The Grind for Combat Rank...

I reached Elite Combat as a side effect of training up my first NPC crew.

I reached Elite in Trade as a side effect of running smuggling missions to help my chosen BGS factions.

I will reach Elite in Exploration when 3.3 drops as a side effect of actually exploring.

If they play enough, everyone will eventually reach the Elite targets; the skill bar for all three are pretty achievable. I focused on them specifically when I started for reasons that were important to me at the time :)

I've been defending systems by fighting Thargoid scouts and I'm about to hit Elite as a result. I'm slightly embarrassed about this as I'm not really a good combat pilot, just an efficient one. Set target for the four AX turrets, press fire, reverse a bit until the target blows up, repeat! But really, all the Elite ranks are for playing efficiently, not gitting gud. I don't think there's a serious grind for any.

Do AX turrets actually work as turrets without multi-crew?

is really turning me off from bothering with Combat. Your only choice is to take on harder and harder ships and then, even if you win, you get a percentage point or two. I get that the point is to make it a timely challenge last everyone become Elite, but still... it could take a casual like me a decade to get there.

If you don't actually like combat then what difference would it make?

If you do like combat then you'll get there soon enough. It's not a race.

Combat rank will be easier soon when the new bgs Thargoid zones appear because you won't have to continually search the signal sources. The new zones will continue to spawn goids in waves so you should be able to stay there for a good while before going to repair.

Just don't ever grind. Try not to care about becoming ---- ELITE ----.

Play and enjoy the game.

If you can afford it, get VR - I bought an Oculus Rift at the start of September and I've gone up +32% in my Dangerous rank. It's amazing - like being in a movie - highly recommended!

I can relate. Not interested in elite but want dangerous (iirc) to unlock Lori for the G4 lightweight life support.
First one or two kills are OK, then it gets very repetitive. And cos I'm rubbish at it, it's either fish in a barrel with my shield tank, or I'm the fish....no on between.

But I do enjoy the combat, I'm just absolutely miserable at it. I made a thread regarding such a few months ago, and I still get murdered in low Res sites by a single opposing ship. Its just not something I can grasp. I dont mind combating but my main goal right now is to unlock the Engineer ?Broo? And when two hours have passed and I see I've gone up 7 percent against ships that can easily kill me.........

Probably preaching to the converted, but a quick few questions:

  • Do you keep your speed in the blue zone?
  • Do you use flight assist off?

If not, definitely practice using these.FA Off is an art form - depending on the size of the ship you attack, if you FA Off at the right point, you can get to turn on them and broad-side them which makes your odds better.

Killing "Elite" opponents is the quickest way to increase combat rank. FYI it takes a bit over 1633 "Elite" kills to go from 0% Deadly to Elite. Join the AXI Discord server: https://discord.gg/EcJUcP

Killing aliens is very satisfying and this way you do not have to sort through human opponents to find Elite WANTED CMDRs worth killing. All Thargoids are considered "Elite" opponents but the small scouts are the easiest to kill, being smaller, weaker than their larger cousins the flower-ships and fairly predictable in their patterns. Each week, AXI Discord posts a list of two or three systems that are being invaded by Thargoid Flower ships and Thargoid Scouts. I am currently only 229 (+/-) Elite kills from achieving triple-Elite status. Scouts are found in groups of two, four or eight and are found in Threat 3 and 4 Non-Human USS. I set a new, personal, single sortie record this morning of 72 Thargoid Scouts killed in about an hour while losing only 12% of my shields, using a hull-tank Krait Mk. II with three size 3 turret AX MC and two size 2 beam lasers. o7

I have always thought that not only should your combat rank increase proportionally to the combat rank of the NPCs, but also the ship you are flying. For example, if you are in your fully engineered Cutter and kill an NPC Elite Cutter, you get an increase of 0.2%. But if you are in a Courier and kill the same NPC Elite Cutter, you should be rewarded more, say an increase of 0.8% or even 1%. Give the players the option of taking small or even medium ships where still will come to play and reward them accordingly.

I actually didn't mind the combat rank when I started almost 2 years ago, wasn't as easy as it is now.

I still go out and take out every wanted NPC I see or interdicts me, I still like it some tens of thousands kills later.

Trading elite wasn't too bad but not a favorite (done w/o a Cutter), but exploration nearly melted my eyes. I don't even carry any exploration gear in any of my ships.

Letting in happen just playing is probably the best way to go about it.

My current plan is to simply leave combat as a party mode for the game, and only attempt it when my friends are online and want to kill.

As far as flight assist... one of those friends was actually just trying to help me figure it out last night. I cant even find how to toggle it, let alone tell if it is even on or off lol.

I found the fastest way to Elite in combat was the previously mention 'compromised nav beacons', or CNB. And there isn't really a shortcut.. I got mine in 8500 kills ? Something close to that. I hung out at that CNB for a few weeks to get the last half of Deadly to Elite.

CNB's are filled with tons of elite Eagles, Sideys, and other smaller ships. But there isn't some special status for reaching Elite in combat. Whole Lotta Nuthin' , really. Elite in any rank will get Founders World. I really hate the 'just play the game and you'll get there' mantra.... But after your first Elite ( Trade is pretty easy now, Explorer even easier ), the others are just frosting.

If you enjoy combat but feel you are miserable at it, watch tutorial videos and learn the vitally important maneuvering, spatial awareness, and radar reading skills. I am a 53-year-old housewife who sucked at combat at first, but got much better after repeatedly watching Vindicator Jones' videos, whilst eating ice cream. Ice cream is a great motivator. It's the ship positioning that's important, the firing bit is an afterthought.

Also, you may consider doing CQC arena Deathmatch. You will get slaughtered at first, but your brain will learn despite your ego being decimated. There is no rebuy. When I first started I mostly crashed into buildings and spun. However, now I am actually flying mostly FA off, and still crashing into buildings and spinning. It's fun!

CQC will teach you the necessity of pip management. Make sure those bindings are second nature to you.

You can do it!

Knowledge of key bindings and figuring out which tasks require the most immediate application or closest access to is also essential for combat. It's all about hand-eye-mouse-keyboard-controller coordination. There must be videos on how to do this. In the Options part of the Menu, you will be able to rebind tasks according to your preference. Its like rearranging your closet so that the stuff you use most is more easily accessible. There is an option to either toggle or hold Flight assist in the Options menu, there is a little plus sign next to it. Then in game go to the right hand panel and then to the last panel which I think is called "functions" and you can turn flight assist on or off, too. I personally have it bound to my joystick because I use it a lot.

Does that mean I get to have some Ice cream too??

Send it via the interwebtubes. Hehehehe
