Frontier, can we PLEASE have a new Exploration ship now?

I can also go from Detroit to New York in a Plane, Car or bicycle. Which will get me there faster so I can start doing what i need in comfort and a respectable amount of time?

Gary

Okay, you can go by foot, bicycle, car or plane, each one will take a different amount of time to reach the same destination...

But which one is more likely to allow you to see more stuff and maybe find more interesting places along the way?

All depends. If I have a specific goal on mind, I'll cater to the method that best suits it. What the point I'm trying to make is that most of the time, people jump (max jump range) to their destination and then go economical which I call "Sidewinder Mode".

All depends on play style.

indeed combat is all dominant

Peopla keep saying this like if it was established fact, but the only source of data we have access to, the station player traffic reports, have always indicated otherwise. We should see piles of FDLs, FAS, Vultures, Corvettes, Chieftains, etc, but yet what we actually see in the vast majority of stations is piles of Pythons, AspX's, Anacondas, Cobras, Kraits, etc.

Perfect example, I'm the exact opposite, I go eco then Max jump to the far reaches

indeed but i mean the combat 'ethos' is stronger in game. eg, 'multirole' seldom includes exploration. and python, asp, conda and krait are all very capable in combat although being multirole. before engineers we even had 'python' vs 'fdl' threads which people took very seriously (i didn't, but it just illustrates that combat is the most considered and cared for activity in the spectrum).

Here's an Explorer Ship done proper:

Turner Class (from FFE)
Large Size

Core:
Powerplant - 7 or 8
Thrusters - 8
FSD - 8
Life Support - 6
Power Distro - 7
Sensors - 8
Fuel - 6

Internals:
1 Class 8
1 Class 7
2 Class 6
2/3 Class 5
2 Class 1 (or whatever required for new scanners)

Utilities: 5/6

Hardpoints:
1 Huge
2 Large
4 Medium

Make it look like an updated version of the Argent's Quest, make the cockpit a "ball" such that it sits both above and below the plane of the ship, and has a transparent bottom and top, and top supercruise agility.

That sounds like the Discovery from Buck Rogers!

*snip* make the cockpit a "ball" such that it sits both above and below the plane of the ship, and has a transparent bottom and top, *snip*

Module numbers/sizes and jump range are always up for argument discussion but would any explorer really say no to near 360 degree visibility* in their explorer build. An almost unobstructed view within a near sphere would be almost perfect.....and possibly the kind of ship those swanky Imperial designers would come up with. It's a yes (please) from me.

*I'm thinking why not steal from nature and go with a cockpit structure like the one pictured and have the ships bulk some distance behind.

Wanted exploration ship

-Ship with A rated FSD at 50 without engineering.
-Size 7 Slot (preferably restricted to fuel scoop.
-Shield capable without having to take fuel slot.
-8 Utility Slots
-11 Module Slots (1x7, 2x5 (SLF capable), 2x4, 2x2, 5x1
-Power Plant able to run all power guzzling gizmos.
-Meh Power Distributed
-300 speed un engineered
-nice sensor.

What dedicated explorer ships need is some non-violent way to defend themselves. I always laugh quietly when I see people suggesting that explorers arm themselves to the teeth in order to enjoy what they really enjoy doing - exploration.

Those same powerful scanners can be modified and turned around to scramble communications, target locking or anything else that may deter a combat ship from making the kill. At least long enough for the explorer to escape.

This also gives exploration ships an alternative career path once they re-enter the bubble. A viable profession as a vessel geared for information warfare.

Well then ... it actually appears Frontier listened and gave us what we wanted.

Every indication is that the currently being tested Krait Phantom is a VERY good exploration ship, trading one weapon hard point and some optional internal sizes for greater flying speed and significantly better jump range due to it's very low hull mass. Let's hope it stays as is and they don't suddenly nerf it for random reasons.

But still .. thank you, Frontier!

By all accounts it does seem to be a decent step between an AspX and Anaconda. I like taking the ana out into the black but I really miss the maneuverability and cockpit view of the AspX. Looking forward to buying one once it comes out of beta!

I think an exploration ship needs two power plant slots to enable power plant repair in the black. Either split the current slot to hold two half size reactors or allow an optional internals slot to hold a new “auxiliary” generator module capable or powering an AFMU during power plant repairs.

The Krait P. should fill that role.
