∞ probes?

That's absolutely fine, and you may well be right, but you might not.

Maybe you play it and fine some other completely different reason apart from "immersion" that might mean non-infinite may be good. Maybe you don't, you really can't say at this time.

But at least bloody try the thing first before jumping to conclusions, and certainly before we start polls for "how it should be done".

We will continue to agree to disagree then...because you are wrong. ;)

I wish you had more detail Polls. Like infinite probes slower respawn with craftable probes.

Or alternatively probes are generally consumables that act as ammo
but the scanner has a fallback scan mode, to map manually without probes.

That would be the compromise between the extremes and open up for gameplay options,
including existing mechanics and yielding player to player interaction.

Here's an update on the voting numbers. Still only 11% of those who voted are fully opposed to infinite probes, poll now has ~8.4k votes.

Votes or not, if you had done a poll with Pacman back then, the enemies would have been patched out. Nonsense as usual here.

The whole reason we're here is because we got excited about the addition of new gameplay to exploration.

Mining for materials to synthesise probes is more gameplay too. New mining gameplay is a big part of this update too. How "grindy" it would be is just a matter of setting the probe ammo count high enough so it's not a problem. Beta testing would help determine what that number would be.

Making that number infinite, though, means that there can be no gameplay associated with maintaining it.

Arguing for infinite probes is arguing for less gameplay, even though more gameplay is what people were saying they wanted!

I think the argument against that would be, if time is taken to gather materials, that's time not engaged in exploration gameplay.

If the focus of your arguement is gameplay then that goes both ways.

Fundamentally for me I just don't want more forced grind, having infinite or non-infinite probes is an aside in a way, and at this time a pointless discussion. The issue really is the grind in lieu of gameplay.

It's possible the exploration mechanic can have non-infinite probes WITHOUT grind, or could have inifinite probes WITH grind.

Without actually playing it it's difficult to see the big picture.

Precisely. Well said.

I'd like flying a ship in deep space to be a bit of work, not easy mode.

Except weve got people like OA pushing these polls out like they're somehow helpful.
He really gets it in the neck, doesn't he? It amazes me. He must wonder what he's doing wrong, being nice, asking his own viewers their opinions (not demanding anything of Frontier in response btw), making non-toxic or abusive or sweary videos that are popular, and generally being pleasant.

People like him. Barsteward, eh?

It's stating that non horizons players can take part in this CORE new mechanic, it's really simple.

Also, I don't count yet more material gathering for something that is a pre-requisite under the new system to be gameplay anyway... It's just tedious nonsense, people wanting to add a pointless extra grind just because they want "realism", despite the fact that:
A) you need an srv, many explorers might not have one.
B) any number you put on probes is either too low that it becomes totally repetitive just having to stop scanning every tenth planet while you go do yet another material hunt, or too high that it's meaningless anyway.
C) NON HORIZONS PLAYERS CAN'T LAND ON PLANETS (I think that's been mentioned before maybe).
D) for the love of God, fdev have already decided based on their own research into this, let's not go down the ship transfer route again please.

If you want more gameplay from material gathering you have more than enough opportunity already, knock yourself out. Personally, I'd rather that any extra gameplay came from more new, different things to do, rather than yet another rehash of the same thing.

So, count me in for infinite probes, and well done fdev for taking the most sensible decision on this :)

I didn't say that.

But I do think having a community polarized into two camps on a feature, prior to trying that feature, is really not very helpful at all.

And I would have liked to think OA has been around long enough to understand that. I mean he knows polls were removed from the forum because of the issues they caused, but went ahead anyway.

People like OA and other known figures will inevitably get more stick, simply because they have much more sway over the community.

If some noname created a poll and 10 people voted it would be a non-issue.

Here's a fun story;

At my work, we were supposed to be getting new vans. Some head driver guy asked some other drivers (not us) what features would be handy.
One of the features was automatic locking of the side shutter (Tesco van!).
(Previously it was a manual lever inside the cab, that rarely worked)

What we got, was a shutter that locks with the central locking. Brilliant?

No.
Because it means you can't lock the cab while you're serving your customer.

And our new vans have keyless start. So anyone can literally hop in and drive off while we're around the other side... Lol

I had a point somewhere...

I feel sorry for FDev to be honest. They keep trying to reign in some of the worst excesses of the seemingly desperate need some players have for everything to involve some form of grind, presumably because they realise it limits the game's appeal, but it seems there is a cohort that are determined to trash it.

Can someone please post an ‘I played in open for the first time and was ganked... never again’ thread so everyone has something else to get salty over.

This thread has had way more posts than it should have so let’s get back to the low hanging fruit

Eh I wouldn't feel too bad. Frontier did a good job here, and the majority of the critiscms have been about relatively minor stuff.

For the most part the exploration revamp is looking damn fine.

There's a lot of envy about him being one of the seventeen.

NONE OF THOSE PEOPLE HAVE EVEN TRIED THE PROBE MECHANIC!

Their opinion is worth jack-* at this time.

"Congrats to FDEV for choosing the correct option"?? Lol.

FDEV are the only people who've actually tried it.

The criteria for judging whether an implementation is successful, is now by forum vote on polls by people who haven't used the feature their voting on??

How about we judge success by how it plays? Y'know like normal people would?
Just to spell it out to you.

I have not voted on anything.

Only an idiot would make a decision on a feature they haven't actually tried.

It is stupid in the extreme to set your stall out before you've even tried the thing.
Except weve got people like OA pushing these polls out like they're somehow helpful.

And people like StuartGT now announcing it's been proved Frontier chose the correct option!!!

The reasons polls were removed from the forum was because of exactly this sort of thing.

They become propaganda tools to push certain agendas, using the argument that it's accurate data because people were asked, when in fact the data being used is usually, for many reasons, completely worthless. As we have with OAs poll of people who haven't even tried the thing.

You only have to look at the instant transfer poll to see how it plays out when you ask people to vote on game features they haven't tried.
Thank you for the salt over my humble comment :)
