scope for future improvement too. One thing I'd really REALLY love is to be able to see the night and day sides of planets and to be able to fast forward time so that, if you're planning a planet side race or other event, you can see when your chosen site (e.g. a mountain you want to run a hill climb on) is going to be in daylight.

For now tho' - excellent work FD - bravo!

late converts, those are the worst! i'll be watching you!!!
(just joking, yes the orrery is way cool. frontier is indeed learning how to manipulate this congregation with little effort! ;))

LOL, an orrery was on my wishlist from the very first time I played the game, was kind'a shocked to discover it wasn't already in the game - but, along with the quality scanning options incoming (both system wide and planetary), encyclopedia thingy and seeded with stuff to discover; for me, the frontiers have opened up again.

The furthest I ever flew (for the Palin 5000 LYs natch), was over to the Orion nebula (always wanted to visit) but once done suicided for the very first time just to get back to the bubble because I realised there was nothing to discover (short of eyeballing an entire planet and striking lucky).

Rest assured tho, I agree with things you say far more than what golden eagle what's his name comes out with (tho' just recently he seems to have become somewhat more agreeable in his opinions and 'facts').

But from refusing to get hyped and fully expecting to delete the game when this update dropped I can feel that old excitement catching fire and lighting up the pleasure circuits in my brain - I'm even gonna engineer a Krait to take out into the black :)

You're talking about imagination. FD don't have any. You know this.

... and today's moron of the internet award goes to.....

So the company that have created a 1:1 representation of 400 billion stars (lets just say that again 400,000,000,0000 stars) in a glaxay you can fly your make believe spaceship around dont have any imagination??

If the orrery is fully functional, with everything selectable such as stations and planetary bases directly (as in, zoom right into the planet surface...omgomgomg....) as in the standard 2d view - it will be absolutely perfect. And if they updated it with USS and other 'things' in real time... that would be epic.

They stated on the live stream that the reason there was nothing showing on the planet surfaces was the planet they zoomed into had not yet been probed.
They aslo stated that USSs would be visible in the orerry.
They didn't explicitly mention anything about stations being mapped. However they DID say that fixed POIs like tourist beacons would be present. I can't believe the POIs and beacons would be included and not stations.

The context sensitive menu that popped up on the planet also seemed to have the book mark and plot route and show surface icons in it.
They didn't however say anythign about waypoints. Waypoints would be a significant QoL upgrade to both Galmap and the orerry.

No idea why people are losing their minds over thing. To be frank, I have not idea what an "Orrery" is, matter of fact I don't think it's a real word.... to many "r"s I picture it as something a British person would say when they spill their tea or sneeze or something...

An Orerry is a scientific model of a star system showing the orbits of the bodies in it. Mechanical ones are not to scale but software versions like the one FDev are developing have the ability to be to scale.

Orerry is a long established definition and has been used by astronmers for centuries. It's recognised as being the single best way of representing the motion f planets around a star.

Just because you have not heard of something is little reason to be dismissive.

Still reeling from the shear hutzpah of FD keeping this a secret from the "Blessed 17's" visit to Frontier a few weeks ago.

Well played chaps ... very well played!

[yesnod]

I dont think they did. Most of the 17 have been talkign about a 'big surprise in the UI' that people would like. I think that was the orerry.

As Alec is one of the Blessed 17 I'm sure he qualifies as knowing what was shown and what wasn't. The UI changes they were talking about were obviously about the major UI changes and not the Orrery map.

Actually, the person who spoke about a "big surprise" in the UI was Obsidian Ant and he meant nightvision mode. We had no inkling about the Orrery.

What I am getting excited about is potential of orrery. You can add huge amount of contextual information there (and I really hope FD will do that in future updates), but at the beginning just having 3D information of system is HUGE. It will change sense of systems in incredible way.
