Who would sell their soul to actually live in the Elite Dangerous Universe (IRL)

Authorities would kill you, your innocent passengers and their dogs just for having a criminal on board. The world is just too gamey and whacky to even remotely consider it as a world to live in.

It's not too gamey or wackey. There are some gamey elements, but apart from that it's pretty plausible.

When we have space legs there could be a ship boarding event by station security to apprehend the passenger.

You know what....im pretty sure most of the replies on here are because people are just reading the title and then replying.

I will state again......im not saying living in a univers exactly like ED where you are stuck in a chair, not able to walk, eat and etc with all the limitations of what ED has. Im talking about the ED universe where you have the opportunity to have a ship and visit other star systems, other planets etc.

come on people open your minds and think about it before you start saying things like "being killed for illegally parking" or "being stuck in a seat and not landing on ELW" thats a game limitation not a real life limitation.

take away the "Game" and live in the ED universe. Now thats the question....

While the seat-thing is just being silly in terms of your topic, the illegal parking thing IS part of the universe. Life is suuuuper cheap in the 3300s. Pilots seem to have it better than most of the station monkeys, but we're also funded and protected by a secret organization that supersedes all existing governments. We're a paramilitary mercenary force operating on our own discretion, causing wars and famines so we can be profiteers in those disasters.

Eliteverse is not a nice place to live depending on where you end up in society. You can talk about tech advances all you want but you have to have a pick of where you end up classwise or it's no dice. Don't get into debt in the Empire or end up a slave. Don't get into debt in the Federation, or you'll end up conscripted into the military. Make sure you're not kidnapped by pirates and turned into an unregulated slave, or you're just killed by space raiders while on vacation. As has been mentioned, a lot of the food is shape-replicated processed algae. Political control of your home can flip at the whim of a stranger.

It's a dystopia ruled by corporations, political power blocs (who also do the whole war-but-not thing even inside their own superpower) and shadow groups, using civil strife as a management tool. Oh yeah, alien invasion, which wouldn't likely just happen on Thursdays.

How is 'being killed for illegally parking' 'the game' and not 'the universe'? The entire Elite lore is drenched with dark, disgusting, dystopian crap. It is a terrible place to be. People who say they like it are probably the same people would would 'love to live in the authentic middle ages'.

No, no you wouldn't. Your life would be short, miserable and pointless. And unlike with a game, there is no patch, re-balance or customer service to fix it.

Stating the obvious here - People become idiotic when they are playing games. Gaming is mean't to be an escape from normal life, I don't do 120mph in a 20 zone, park sideways across the only 4 parking spots available, beat the crap out of a passerby just because I can.

The weirder rules 'Like execution for parking illegally' is not down to ED lore (Could be wrong here) it is because many cmdrs would just hang around doing stupid stuff at stations.

Remember Cmdr itchy, his sole aim was to highlight all the extreme game breaking things that could be done. Many changes have been made because of him.

But the novels paint a pretty dire picture of how strict traffic control and security is. It could be influenced by the game, but in the end the lore definitely underscores this.

Oh really? I should give them a read.

Quality varies a bit to be honest. Some of them really read as if they were pre-written generic sci-fi novels with some ED stuff sprinkled on top afterwards, whereas others a pretty much dedicated to the ED universe (e.g. Elite Legacy by Michael Brookes).

The sad reality is that a lot of people trick themselves into believing virtual worlds and other realities are greater than their own. There's a very real world out there to appreciate, yet some people tend to appreciate the idea of one more than the actual world they can explore.

If you give me a private Beluga Liner loaded with goods and Aisling Duval as my companion, I'm game. I would set a course to the longest unknown ever... [yesnod]

...yeah, time to crack up another bottle of Leestian evil juice... - no, for real, very tempting idea TBH!. [up]

you would be hunted by all those weebs trying to retrieve their waifu.

That's a passionate plea considering the question is pure fantasy. If you want to live on a ship and visit other "worlds", join the Navy, see the world! If it has to be Space, join the Navy, become a fighter pilot, get picked up by NASA, and go to Mars someday. Or just pay Elon Musk a ton of money to ride his "Spaceship".

This whole thread is filled with people imagining they can live in an imaginary world, and getting upset that others don't take their version of this imaginary world seriously enough. Just play the game [wacko]

With how surreal the last year has been in comparison to those before it, I'm not entirely sure I have a soul to sell any longer.

So why the **** not!

join the Navy, become a fighter pilot, get picked up by NASA,

Easier said than done Duck.

Though many people might be psychologically suited to and have the mindset capble of, but achieving either of those things are very remote.

Do we not play this game because we like the idea of living in a universe where humankind managed to conquer the stars?

I don't even know what life looks like in ED. I've yet to get out of my cockpit chair in four years. No idea whatsoever what living conditions are, what cities look like, houses, apartments, stores, personal vehicles, even my own ship which I spend all my time in. I haven't even seen a toilet in four years.

People like to have a fantasy. The real world is very much depressive, work, family, putting up with other people.
Games are an escape. And sometimes this escape, tries hard to be a reality in minds of people.
Why not?
In ED, I’m master of my own ship. I don’t give a biowaste about bosses. I don’t need to play politics. I live on my ship, I am my own master. I go where I choose, I give my loyalty to whom I choose. If I don’t like Trump, I’ll blow his ships away in the black and make sure he looses his influence.
There has been a week of cults and their affect on society on the discovery channel in my country. And I can’t help but draw comparisons between these and the virtual realities games present to people.

It’s a Saturday night for me. And i’m on my 5th beer, at a pub, by myself watching the Chelsea Tottenham game. Would I rather be on the bridge of my Python with the same beer in my hand, watching coronal flares off a star.. hmm...

Indeed I can't deny some of the parts of elite simply do not make sense but I wish the real world had the same opportunities to become a billionaire in real life and without risking much to do it..... You don't even have to screw anyone over just do some low level legal deliveries to get a mining cobra then go mining in a quiet part of the world or do the rares trading route.
Within a few weeks of your alternative life you would be set for life

Being the Lady of Shallott is a popular lifestyle choice these days.

There was a kid, can't remember exactly, 13 or 14 years old who committed suicide so he could be with his love..... A WOW or some such fantasy RPG character who had died.
Not sure what the answer is really. I am absolutely all for getting immersed into a game I am playing and am prone to the odd flights of fantasy about..... What if?...... But there are people out there who sadly lose grip on reality
