O M G !

ED has been my goto vr game since 2014 and the rift CV1 surround sound improves things even more

But.... And maybe it is just me but I am getting eyestrain in ED VR since 3.3 launch and it has got.me worried. Bear in mind I have done plenty of 8hr marathon vr sessions in ed but now anything over an HR and I feel it. Maybe it's just me. I still love ED in VR I just find it less comfortable now

It's neat, but I don't play Elite in VR, despite having an Oculus Rift since the first devkit + consumer version.
The resolution and low field of view really kills the experience for me.

Yep, ED in VR is VCool

Yes the galaxy map could do with some tweaks, but it is like actually sitting in your very own spaceship.

If I could go back in time, and tell my 16 year old self that eventually, when I dock, I can see how far down the landing pad is by simply looking between my feet (in the asp and others) I probably wouldn't be believed. As well as seeing a marker on the radar and being able to lean forward in my seat to see the actual ship streamer go by.

Mind you, my younger self would probably tell my time traveller self to do one, or ask me why I decided to grow a beard, and question if I was yet a top selling author, and that would lead to some awkward silences.

But I digress. If you're not doing ED in VR, you're doing it wrong.

I here you, brother. Or sister.

Bought an Oculus headset at the end of August. Not left VR in Elite since. Went from 50% Dangerous to 95% without so much as feeling a twinge of a grind. It's like being in a movie.

I've tried it via Riftcat and did enjoy it. Sadly dont have the cash for a proper rift or Vive or I'd probably get one.

However like space voyager maybe when my son is older it would be easier to play in VR.

Edit: also I'm not sure if I can tolerate it as I tried it at an Elitemeet in 2016 and was nearly sick - must of looked pretty bad as the Frontier staff member asked me if I was OK :)

You know those horrible people on the forum who tell you VR is the best, nay the only way to play E :D?

well

They're not wrong.

I knew the Mamba was a medium ship but until I saw it through my shiny new Lenovo explorer I had no idea of it's true size. The first hour of playing in VR I sat head on a swivel with a stupid grin on my face looking more at all the little details in the cockpit than I spend on actually flying. Then when I decided to set down on a planet to drive around in my SRV I finally understood just how big these ships really are.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a virtual spaceship to fly...

I agree, playing ED in VR is awesome. Have been using a OR since the launch of the CV1 and don't want to miss it anymore.

Like others mentioned, the only downside is the relatively low resolution of the displays, but that isn't enough to let me go back to a normal screen.

But you wrote that you are using a "Lenovo Explorer" to play ED in VR. I have to admit, since buying the Rift CV1 I haven't been paying so much attention to the news about new VR headsets, but after reading the OP I just now checked a comparison of VR headsets on Wikipedia and the Explorer apparently has a higher display resolution than the Rift CV1 (1440x1440 vs 1080x1200), so I was wondering how well ED runs on the "Lenovo Explorer" and which graphics card you are using to for VR with this resolution. (I have a GTX 1060 6Gb and ED runs just fine in the Rift, but I imagine the card wouldn't be enough for a higher resolution VR headset.)

Back when the first consumer versions of the Rift and the Vive were released, there were all kinds of problems with ED on the Vive (even though it was a great piece of hardware), because ED seemed to have been optimized just for the Rift, IIRC. Just wondering if that's still the case or if it now runs basically on any VR headset/whether the interfaces are standardized enough to not make such a big difference anymore.

Also, since the initial VR hype had died down (I guess because there are few games out there as fitting for VR as Elite is), the prices for the headsets seem to have gone down quite a bit. The "Lenovo Explorer", for example, is listed for 299€ on Amazon right now.

It would solve the only problem I have with ED in VR, after all...

I have the same card and it runs fine through Steam VR, I don't think E : D supports the lenovo without it. Not sure how much of a difference the higher resolution makes as far as image quality is concerned, it still doesn't beat a good monitor. I do think it's worth the visual downgrade though...

Of course the 1440x1440 don't beat a good or even just standard display (resolution wise), but it would close the gap considerably and might be the improvement over the Rift resolution I am looking for.

If you haven't already google 'EDProfiler' best tool for Elite and VR.

If FDev did anything right, the addition of VR was it.

As an aside, I'm finding the view has been narrowed recently which is isn't happy to my eyes. But I just could not play Elite without VR.

I've got the same HMD, Lenovo Explorer. Playing ED in VR is like playing a whole new game.

Depth perception really adds the immersion and realism.

Welcome to the club! :)

Remember not to overdo it to start with. The way I limited my playtime was with a kitchen timer. When it goes off, stop... assess how your stomach feels and if you can take a bit more time. The best way to develop your VR legs is with a degree of over-caution.

Of course this advice might be a little out of date these days. The games you get have inbuilt anti-sickness measures. The game I first played when I first got my DK2 was Half Life 2

You might find the more washed out lcd colours more of a problem than the increased resolution you would gain. Im not sure I would pay a lot of money for the Lenovo as a replacement, unless its really cheap. Its really good, but the non-oled colours are an issue. And it actually looks like the Lenovo is out of production in many countries now, they were still selling them for full price on UK Lenovo page, but US and Canada they were discontinued recently. I got one in the Black Friday sale from the uk page so I was lucky I think.

Hehe, bit late for that now. I've already spent several hours long sessions staring out into the black through my HMD
