Community Event / Creation Announcing SpeedBowl 2 - Bombelli Or Bust! 8./9. December 3304

Added to the FAQ:
Q: Do I HAVE to start between 1.4 and 1.6 Mm?
A: It is recommended by experience. But you CAN start from farther away or from closer by. It will probably either slow you down or make it a lot harded, though.

Reasoning: If you start too far, you'll be level for so long that you are slower than on the optimal curve. And closing in means you have such a steep dive that we'll be impressed if you survive anyway. The distances given are our recommendation and seem to produce best results for a wide variety of ships when proper technique is applied.

Important rules update

5) Finish line is the towers of Bombelli Prospect, with a maximum altitude of 1000 m! Distance to Bombelli on the target display has to be 2000 m or less! (Up from 1000 m)

Explanation

Over the course of the last week we have followed training runs, watched footage and jumped into livestreams to help CMDRs who are struggling with the concept. As it turns out, getting runs on target is a lot harder than we anticipated from our own experience. Based on further feedback from veterans of SpeedBowl I, we decided that we had to make a rule change, and we had to make it now, with still two weeks to go.

We had several options, including removing the fixed goalposts altogether and instituting a penalty system instead - while very tempting, sorting out the balancing on that one would be a nightmare. Therefore, we are keeping a "hard" target box over Bombelli.

From what we have seen, the altitude limit is far less of an issue and provides a huge kick of excitement to bowlers and onlookers alike. So the limit remains at 1000 m or less. If you have problems getting that right, jump into our Discord, there is always someone online to help - believe us when we say, "you can do this". It's a matter of judging rate of descent and knowing your ship and thruster capabilities.

However, actually getting over Bombelli is a huge issue for a lot of CMDRs. We want to make this a little bit easier for you, while still having this event end over the base. In addition to that, I may, or may not, have miscalculated the sensor distance at altitude. So, we are officially increasing the sensor readout for the finish line screenshot to 2000 m from Bombelli. Trust us, it's far from easy mode, but significantly less impossible.

We want everybody to have a good chance to get on the leaderboard with vaild submissions, however we also want to point out that this is, still, a degree of ship control underestimated by pretty much everyone on their first attempts. So, do not be discouraged if your first couple of runs end up wildly off course. You will need several tries to get it all sorted out. But this change of rules should hopefully lead to more CMDRs getting a good submission on the board.

As always, fly fast and o7,

As someone who's now failed 5 times to hit the target altitude while simultaneously doing so within 1000m of the base I approve this change. I haven't yet even survived a sub-1km 4000m/s run but am now confident I can do so and agree that, by keeping the goalpost that low you've kept those final moments a truly thrilling and challenging experience. I'll second Primetime's statement that you do need to practise a bit tho', don't just rock up on the day and expect to nail this on your first run, to say that it's tricky is, imho, an understatement! [yesnod]

Best advice I can really give, is - watch the spacedust. Watch where it is coming from. THAT is the direction you are flying, no matter where your ship is pointing. Don't just move the nose of the ship over Bombelli - make it so the spacedust originates from Bombelli. We don't have a flightpath indicator*, so spacedust is the next best thing. If the dust comes from Bombelli, and you constantly check and correct - you're true on target.

But - if you get it right once, you'll have no problem replicating it again and again.

*) FRONTIER!! IT'S THE G 34th CENTURY! Why is there no flightpath indicator? Not even as a toggle? Do you really plan on having atmospheric flight without one of THE most helpful tools in avionics, like, ever? *cough* Sorry. Pet peeve of mine. Gets me ranting every single time.

But - if you get it right once, you'll have no problem replicating it again and again.

I totally second that. Once you know how to bring your ship on target it's actually pretty easy. But: the more accurate on target your initial flight vector is the less you have to correct your bearings. Then you can use your momentum to accelerate more. And more. And more. And even more!

And it's time for another update! This time, we finalized prizes and hope that Frontier will be forthcoming in helping us get them delivered to consoles, if needed.

3rd place: Any single cosmetic item up to price of Pilot Starter Pack

We will also award a judges "most entertaining sports- and showmanship" prize for a participant outside the podium at our discretion. his might be for the most engaging livestream, most persistence at getting a run, most spectacular submission, most entertaining pancake, going the extra mile in helping other bowlers, etc. Basically, for showing the proper SpeedBowl spirit!

We want to award all of there of all platforms, but in case of consoles are depending on Frontier facilitating the distribution. So please, be patient if we might need some time to sort that out.

According to the rules, that would have been valid:
- distance less than 2000 - check
- altitude less than 1000 - check
- not crashed - check

As a Speedbowl 1 veteran, currently out of range on Gnosis, the crew of the 7000 m/s Mach 21 Chieftain vessel, RSV Pearson wishes all Speedbowlers a pancake free event and God Speeeeeeeeeeeeeed.

o7 :D

That's debatable, as it's due to laggy netcode, I would argue that seeing the underside of the terrain mesh at -10m doesn't really scream "not impacted". We accept that the altitude readout sometimes can't keep up and displays negative values, but being visibly beneath the surface for three seconds is a huge ask. ;)

FAQ Update:
Q: What if I go below the terrain, but due to being too fast for the netcode to catch me, I survive flying underground?
A: Altitude has to remain positive at all times. This is clearly a bug in terrain generation / collision detection and would, by common sense, constitute an impact.

Rules clarification as well:
5) Finish line is the towers of Bombelli Prospect, with an altitude between 1 and 1000 m! Distance to Bombelli on the target display has to be 2000 m or less!

Balls! So I'm back to a state of having achieved zero admissable runs then. [hotas]

You mean this is not a good time to casually mention we've been practicing hitting a flying Anaconda at around 2300 m/s from 200 km away? :p

Seriously, judging from the progress you've made in just that few runs, you *are* going to submit a valid one come raceday.

And the amazing CMDR Buur has put out a special news bulletin, seeing as SpeedBowl 2 will happen just next weekend!

Good news everyone!

Frontier has come through and will provide prizes - and they can NOT be bought in the store! Instead, we will have a choice of exclusive community prize packs available.

1st place: Frontier Krait MkII Paint Job, Two Community Prize Packs of your choice

2nd place: Two Community Prize Packs of your choice

3rd place: One Community Prize Pack of your choice

You can have a look at the choices here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/244719-Community-Prize-Packs

In addition to that, our bonus prizes of real world merchandise (Judges discretion for the sports-entertainment award, as well as a Buur Pit special) still stand, of course.

Please note, that due to the exclusivity of the prizes, we are now requesting video footage of all eligible podium runs. We understand that this is a significant change, but will help to work through all technical problems you might encounter.

Thanks, Ascorbius and crew for this one:

Q: Can I use Force Shell Cannons fired by another ship to boost acceleration?
A: Dude. No. Just, no. Creative thinking though!

Excellent question. I know it's possible... I think Azzbo27 is on Xbox and has posted videos before. From way back when I remember that you could save videos and then download them on your PC. Is that still the case?

We're checking with the Xbox guys on the Speedbowl Discord.
