Taken on its own I'd have rated the OP's troll about five, maybe six, out of ten.... But after thirty-plus pages of debate - including this post of mine - I can't deny in terms of effectiveness it is one of the best I've ever seen......

I think the longevity of this thread has way more to do with the joyous silliness of the forum as a whole. They've taken a witless OP and made it gold by having such fun, busking on various themes.

One of my neighbours calls the union flag the 'Butchers Apron'. Maybe space pirates like the British flag, so best keep it in the game.

I've heard that expression before, and believe (but don't know) that it refers to amount of blood spilled under it. A rather bleak soldiers reflection on war.
