Where would we go if we'd just accept failure right away? Let the servers burn to its maximum extend for the sole reason to get an idea of what is possible and where the server capacity needs to be set.
Since we don't have any detailed information we can only guess that it's the heavy workload of so many players trying to get into the game at the same time. Having said that, a proper log in queue would be appropiate. Why doesn't this exist already? Oh right, FDev .. servers ..
