∞ probes?

If you have infinite probes then any skill element is removed - just spam them until you have complete coverage.
At which point the only difference between firing one probe and having the entire planet scanned and firing multiple probes is the amount of time spent doing it.

That would fall under the common definition of 'grind'.

I've only really read the OP and your reply + or - a few others. Wouldn't the best option be that you don't get infinite probes but when you synthesise them you get loads of them; like 10000. So you have to do something about it eventually but it isn't a grind?

IMO, yes.

But that is just mindless fluff. Either it is relevant (OMG KOREAN MMO GRIND!!!!), or you have to do it once every million years and it effectively is unlimited. Kinda like how buying fuel has been cheapened to the point that they may as well force people to auto-click when docking. Its faux-depth. Which is how I read what they said: They tried to find a balance between the two, but just couldn't. Dont get me wrong, I wouldnt be opposed to fluffy faux-depth, but it isn;t a thing I have strong feelings on.

True immersionist are more than welcome to dump some mats from their inventory every [x] drones, so you can set your own level of grind. :p

Why can’t we just have synthesis to make better probes if we want to? They talked about engineering making more probes shot at once or better coverage. Just move that to probe synthesis.

I like this. Like 'improve radius' synthesis.

Then you dont get the efficiency bonus. "But I dont care about the efficiency bonus, I want to grind stuff for them on planets."

Okay, fine, but then you leave yourself open to:"I dont care about grinding stuff on planets, I care about efficiency bonus." Which kinda deadlocks the debate. :p

IMO, yes.

Seems like a good compromise doesn't it?

When I've done deep space exploration and my FSD has broken down I found it was pretty cool. Being forced to land on a planet or something similar to obtain the resources to explore would make it even better, so long as it was infrequent.

While you do have a point, I still think having probes that are actually spent would at least make me care when launching probes, though. As of now, it's a bit like reaching the football world cup final, going to penalty shootout and having unlimited kicks for that last decisive penalty. :) Also, don't underestimate how long some people stay out in the void. What is a million years for one player, will be every odd day for another.

I agree on the fuel costs, it's become a pointless gimmick. But as it stands, probe launching is already a gimmick as well, even before it's even released which seems a bit of a shame as it looks like the devs spent some time giving it a bit of depth with gravity/angle etc, but as it stands being a probe sharpshooter or blindly throwing probes won't matter beyond one finishing slighly quicker than the other, and failure being impossible. I would say that to have a probe launching minigame with unlimited attempts, might as well have no minigame at all, just use some scanner on the planet to locate the POis, or fire a single probe and get on with it.

To avoid infinite probes, maybe allow synthesis from fuel?

Synthesis from fuel or synthesis from magic materials is still magic - and for what purpose, mandatory grind? The more I think about it, the more I'm okay with these infinite probes because if we are going to have nonsense magic, I'd prefer it to be grindless.

All you "we need probe inventory management gameplay" people can just take out a piece of paper and track your probe use, and after you hit 100, go down on the planet, shoot some rocks, and then start a new countdown. Easy-peasy :p

I don't have to worry about it, because I'm sending modulated charged plasma packets, which like sonar pings, are infinite.

Buying fuel is cheapened because the fuel is so cheap. If it was 1,000,000 CR per ton people wouldn't buy it very often. As it is fuel is so cheap it might as well be infinite but fuel is not infinite and that adds all sorts of game play... the fuel Rats wouldn't exist without that element (for example).

I made a suggestion on Feature and suggestion request. But here the basis of the idea.

Ok. My idea is you can have 250 probes already made. When you use a probe it takes 5 minutes to have a new probe made. That the Unlimited part. Now your Surface scanner is in a Module 5 slot. you can have up to 1,250 already made probes. This would work for non-Horizon players or Horizon player.

Now You can bypass the 5-minute timer by using common materials. When you run out of 250 probes it will automatically refill up to 150 times if your common materials resource is full. So you can have 37,500 probes.

Or an added idea. Any unclaimed module space could be used for Probe storage but Weight might be a factor.

So you all get your unlimited But you have to wait for them to be made if you run out.

Probe idea Unlimited with drawbacks

I thought I had this all settled, but it must have been in another duplicate thread...

For those hung up on probe numbers, arbitrate yourself a limit and when you reach that number come back. Call it “Iron Probe”.

Otherwise, probes auto-synthesize from one grain of forum salt and a pinch of canopy dust.

You're all way over complicating this.

It's a turd launcher. Infinite supply. How else would you dispose of it. Launch it at a planet.

Turds come from food. Do we have infinite food on our ships? Oh the travesty! The missing gameplay!! The IMMERSION!!!! I'm going to have to start shooting rocks so I can synthesize food to eat.

On a serious note, I would personally find it fun to play "hardcore" exploration mode (which would have to be self-imposed), where I load up my cargo hold with necessary supplies before setting out, and eject them as they are used up. A ton of food cartridges, a ton of coffee, multiple tons of telemetry suites (fancy name for probes - one ton could be 100 probes). Because let's face it, right now infinite probes is the least of our "this game isn't realistic" worries. And massless, volumeless synthesis isn't the answer - but actual cargo would be! Though I'm guessing most of the "I want challenging gameplay" folk ironically would not give up precious jump range to properly pack for a long-term trip...

And yes, all my exploration ships have plenty of cargo space. I really think I might try this someday! :D

I was under the impression that you wanted skill-based gameplay.
Infinite probes isn't skilled, it's 'spray-and-pray'

That why I posted my idea. You still have to keep that skill-based gameplay. The fewer probes you use the better. With probes being slowly being remade.

There is an efficiency bonus which will pay more if you meet or beat the estimated number of probes to fully scan the body.
Thing is most people earn so much will start IGNORING that bonus. Just want to spam Probes.
