Newcomer / Intro How to find docking ports?

Finally i managed to dock .. it took a while .. studying the tutorials of docking a few times .
I practise some more with docking and i hope get a hang to it :)

The keys to many things in Elite are lots of practice in the training and setting up your controls (at the same time) so that you barely need to think about what you have to do.

If you take a break or after an update go back to the training to refresh your skills and ensure that your controls work as expected.

I initially had issues locating the dock on outposts but I realized I was way too close to the station when I requested docking. Now I request docking when I'm just within the max limit for them to approve it. I think its 7.5 km. The further away you are from the outpost the better the chances of seeing exactly where it is. Mail slots and planetary bases are easy. Outposts were a little tricky at first.

So you managed to dock.

For the future:
- you'll have to be the right way round, i.e. you need to be facing towards the control tower and the arows on the pad representation on your scanner should be pointing the same direction as your ship
- you need to lower your landing gear (you'll get a message if you forget that - happens to all of us)
- what occasionally happens is that some ships are extremely sensitive toards the angle against the pad, i.e. you'll need to get the ship parallel to the pad

As for finding the pads - if you don't mond external tools, eddb will show the pad locations on a diagram for each station, e.g. Castellan Station in Lave

Good point ..of knowing of the control tower and arrow direction
Also the database intel can be helpful

Now i do want to go from the current system ..to the SOL system with the free Sidewinder ( i do have some fines open , i was in the way of the docking port )
Let me look what the prerequisites are for this.

Hi,

Outpost and stations ..
I try to land on a outpost with a given landingpath 2, but flying around the outpost, there i see nothing of a landing port colored rectangle
It is timeconsuming to inspect a outpost and difficult to orientate on the outpost object.

Is there a structred approach to find a landingsport with the orange rectangles ?

Pad layout schematics in this thread. Also once locked onto to pad you will see an accurate 3D representation. Finding the correct approach to each pad becomes second nature after a while.

I think i try to play further to the point when i reach Sol to get used to all handling.

Sorry to disappoint you but you can't go to Sol right away. It is a permit-locked system so you can't jump into it without having that permit. The Sol permit is granted upon attaining the rank of Petty Officer in the Federal Navy Reserve.

http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Federal_Navy

... that gives you all the info.

P.S. I used to do clear-saves often so until you start working the engineers there is very little downside to having a fresh-start, progress is much quicker as you know more about how to do things and what to do and what to avoid. (The time required to re-do engineers means I don't do clear-save much any more.)

Thanks
Yes the permit for SOL..i was already aware of that
Ranking in the Federal Navy Reserve is needed and looking at ways to become a petty officer

About the clear save procedure.. engineers is that possible in the "Horizons "gameplay extension of elite ?..don't get it yet what you mean here.

Yes Engineers is a feature of Horizons. The procedures to "unlock" the engineers is quite time-consuming and that is why I won't be doing a "clear-save" so often in future.

Horizons is well worth obtaining, watch for sale-price offers, they appear quite frequently. (There is a confirmed Steam sale from 26th Oct to 1st Nov so maybe then?)

The clear save does exactly what it says on the tin; all progress, credits, rank, mats, ships, the lot - it all goes.

The reason I mentioned is that, say, you cocked up royally when you started but you still only have your sidey and a few credits, a clear save MAY be an option. You just to be aware of what it means.

For 15 euro about, i do see a cheap steam key for Horizons, but it probably better to play a while with the basis elite ?

Don't get it what you exactly mean here, because i am limited in the language and especially in slang words : when it is time to start over ? .. a sidewinder ship and a few credits ..by starting over you get 1000 credits
Suppose i pay the fines in the earlier start, then there is not much credits left
Elite gives also the oppertunity to start over with a sidewinder ship without credits.

Ok, perhaps I'm not being clear.

The clear save is considered a last resort or if you really want to start all over again. Clearing your save - from one of the menu options - gets rid of everything you have done or have and, when you start a new game, you get your free Sidewinder and 1,000 credits. You are a 100% new player all over again.

As I say, it can be considered a very last resort.

I would have done it if I'd found, after a couple of hours of play, I'd been extremely naughty and found myself with lots of fines pending, or wanted by the authorities, or perhaps bounties on my head. An example from my point of view only... You may feel very differently ;)

Hope that makes sense!

Ahaa..i understand :), but i am in the learning stage
Indeed i lost almost my credits ..with two fines
Clearing the game from one of the menu options ..i did not found it yet
I found instead changing a configuration file text ?

At the moment i try to change the cockpit color in a configuration file, but stiill no succes with it, while it are only tags changes
Cannot find the error here ( a earlier hud color chance goes without any problem )

Some comments.

Clear Save an option from the start menu, you start over from the beginning the only things you would still have was anything bought with real money such as Horizons or paint jobs for your ships.

Horizons is worth getting as soon as it is on offer, you get access to everything available on planet surfaces as well as additional ships.

Docking issues, when you dock and enter the hanger the pad is revolved so you face back the way you came to enable an easier departure, when you leave the pad drops down and rotates so as to be available for the next ship except sometimes it doesn't so when you arrive over the pad facing the end where the control buildings are with the large blast deflectors behind you the ship won't lock onto the pad and the image on your display will be the wrong way round. In that rare case you need to turn in place over the pad until your display looks right then touch down.

Docking Computers are very useful when landing heavy freighters at ground bases on worlds with more than 2 gravities, once the gravity gets high your ship has a tendency to fall if it is not horizontal (& the right way up) the docking computer is extremely good at dealing with that.

Think of the start of the game as a huge brick wall. A huge brick wall you keep hitting with your head to break through, it hurts it frustrates and can get you down but and it is a BIG BUT one day pretty soon that brick wall will come down and when it does BOY are you in for some fun.

Just fly around, do the tutorials, get fines, make mistakes lose your credits and blow up your ship. Do all these things at the start with the knowledge IT DOESNT MATTER the ships FREE you’ve only just started and once your confident in the basics wipe your game. You may lose all in game progress but the most important thing is YOU KEEP YOUR KNOWLEDGE everything you have learnt is still in your head, right there ready to be used as you start fresh. The most important advice I think for any new player is STICK TO IT because once you get the knack of it it’s a stunningly beautiful game to play.

(Ps as a disclaimer I feel obligated to say no matter how long you play the game you will still make mistakes, get fines and blow up your ship but that’s all, part of the fun)

Gosh, how long have I been playing now... 3 weeks maybe 4. I've made the mistakes and had a royal laugh at myself for them. Heck once I accidentally activated my hardpoints while sitting on an outpost dock and in a sorta panic thinking I did something wrong I fired my lasers.. hahaha.. Nice time for a fine. Everyday I just try to learn something new even if it's something small. In this short time I've managed to acquire 3 ships and upgrade them all. I've seen 1,000,000 credits in my bank account and I've seen the bulk of that go away either on modules or ship purchases or rebuys. I'm back up a few more credits now, I think around 700k, and the next thing I'm gonna try and learn is the trading game. I have an Adder I'm gonna use for that to get my feet wet and if I like it I'll get a more capable ship. Gotta go find a chaff launcher first because my home system does not sell them. This game is the most fun I've had online in a very long time and each day it amazes me at the level of detail and complexity that I still have to learn. Biggest thing is... have fun.
