Whats the point of squadrons?

Mabe its just that i play lone wolf and dont want to be part of a gang, but i just dont get it. What do you gain from being part of a squadron?

Now the potential to infiltrate and then betray squadrons seems fun as you would, from what i can tell, be able to see what people in the squadron are upto and then use that info to pick targets.

Is it just comunity management a bit like power play discords but ingame and official so it makes organising stuff and people easier for player groups?

It's a fairly open-ended tool. It has the potential to be useful in a broad range of situations, eg for people on the Distant Worlds 2 expedition.
Imagine how useful it would have been when were trying to coordinate to capture / figure out the Unknown Probes and crack their code.

Speaking for myself I think I have a potentially interesting idea for using it (the idea still a bit half-baked so I want to mull it over a bit more and test some aspects in beta, etc. before discussing)

That's the impression I got, with a league table attached to it. Not sure how I feel about a scoreboard.

Well if you read the blurp from FD... its to bring players together like never before..or some such nonsense.

I see the need or point of them even though I have no intreast in them. The whole scoreboard thing makes me cringe a little, but each to thier own.

Just another "flavour of the month" gimmick like CQC.

Not really.

Now I'm not a group-hug kind of guy but I appreciate that they've left the purpose of a squadron pretty open to interpretation by it's members.
It's all optional, and you can pretty much decide what you want to do with it.

I play alone and so am not that interested but I am sure it will be great for those that have groups of people they play with.

It is just like guilds for almost any mmorpg type game.

I also play alone but I see that I can use a Squadron to summarise the state of a minor faction.
Presumeably I can change that as often as I want and use it to get better info than is provided elsewhere in the game.

indeed, when you pledge your squadron to a faction you have a display panel which summarises all systems where said faction is present.
that is a major improvement for BGS purposes.

Don’t forget the carrier thingy ( though we did not seen yet that one)

Mobile base of operation... at least for those who coop

The point is I get to build a squadron of people who are respectful and nice to play with, and are effective in their roles too! We accomplish goals together. There's a great sense of satisfaction in overcoming something with friends, I too am mostly a lone wolf kind of player, but I tell ya there's nothing like getting to know a group of people then slaying a monster together (in the figurative sense). Honestly. It doesn't need to happen often, once a week is fine for a big group session, and the knowledge sharing in these kinds of groups leads to accelerated learning of the game, too, it's really upsides all round if done right. :)

I think squadrons will be a nice tool for like-minded people to get together and engage in cooperative/competitive/antagonistic gameplay using only ingame tools. Lots of potential for RPers too.

I agree :)

The shared bookmarks seems like a nice feature too - not sure if these include planetary bookmarks yet which would be even better for racing guilds, I mean squadrons.

Hmmm... I feel like some seal clubbing today. Hop into my GankDeLance, go into the squadrons screen... yep. Select both "PvE" and "Roleplay", and wait for sucke... er fellow players to invite me. I think my evening's all set up to deliver some emergent content.

I don't think they were ever intended to be anything more than a co-ordination tool for the player groups we already have formed using out of game tools.
A lot of groups already talk via discord and have friended each other in game, that just formalises that.

For me the disappointment is single squadron only, FDev had a chance to break the mould of solo 'guilds' and have ignored that a lot fo the player base wear many hats. I'm sure there are plenty of Hutton truckers who also are fuel rats, or fuel rats who want to go on DW2. It would have been great to use the in game tools to do both of these (or more than 2) at the same time. Now assuming DW2 make a squadron for the trip you'll have to leave your current one on carry on using external tools.

In all fairness that's a pretty bad example... if you're in DW2 that's all you're going to be doing for a new months. However the fuel rat and hutton trucker example is a very good one. I'm kinda surprised at the limit myself.
