Black Holes

You panic you have no idea what's going on, the pull is stronger now, you try to go into sc or hyperspace but your Mass locked! Oh no! Then faster and faster until you're sucked into the dark abyss and...

You exit somewhere near the other side of the Galaxy :)

Who knows?

Still no reason why something can't orbit a blackhole or capture a wandering blackhole, They can be of all sizes, they don't all have to be huge.

While i'm sure quite rare, it would be cool to visit a system with a black hole.
Nothing than a stronger black hole can capture it, maybe it's the other way around and it will start destroying matter.

Btw I agree with you, the first thing I'd do is to fly right inside a black hole, but problem is again, in the game you need to simulate the laws of physics wich would probably melt the cpu and takes months to decide what to do with your ship after you get close enough. So we go back to the cosmetic option. You see the black hole but it's just a backdrop and if you pass the line you just get destroyed, end of the journey you'll respawn at a starport.

Sagittarius A* (the black hole at the galactic core) is in the game but it's a bit of a trek at 25,000 LY, or thereabouts

There are cases of binary system where the light we receive from a star orbiting a black hole (so we observe the past) shows orbiting stars. In eons the star would inevitably be pulled and assimilated by the black hole increasing his mass. Supermassive black holes aren't (theorically) to be considered massive as in size but in mass still condensed in a space not bigger than a golf ball. That's what creates the singularity and the event horizon is believed to be the edge of the space/time stretched at wich point we cannot see because light (or time) can't give us informations about what's beyond it because it will take an infinite amount of time to escape so it will never happen. It's theory of course. There are cases of 2 black holes interacting and orbiting and they'll form a unique one when the weaker one will be absorbed. Black holes or neutron stars or pulsars may have orbiting bodies formed due to the residue of the implosion compacted by gravity during the revolution just like the solar system formed billions of years ago. If it's a black hole it will inevitably eat everything inside the escape requirements, which are insanely high.

The singularity itself is tiny yes, but for all intents and purposes the event horizon is the 'edge' of it and outside the EH the laws of physics still hold and the black hole can for the most part be treated as a Newtonian object.

How FD will work the handwavium tech of the FSD (which is essentially FTL) into this I don't know but I expect black holes will simply be star like spheres (representing the event horizon) with cool light bending visual effects that we cant approach too close without dropping from FSD. The point I was making was that it should indeed possible to have things orbit a black hole, even if the orbit will eventually decay it will take so long as to not make a difference in game terms.

yes and It will be extremely fascinating to be near one just to see the plasma jets of a quasar or the light bending around the abyss. It's extremely fascinating.

An isolated black hole would be a rather dull object, you would see it just as a gravitational lense if being really close. Even a black hole that contains 10 times the mass of our sun would have an event horizon that has just a diameter of about 30 kilometers, it's a tiny object in astronomical terms.

On the other hand, a black hole that is part of a complex system should have an glowing accretion disc swirling around it, with jets shooting out from the middle of the plane. That should be spectacular to behold.

Here is a nice video that gives you an idea how a black hole could look like, and what would happen if you decide to fly into it.

I think most people misunderstand the size of stellar black holes. Yes they are massive (they have lots of mass) but they are also tiny. The biggest stellar black holes are about 30 solar masses and have an event horizon of about 100km.

If the white dwarfs we have in game now are anything to go by then at the closest you can get to a black hole it would be less than a pixel in size.

Super massive black holes are different but there is only one of them in the galaxy and I doubt you will be able to visit it.

Edit: Ninjaed by the Frog.

It's not like our ships are affected by gravity in normal flight anyways, and even when masslocked by a celestial body, you can still supercruise in the escape vector.

I have a feeling, that unless the masslock radius is going to be decreased (which it will), black holes are going to be pretty disappointing...

This guy gets it... also Neutron Stars the next step up (or is it down) on this scale are only about 25-50 miles across yet the have the pull of very large stars. As it has been stated only the largest (think center of the galaxy type) black holes can be approached to a relative proximity to the event horizon and in the most extreme cases you could even cross it and travel quite some distance before tidal gravitational forces start to pull you apart atom by atom... It is more than likely that your ship would be destroyed on the way to the object by the extreme heat and pressure long before you reach the event horizon. And that is assuming a perfectly stable non charged non spinning black hole. In others you have to deal with extreme x-ray bursts, being pelted by matter spinning inward in the accretion disk, or extreme electricity and charged particles being emitted.

In short black holes are not the sort of place you want to take your family on a picnic...

Sheesh.. it was just a bit of afternoon light Australian humor. (Thankfully a few people got it ;) )

I actually post genuine questions in the Elite Beta Discussion section. "!"

If you come across something that annoys you perhaps you could just keep moving.
Just a suggestion.

sorry if my exclamation point upset you.. was just informing you that there are threads discussing this topic already, never said your post wasnt genuine. did you even get past that first sentence? because you didnt respond to my actual question

all this talk an no pics of the black wholes?

I feel like there's a new thread every day asking if black holes will be in game.. Use the search bar before asking! And as cool as a black hole sounds, would you REALLY want them in the game? You're flying towards a planet loaded up with a million credits worth of goods, all the sudden your screens/equipment start to malfunction and your ship starts to pull Ina direction you're not flying. You panic you have no idea what's going on, the pull is stronger now, you try to go into sc or hyperspace but your Mass locked! Oh no! Then faster and faster until you're sucked into the dark abyss and it's back to square one..

That sounds terrifyingly awesome... So yep!

Apparently so was the OP's ex-girlfriend....! Da-Dum_Chhhhh!

LMAO!!! Excellent work Sir.

Nope, your exclamation mark was devastating to me. So much in fact i had to see my therapist about it.
When I told him your name he explained to me what was going on. :p

All jokes aside, this is not my first rodeo. I've been running PHP Forums myself since the 90's so I do know about the search function (and nettiquette).
I think you misunderstood me again, I'm the one who said my post wasn't genuine (actually good friends with my Ex ;)).

From my experience Space trading games lure peoples with a higher than average intellect. Yes this includes you.

Where there are great minds, great humour follows.

Just trying to have some laughs mate, with great success I might add.
Please join us laughing, so much more fun than getting butthurt.

And in answer to your question, I actually don't care if there are black holes.
I love this game so far, and have faith in the Devs. If they implement them I'm sure it will be for good reason, even if it's just for some interesting stories.
;)

Hyp3rion, i ment the one in game. How come we've been talking this much and there is no one posting the picture of it
