Used Shipyard

Okay so here is my issue. I have a fully A rated and engineered Clipper that I just hate. No matter what setup or what I try to use it for I just cannot bring myself to like it. I would sell it but I dont want to waste the time, money and mats invested or the purchased paint pack.

I propose FD assign a reasonable value to it based on all of the above and let me sell it to another player "as is" at a used shipyard.

I have a lot of time and money invested and just want it to go to a good home! Am I being unreasonable?

Not a bad idea, but think it's never gonna happen here mate. If you fallow MMO genre, you'd know the P2P transactions of in-game items opens up a pandora box of in-game and out-of-the-game abuses. It's doable for sure, many main stream MMOs are having P2P market places, but I don't think Frontier is willing to invest it's dev time to put all the boundaries for such feature not to ruin in-game economy. Personally I'd prefer their dev time would be invested elsewhere.

Shame you don't like Clipper. It's a great ship!! Was flying one for almost two years before jumped into one of the real big boyz out there. It looks great and you can do literally anything you like with it, as for it's segment of ships that is.

Apart from the not inconsiderable pandoras box that Gaarp mentions, I'd also point out that "Reasonable Value" is an anagram of "Hotel California".

(You already can sell your ships and modules for a very reasonable value, IMHO. Albeit not to another player).

I was thinking I could consign it to a used shipyard and then I wouldn't even know who bought it. That would eliminate the explotation of the P2P economy.

I think the problem with this is, ships just aren't that expensive. It's not hard to get new ships, so the need for used ones isn't there.

An engineered Clipper is doubly unlikely to be able to be sold on a used ship market (even if there was one) as there are at least two "locks" on it - the Imperial rank requirement to be able to buy a Clipper in the first place and the unlock requirements for each of the Engineers employed in its Engineering.

Every player requires to earn these for themself, at this time - and Frontier haven't chosen to make materials or data available for credits either - so gathering those for Engineering is a requirement too.

Yeah but (pre-engineered).

I think this is also your main point? Not so much about the money for the ship itself, but for the time and materials you put into engineering? I get where you are coming from. It feels wrong that a fully engineered ship sells for the same amount as an un-engineered one, but I just always store them away if I don't like them.
There might be a role for that particular ship in the future. In the meantime, I just use the transferrable engineered parts on other ships.

Actually, if you want to keep things to some level of realism, a modded ship should be worth less than an unmodded one. I mean who wants to buy a car that someone else has been screwing with? An unmodified anything is usually worth more than a modified one, and even if it's something that's really nice that the modifications actually make it worth more, it's almost never worth what you actually put into it!

You are correct that even a certified OEM top tier god level mechanic can do modifications to a car, sign-off the work and the value still decreases as it's not standard even though it's probably above the quality level of the OEM manufacturer simply because it's not stock and people don't like the risk and lack of warranty. However, I wouldn't really compare modifications in Elite to cars.
Elites engineering is a demonstrable clear cut performance improvement that's stable and has zero chance of going wrong. Modified cars decline in value because of the increase in risk of mechanical failure, wear on components that were not upgraded and insurance costs as well as a few other things. Elite's engineering has none of these downsides and all of the upsides.

As for topic at hand, nice idea, minefield to implement. Easier for the Devs to not include it rather than run the gauntlet of all the things that can go wrong.

I’m not terribly fond of my Cutter or Clipper either.
But I’m not interested in selling them either. They’re part of my collection.

And I agree, Player-to-Player sales is a 55 gallon drum of worms best unopened. There are simply too many scumbags in the world.

I guess I get it. She is a fine ship though. Requiring the rank grind is silly mechanics. Wouldnt it be cool to see your old ships flying around in deep though.

I say if they only let NPC buy it I would be ok. Otherwise. Gold sellers would be using this to buy and sell ships.

So you strip the ship, store the engineered modules to use for something else, and sell the basic ship. All you are left with is a second hand paint pack.

I don't think anyone would want a slightly used paint pack, would you? [big grin]

Okay I am not sure I understand how this could be exploited if you dont know who the buyer is. It could even be a mechanic in itself.
Buy Ship
Grind Mats
Engineer
Sell for slightly more money.

I get that FD loves making everyone grind but this isnt like a player driven economy. What does the stupid grind mean anyway? I see a CMDR in an engineerd ship so I know he drove around on a planet and ran some faction missions. Whoopde sh*t.

It's a nice idea, but given we get our money back from (non engineered) modules and most of our money from the ship, I can't really see this being a big thing.

E.g. if I can get 100% of modules and 90% of ship money back when I sell, why would I sell to you for less 100% of the full purchase price? And why would you buy?

Sorry, I don't see it happening, but it is a cute idea.
