The Star Citizen Thread v9

i would almost call RGO a spiritual successor to Privateer/Freelancer.

I think that's what's they are aiming for.

I suspect they hit the bullseye, but we'll have to wait a bit to see.

Edit: It certainly the explains the shade DD are throwing at GIG.

OK, some interesting bits and pieces to unpick out of the latest Calling All Devs...

1. NPCs on ships - they have schedules for routine flight and combat situations. NPCs in Star Citizen train in the gym and shower while in routine flight.
2. Persistent ship configurations - core systems are in apparently, but not possible yet. Definitely Scouts' Honour planned for the future
3. Adjustable seat height (no, really) - hilariously, because a) the MFDs are physically in the cockpit; b) the IK is linked to the dashboard; and c) the "get into/out of your seat" animations are shared between the single seater ships and are also tied to getting out of your ship, the apparently simple notion of adjusting your seat height is causing all sorts of issues, not the least of which is that all the animations would have to be redone.

On point 3, Kirk Tome mentioned they could possibly "fudge" the IK and the animations issues (so much for "doing it right"), but the MFDs/UI issue is a much much bigger challenge.

It wasn't mentioned specifically, but I think point 3 also sheds some light on the continuing non-appearance of female avatars in the game - given previous statements about the height difference between the male and female avatars, I'd imagine adjustable seats would be a prerequisite.

I cannot say i care about the implementation at this stage.

My issue is mainly hardware. In order for it to be really useful it needs to be 4K unless we want the hardware side of the computer to be bleeding edge to handle maximum setting with sharpening and all that stuff.

And with a 43" 4K screen i have a hard time going back to "low-res" gameplay.:D

Clearly you never tryed vr.
Did you?

Chris will no doubt soon come up with the notion of selling booster cushions to adjust seat height?

Sorry, that's uncalled for! Chris will no doubt soon come up with the notion of selling JPGs of booster cushions?

Chris' vision of super fidelity in the cockpit (related to his super fidelity vision of physically attaching the camera to the skull) means huge amounts of rework just to get your seat height adjusted.

It's a mess whichever way you look at it.

EDIT: Just checked, the camera issue is a side effect of the "unified animation system" - created to share animations between first- and third-person POVs.

CIG, 2015: We're doing a blend of 1st and 3rd person animations!

it seems citizens are preparing to play a MMO with 50 players population and are happy with it.

Server meshing and dividing ship interiors into their own servers should fix it. Then we add the ability to cut up an area of space into multiple virtual servers even more to manage more players.
The only limit will be when a lot of people get in close proximity and we are back into the old alpha state where everyone shared ALL info on the server.

Also, a dogfight with 50 ships would not be a small battle either in close proximity.

Friendly reminder from other "low fidelity" devs - technically NPC is a player, you need to send also NPC coordinates, fired bullets etc to all clients so they are all in sync on all clients ;)

Good luck CIG ;)

Except that if each ship itself is a virtual server that information is not needed to send to any other player except perhaps the player characters in the ship.

The main issue would rather be when two ships barf out 50 passengers within a few hundred meters each and then everyone starts shooting.

Because at some point will all players require all the information to be sent to them.

:D:D:D

Being CiG they ll come to that conclusion somewhere next year at which point they ll come up with a "better" idea ^^

While others debate the game, I will just say the 600i is the closest ship in any space game to the millennium falcon in any game out, bar none.

As to the person who said buying the 600i creates the fun, wrong. If I wasn’t having fun with my starter ship, I would not have thrown away more money on the game.

Yes, who doesnt remember the millenium falcon: that famously sparkingly white, brand new luxurious exploration ship.
