Being in the best place its ever been is not a compliment with Engineering.
It is still an utterly trash system which has done permanent damage to Elite.
If they "whoopsied" and removed the entirety of engineering the game would be in an even better place.
If they could go back in time and not waste years implementing and tweaking the system in the first place Elite would be in a much better place.

Break down to which game are we playing here I think.
A standard WoW clone like SWTOR (think MMO) would be severely unbalanced in its little stupid PvP instanced encounters. .... if featuring actual LEGACIES!
Featuring power, "possessed" and accessible by - a few.
Not so in Elite.
Sammarco, reimagine balance - featured by Frontier, made sure the average engineering was in par with the ship builds and in almost all but the rarest(lucky) builds up to the power level wielded earlier.
Any supposed Überwaffe has its counter in any well engineered ship.
My Über ClIPPER fore examples does no damage compared to the META, Aashenfox would laugh even more - his/her off if I would start shooting at him/her. Little does he/she know.

Now think about context.
Forced conversion would probably be the wrong way to go - A suitable balanced compromise might be to, just nerf the weapon damage of weapons, and the integrity of upgrades. Make it so the older kit is balanced properly against the new balance benchmarks. Alternatively (or additionally), introduce random malfunctions for the grandfathered engineered kit.

Your opposition to this change doesn't make any sense, and as far as I can tell it doesn't even affect you.

How about "for every day a grandfathered item is equipped on your active ship, increase its chance to malfunction by 0.1%"?
The effect will be insignificant at first but people continuing to use grandfathered items in six months from now will be getting annoyed by the unreliability.
That's not how context works.
I don't oppose a balancing pass, I just think its of very low importance and have no idea why the people bothered by it don't just ditch their own grandfathered stuff and pressurize other PVP'ers to do the same.
A self generated solution rather than screeching for FDEV to save you from your own grind inflicted over reliance on unnecessary min-max gear.
1. God rolls often took a ridiculous amount of rolls to appear (because you wouldn't just look for the heat reduction secondary, but the 40% heat reduction secondary on top of god roll stats from the main mod).
2. Not everyone who plays, did play the game at all then.
3. We could reverse the situation, remove the grandfathered advantage entirely, and say "Suck it Up!" to those who would complain about losing their now unobtainable uber guns.

Speaking as a PS4 user, It disappoints me knowing that there are weapons / / shields out there that I'm denied the option of using or even ever had the opportunity to get.
The PS4 was a late comer to the world of elite and all those users through no fault of their own have to settle for weaker less powerful, less usable option's. Come on FDev, level the playing field !
