DBX vs Phantom. Which one will be better?

The phantom is the explorer of choice now. Maybe all those people with grandfathered modules will come back to the bubble to buy one, so we can finally reset them. :p

isn't the real question - which one will be the better silent running ship.

in that krait, you can place a gunner for one extra pip, 25% rebuy reduction, and now 360° target identification in supercruise.
and yes, beeing able to fit 2 C2 short range inertial impact burst laser sounds like a fun idea too

This is what I'm building when the update goes live

70 ly jump range Phantom. With an SRV. With a 534 boost. And yes with just 8t of fuel, call me crazy....but hey I can fill up in 13 seconds!
You are crazy (and I see 12t of fuel there). But I like it. Coriolis still has the DSS weighing 1.3t, so you can add a few more tenths of light years range onto it.

Wait a moment, how have you managed to put 4D sensors in there? And is that meant to be a 5E cargo rack?

The DBX still has the greater range. I'm getting 60+ly out of mine with a guardian booster. I'm getting 50+ out of my (old) Krait with a booster. I don't know about the new Krait, haven't tried it yet. Obviously, the Krait has better module capacity. I have no idea (yet) how the new Krait performs with a booster.

I got 66 ly on a fully engineered Phantom with a very "comfortable" build. Buying and engineering one is the first thing that I intend to do. I own a DBX, AspEx and 78ly Anaconda but I fully expect the Phantom to be my explorer of choice from now on. The interior is blood red for God's sake (my in-game colour :)). And there was I chastising FD for yet another model variation  – it’s a nice ship.

What's changing about gathering mats in the new update??

After scanning a system any HGEs are right there ready to be snapped up – no more flying around aimlessly. In the early beta there were lots in most of the systems that I scanned, but I suspect that we were seeing developer numbers and that a "balance pass" will have been applied in the live build. The only frustrating thing I found is that you'll often discover a HGE with only a few seconds remaining on the clock, making it impossible to get to.

I was too busy in beta with other things to check it out. I'll have to give it a go now that Chapter 4 is live. I won't part with my DBX though... :)

Yes, I never sell a ship (with the exception of the Type 10 [down]), but it's nice to have a change of scenery. I mostly spent the beta engineering the Phantom and taking her out on mid-range exploration trips - worked really well. :)

I'm using the Phantom as an explorer right now. It's nice - fast, long range, and with plenty of optional slots available.

Unfortunately, it's SuperCruise performance is really sluggish.

How sluggish compared to Anaconda? Orca?

It's less sluggish than an Anaconda. It seems to be about the same as an Orca.

Given the choice between an Orca or a Krait Phantom, I'd go for the Phantom: It has the same number of internal slots as the Orca, but the Phantom has a higher jump range, is more manoeuvrable at standard flight speeds, and can also land on a medium pad.
