Frontier, what ever happened to...

Ironman Elite
During commander creation the player may set the "ironman" flag. Ironman commanders can never be grouped with normal commanders. Players can use the same name for both normal and ironman commanders.

  • Escape pod systems can be damaged and made inoperable (they are still invincible once launched)
  • Escape pods are disposable: after use, a new pod can be purchased
  • Escape pods must be manually activated
  • Failure to use an escape pod permanently kills the commander if the ship suffers catastrophic hull damage (breaks apart)
    • Permanently killed commanders can be resurrected as a normal commander (no ironman flag), continuing from when they died
    • Ship warning systems and visual/aural cues activate when the ship nears total operational failure
    • The commander is not killed by any amount of ship operational failure
  • Commanders have emergency personal life support which activates in the event of life support failure
    • Personal life support can only sustain a commander for a limited time, but restocks when the commander is in a breathable atmosphere
    • If a commander's personal life support runs out the commander is permanently killed
I've seen this mentioned a fair few times, yet nothing seems to have come from it.
Was there lack of interest in it, or was there a technical reason it hasn't happened?

Because folks used to constantly harp on how great it would be when it gets here.
And it would add another dynamic for those who have done all they want to do in the normal game.

Something is off, have you clicked the source link?
Don't mind the smell if you do...

For the topic, the implementation ended up in the menu somewhere as 'Clean Save' :p

While you can "clean save" all you like, the Ironman Elite was a great idea and loads of folks were hyped for the idea when the game came out.
I'm just curious as to why it never actually manifested in the menu / character creation so far.

I could guess at several reasons, but that would just be speculation and pointless.
Plus we never know, an orange name could drop by this thread and announce it is still planned ;)

Lots of folks were hyped at the ideas of having atmospheric planets, being able to strip and salvage an opponents ship, seeing visible damage on the ship you are attacking (stuff being blown off)... all talked about in the dev blogs.

I could go on.

None of that happened either.

Oh and "offline mode".

I think I've made my point, FDev aren't great at following through.

quote Ironman commanders can never be grouped with normal commanders. At least that would prevent some content producers from entertaining themselves.

That link to a sandro quote is wrong / faked.

Edit: Unless it really did come up on a Lost Winds discussion in 2008 ;)

Edit2: Well, it was wrong ;)

A forced "ironman mode" would probably cause tons of players to think twice about playing in Open. I know I would.

Probably one of those “sounds good on paper, gets the money coming in” ideas, like offline mode.
Still wondering about the robotic crews we never got.

That's odd, this post is the only one with the Rep button replaced with 'Report Post'.

Excellent - it wasn't Lost Winds after all ;)

Still - 2013 dude, 2013. In the wise words of Disney :

If FDev ever decide to implement it I'm sure they'll let us know as it is announced :)

I thought it was understood that stuff Discussed in the DDF was basically spit-balling.

i.e. Here is what we're thinking of doing, what do you think? By the way, there are no guarantees that what we decide on can be implemented in the game. In fact, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, the only thing that was changed as far as the DDF was concerned, was that supercruise / frameshift was created instead jumping from point of interest to point of interest.

BTW, that was the right decision BTW. For all it's faults and sometimes, horrendous, travel times; I much prefer the super-cruise system to the alternative, if you want to see how that would have played out then have a look at Privateer II (Urgh!!)

Offline mode was dealt with at the time of it being dropped.

Frontier are still working on other things, looking through the DDA you can see what has been added so far.
We do get damage on our ships for example - could it be better, sure. But the basic mechanic is there.

To me, the DDA is a check list of things. I'd like to know how far down that list Ironman mode is, hence the thread.

@Mods, cheers for updating my links. My library of links is getting out of hand, hard to keep them all straight.
