I used to swim everyday as my primary keep fit thing, the time you spend swimming to get a decent workout increases until it gets to be boring. Buy waterproof earphones and player if you take it up regularly and stick radio 4 comedies in it.

First time you do it remember the back float where you just flop and twiddle your hands&feet to move slowly do that if you get knackered for a bit without actually stopping.

Avoid the express swimming lane if there is one, its full of the swimming equivalent of audi drivers and you'll want to drown them.

You won't have forgotten how to swim, but if you've not done it for a while you will find it very tiring. Start slow.

I already felt this boredom.

However, in this case I think a lot of things of my personal life in my head during those moments.

Swimming's like riding a bike, once you've done it you don't ever forget.

For returning swimmers it's the stamina that's the issue.

I've seen very good swimmers (as kids) get in the pool after a 15 year hiatus, and within weeks they're overtaking most other people, they have not lost the "skill" of it.

I've seen people who are utterly awful runners outswim everyone in the pool, I think some people just have a talent for it. In a pool it's a case of skill trumps strength.

Breast stroke is pretty straightforward, it's predominantly kick and you can build enough stamina to be doing endless lengths until you're bored reasonably quickly.

Front crawl is a bit different, if you're wanting to get properly fit front crawl is where it's at IMHO, but it does take a bit of getting used to.

There is no other movement a human being does that's like front crawl, it is quite unnatural, and throw in that the movement restricts your breathing and your brain can easily go into a sort of "panic mode" if you're not used to it, stopping you even getting more that a couple of lengths out.

As like with most things though, persist and it all falls into place.

Swimming is awesome!

And if it grabs you and you want to take it a bit further you could move into open water swimming.

Last one I did I was stood next to this old lass during the warm up, turned out she was the oldest person there at 78, swimming in outdoors in Salford docks... at 78. :)

And from there you can even extend it into holidays, so you could either do a week's swim training with people of similar level, or go spend a week swimming round some Greek islands.

One important thing is to be relax in the water. And it is better to make less movements and to move forward a lot, than to make a lot of movements and to move forward little.

Well I go off tomorrow morning.

Weather is freezing here in blighty now, so I suspect I'm gonna' be in that heated pool all week!

To be frank, you should float.

:D

They all float down here.
